From perfumes and aromatherapy to cooking and medicinal purposes, essential oils have been a vital part of everyday life, dating back to 4500 BC. After personally experiencing the many benefits of essential oils, D. Gary Young, Founder and President of Young Living Essential Oils, began a personal campaign to promote the ancient healing art of essential oil therapy. The result? An abundant line of pure, therapeutic- grade essential oils, including over 140 single essential oils and unique essential oil blends, and the world’s largest community dedicated to achieving wellness via nature’s purest, most potent gift.

Essential Oils: Pure, Potent Plant Remedies

Uplifting, protective, calming, and regenerating, essential oils are a unique gift from the natural world. Often referred to as “nature’s living energy” or the very essence of a plant, essential oils are aromatic liquids derived from shrubs, flowers, trees, roots, bushes, and seeds. They not only determine the plant’s aroma, but are vital for plants to grow, live, evolve, and adapt. Essential oils also help defend plants from insects, environmental conditions, and disease. Today, research shows that when used aromatically, applied topically, or taken internally, essential oils can calm, energize, balance, purify, and rejuvenate the mind and body.

It is important to have Young Living’s therapeutic-grade essential oils on hand for your home and family. To help you get started, Young Living has a collection of nine of the most popular essential oils and essential oil blends for a wide range of uses and benefits. Try them in the following favorite everyday applications.

How to use essential oils and get successful results begins with knowing how to use your oils properly, particularly when they are therapeutic-grade essential oils. This is a brief overview of the three basic ways essential oils can be used. You will discover that simply using high quality essential oils for aromatherapy purposes is terrific and that Essential oils for everyday useit is only just the beginning!

1) Aromatherapy

  1. Direct Inhalation: Directly inhale the oil from the bottle.
  2. Diffusing: Use one of Young Living’s essential oil diffuser to disperse oil in a micro-fine vapor into the air, more.
  3. Humidifier: Fill a humidifier with water then place a tissue or cloth, sprinkled with a few drops of oil, in front of the escaping vapor.
  4. Steam: Place a few drops of oil in hot water, cover your head and the container with a towel, and breathe deeply and slowly.
  5. Bath: In a small dish, add 2-4 drops of essential oil to 1 cup Epsom Salt or Sea Salt, pour under running bath water, soak for 20 minutes.

Essential Oil Recommendations for Aromatherapy Purposes

Thieves (anti-bacterial), Citrus Fresh (fresh & uplifting), Purification (purifying), Sensation (romantic), Peace & Calming (relaxing).

2) Topical Applications

  1. Direct Application: Therapeutic-grade essential oils can be applied directly to the crown of the head, to the temples, behind the ears, over vital organs, to the feet, and many other locations. Dilution with a carrier oil, such as V-6, may be required.
  2. Massage: Essential oils can be used before, during, and after therapeutic massage. For a full body massage; add 4 drops of essential oil to 2 TBSP carrier oil (such as V-6).
  3. Perfume: With natural, earthy, and exotic aromas, many essentials oils and blends can also be worn as a perfume.

Essential Oil Recommendations for Topical Applications

This topic is quite large and so I will only list a handful of excellent choices, please follow the links provided for more in depth information on specific uses.

Lavender or Peppermint (headache pain), Thieves (bites/stings), Helichrysum (cuts/wounds), Release (muscle tension), PanAway or Idaho Balsam Fir (muscle/back pain), Joy or Sensation (perfume).

  3. Bread: Add 1–2 drops of oil on a piece of bread, or put 2-4 drops into a dipping dish and add 6-10 TBSP olive oil for a delicious bread dip.
  4. Cooking: Use Young Living’s food-grade essential oils (sparingly please) in place of herbs and spices in your everyday cooking. Learn more about that here.

"There is nothing in a caterpillar that tells you it's going to be a butterfly." ~ R. Buckminster Fuller

Warts are a virus that is easily spread by touching things and/or sharing towels, etc. The virus can enter skin through tiny (or not so tiny) cuts on the skin and kids who bite their nails, don’t wash hands thoroughly often enough are most susceptible. Warts can take 6 mos. to 2 yrs to go away on their own. The viruses that cause warts are passed from person to person by close physical contact or from a surface that a person with a wart touches, like a bathmat or a shower floor. A tiny cut or scratch can make any area of skin more vulnerable to warts. Also, picking at a wart can spread warts to other parts of the body.

I would say these would be in order…

  • Wash hands with Thieves Foaming Hand Soap at home at least 4x a day.
  • Thieves Waterless Hand Sanitizer (send each kid to school with a bottle).
  • Each kid has their own towel.
  • Use Thieves Household Cleaner for cleaning all surfaces around the home (it’s all-purpose so you can use it in place of all other cleaners, it’s cheaper in the long run compared to store bought cleaning products too, especially if you buy the 64oz. size). Thieves Cleaner can also be used in place of laundry detergent (use 1-2 capfuls per load, no laundry detergent or other products. Note: Thieves Cleaner will not make suds because it does not contain Sodium laurel sulfate (SLS) (which is the ingredient that makes ALL of the products we buy sudsy (it’s also toxic), just know that it is cleaning thoroughly.
  • I would also apply a few drops of the essential oil blend Melrose to the location, Melrose is good for warts and healing skin conditions.clove essential oil
  • I would add several drops of Clove, Lemongrass or Australian Blue essential oil to my Thieves Foaming Soap and Waterless Hand Purifier, Lemongrass is known for it’s anti-viral properties.
  • Don’t scrape or pick at the warts while waiting for them to go away as this will only prolong the issue, spread the virus, or complicate the matter.

Also make sure that your child:

  • soaks the wart in warm water and removes dead skin on the surface of the wart with an emery board (that’s never going to be used for nails) before applying any remedy. Be careful not to file into it.
  • keeps the area of the wart covered while the remedy works
  • knows not to rub, scratch, or pick at it to avoid spreading the virus to another part of the body or causing the wart to become infected.

Call your doctor if:

  • you have a young child or infant with a wart anywhere on the body
  • your child (of any age) has a wart on the face, genitals, or rectum

Also call the doctor if a wart or surrounding skin is:

  • painful
  • red
  • bleeding
  • swollen
  • oozing pus

"There is nothing in a caterpillar that tells you it's going to be a butterfly." ~ R. Buckminster Fuller

While going about your daily household tasks you’ve probably stopped to consider the effects of artificial flavoring in foods or the synthetic compounds in your household cleaner. More than likely you’ve wondered if these mystery ingredients are even safe to use in your home.

Therapeutic-grade essential oils can eliminate these concerns when you incorporate them into your daily household routine. Replacing man-made synthetics with natural, plant-based essential oils removes questionable ingredients from your home and adds countless benefits.

It may not be possible or cost effective to avoid all of these chemicals in your cleaning and personal care products, but there are plenty of ways to reduce your family’s exposure to them. Using therapeutic-grade essential oils, to make your own aromatherapy bed linen spray, is a safe, effective alternative to many store-bought scented products.

Some of the best and most popular essential oils for scenting linens:

  • Thieves (essential oil #3423, or Thieves Spray #3266) – spicy clean scent, antibacterial
  • Citrus Fresh (#3318) – fresh citrus scent, antiseptic
  • Peace & Calming (#3393) – soothing and relaxing to emotions
  • Purification (#3399) – clean scent, disinfecting
  • Lavender (#3575) – relaxing floral scent, will help lull you to sleep, antiseptic
  • Sensation (#3420) – relaxing and romantic scent
  • Eucalyptus polybractea (#3537) – fresh sharp scent, supports respiratory system
  • Spruce (#3641) – a fresh pine scent, helpful to respiratory system, antiseptic
  • Lemon (#3578) – fresh uplifting scent, antibacterial
  • Lemongrass (#35810 – slight citrus, very clean scent, antibacterial
  • Grapefruit (#3560) – fresh, sweet, zesty, uplifting scent
  • White Angelica (#3432) – protection and feelings of security, guards against negative energy
  • Transformation (#3646) – helps with replacing negative beliefs, uplifting attitude
  • Surrender (#3424) – helps with casting off limiting inhibitions
  • Peace & Calming (#3393) – encourages deep relaxation, promotes restful sleep
  • Release (#3408) – helps let go of anger, restores harmony and balance

“Every time I change the linens on my bed, I spray Thieves® Spray generously and evenly on the mattress and the pillows. I feel that this leaves the bedding fresh smelling and free of those tiny things we can’t see. Sometimes I will also give the sheets and pillows a quick spray when making the bed. This keeps my sleeping area fresh between changing. I just love the smell of Thieves Spray!” ~ Pam J.

How to Make Your Own Bed Linen Spray

  • 4oz. spray bottle
  • 10-15 drops of your chosen Young Living essential oil (see good ideas above)
  • Water

Fill spray bottle 7/8 full with water, add essential oil, shake, lightly spray bed linens when making the bed.

I enjoy spritzing my bed linens every morning when making the bed. Climbing into bed at night smells so nice and fresh!

"There is nothing in a caterpillar that tells you it's going to be a butterfly." ~ R. Buckminster Fuller

Thieves Household CleanerI have not bought any type of laundry detergent or laundry products for about 8 years now. I use Thieves Household Cleaner in place of laundry detergent. I love it so much that I haven’t used anything else since.

How I use Thieves Household Cleaner for Laundry:

In my front loading washer, I put into the detergent dispenser one capful (Tablespoon) of Thieves Household Cleaner – and that’s it! I put it in the detergent dispenser before I turn on the washer (just like you would if you were using detergent). It’s not necessary to use any detergent or anything else.

I never use bleach or fabric softener – I don’t have to! Read how to make your own all-natural dryer sheets.

Because Thieves cleaner is not a soap it doesn’t make clothes feel stiff or scratchy. My laundry smells really good too!

Thieves essential oil is in this formula and so I’m getting the benefits of the Thieves essential oil blend, such as: anti-bacterial and anti-fungal.

I save a lot of money on laundry products by only needing this one product. Thieves Household Cleaner is available in two sizes: 14.4oz. (#3743) and 64oz. (#4475).

Save even more by becoming a wholesale customer, I recommend getting wholesale prices by purchasing the Start Living with Thieves kit (#3694)… learn more on becoming a wholesale customer and more about the Thieves products in the Start Living with Thieves kit.

Thieves cleaner is an excellent option for those who want to minimize their exposure to cancer-causing household products and want to have a Green lifestyle.

Thieves Household Cleaner is all-purpose and can be used for all of your household cleaning needs (see 16 Ways to Use Thieves Household Cleaner), dilution ratios are on the label.

Item No. 3295

Inner Defense Testimonial:

I came back from convention with all my wonderful new products and oils and walked into an office full of people with an intestinal virus that is running rampant through here. Two people actually came to me clutching their gut and saying that they had to go home NOW because they were so ill (diarrhea & vomiting). Sure enough, about an hour later I started feeling nausea and my gut started cramping and gurgling. That seemed pretty fast after exposure to me, so I’m wondering if someone might have had this virus on the plane, but I digress. I decided to put INNER DEFENSE to the test. I first sprayed a mist of hydrogen peroxide in my ears and then followed it with one of the INNER DEFENSE capsules and a big glass of water.

I promise you, within about 45 minutes my symptoms were GONE. I feel completely fine now, where before lunch I really felt like I might have to go home ill.

This is a POWERFUL capsule. Its faster than an antibiotic and no side effects!

If you haven’t heard yet about INNER DEFENSE, think Thieves, Thyme, Oregano and Citronella in a capsule. I’ve already shared 2 of the caps with one of my “sick chicks” here in the office and I’ll be checking on her in a bit to see if she had the results that I did! Abundant Blessings, Annette

"There is nothing in a caterpillar that tells you it's going to be a butterfly." ~ R. Buckminster Fuller

Before getting into the list of 50 ways to use Thieves® essential oil let’s cover some of the basics you need to know.

The History of Thieves

Young Living’s Thieves essential oil blend was created based on the historical account of four thieves in France who protected themselves from the Black Plague with cloves, rosemary, and other aromatics while robbing victims of the killer disease. When captured, they were offered a lighter sentence in exchange for their secret recipe. Young Living’s proprietary Thieves oil blend includes clove, cinnamon bark, rosemary, lemon, and Eucalyptus radiata and has been specially blended to offer the same kind of defense. Thieves has been university tested and found to be highly effective against airborne bacteria.1

Utilizing the power and protection of Thieves essential oil blend, Young Living created an extensive line of plant-based household products. From toothpaste and mouthwash to cleaning products, hand soaps, and even throat lozenges, the Thieves product line provides safe, effective alternatives for use in the home.

Thieves® essential oil blend is an integral ingredient in Thieves® Household Cleaner, Thieves® Spray, Thieves® Wipes, Thieves® Lozenges, Thieves® Ultra™ toothpaste, and Thieves® Mouthwash.

The Basics:

  • Thieves® essential oil should be always be used with a carrier oil because it contains essential oils that are considered ‘hot’ (spicy) which could irritate skin. The essential oils in this blend that are considered hot are: clove and cinnamon bark.
  • In most applications, mix 3-5 drops of Thieves® essential oil with 1 teaspoon V-6 (carrier oil). If you find that the application still feels a bit too warm to your skin, simply add more carrier oil to dilute.
  • Never use water to dilute an essential oil.
  • A note on V-6: The Young Living massage oil V-6 is also acceptable for topical and internal consumption.
  • Whenever taking an edible Young Living essential oil, such as Thieves®, internally always mix with olive oil or V-6 prior to use as a supplement. As a supplement, dilute one drop in 4 fl. oz. of liquid such as goat’s or rice milk.
  • Possible skin sensitivity. If pregnant or under a doctor’s care, consult your physician. Always dilute before applying to the skin or taking internally. Keep out of reach of children.

Thieves Essential Oil Blend Contains:

Clove† (Syzygium aromaticum), lemon† (Citrus limon), cinnamon† (Cinnamomum verum), Eucalyptus radiata† and rosemary† (Rosmarinus officinalis CT 1,8 cineol).

†Young Living Therapeutic Grade™ essential oil.

50 Ways to Use Thieves Essential Oil

  1. Apply 1-3 drops to cuts or open wounds to prevent infection and promote healing.
  2. Mix with a tablespoon of water, gargle and swallow for a sore throat.
  3. Apply to upper chest and throat with V-6 Massage Oil for bronchitis. Read the rest of this entry »

"There is nothing in a caterpillar that tells you it's going to be a butterfly." ~ R. Buckminster Fuller

Thieves Household Cleaner, womanThieves Household Cleaner is perhaps the most versatile cleaner I’ve used. I’ve found that it’s limitations only extend to the limits of my imagination. I’ve used it with excellent results as carpet shampoo (in place of the normal caret shampoo), cleaning the upholstery in my car, mixed with baking soda and used in my sinks/toilet/shower in place of SoftScrub, as a laundry detergent (I use nothing else!), dish soap, windows, walls, floors, and as a stain remover (do not let it sit long, 1-2 minutes has worked fine for me), concentrated as an oven cleaner, and much more

This all-purpose cleaner can replace every cleaner and detergent currently in your home! Thieves Household Cleaner has been the only cleaner in my home for the past ten years and I have no inclination, need or desire, to buy any other cleaner or detergent. This is good stuff… and did I mention… it’s all-natural! Perfect for those who wish to have a chemical-free home! The dilution ratio’s are on the label of the bottle.

Thieves Household Cleaner in a Spray Bottle

I have a couple of 32 oz. spray bottles that I bought at Lowe’s. I prefer to use the “Hudson Multi-purpose” spray bottle for two reasons: 1. They last me about 4-7 years, and 2. the price is good, the last one I bought cost about $6. Don’t even bother with the cheaper spray bottles, they do not hold up for more than a month.

Two Sizes of Thieves Household Cleaner

Thieves Household Cleaner is available in two sizes: 14.4 oz. (#3743) and 64 oz. (#4475) Buy here.

16 Ways to Use Thieves Household Cleaner

  1. Use for bathrooms and toilets to sanitize and freshen.
  2. Use to cut grease on kitchen counters, stovetops and oven cleaner.
  3. Use to mop floors to clean and disinfect.
  4. Apply to hands to remove stubborn, sticky substances like tree sap.
  5. Use to wash fruits and vegetables from the supermarket.
  6. Add to the water in your vacuum cleaner to cleanse the air.
  7. Use in place of carpet shampoo to shampoo and disinfect the carpet.
  8. Squirt along ant trails in the house to keep them out.
  9. Use in school classrooms to cut down on student sickness.
  10. Scrub old floors to remove old varnish and prepare for refinishing.
  11. Clean upholstery in your living room.
  12. Clean the upholstery and dashboard of your car.
  13. Soak off burnt food in pots and skillets.
  14. Wipe or soak garbage cans to get them clean, sanitary and smelling fresh.
  15. For bad stains, pour it on as a pre-wash stain remover.
  16. Use undiluted to clean and kill mold on walls and floors.
