Lavender Essential OilResearchers in Germany have conducted a controlled study investigating the effects of lavender essential oil on anxiety disorders. Lavender has long been regarded for its soothing and balancing properties.

At the end of the ten-week study, the authors concluded that lavender significantly reduced the Hamilton Anxiety Scale (HAMA) scores of patients who were treated with the essential oil and not a placebo.

Effectiveness of a Lavender Oil Preparation in Treating Anxiety Disorder

Kasper S, Gastpar M, Müller WE, et al. Silexan, an orally administered Lavandula oil preparation, is effective in the treatment of ‘subsyndromal’ anxiety disorder: a randomized, double-blind, placebo controlled trial. Int Clin Psychopharmacol. 2010;25(5):277-287.

Excerpts:

“According to the authors, all clinical trials published to date that evaluated lavender as a treatment for anxiety were performed in highly specific patient populations (e.g., patients with a terminal illness, in intensive care, or who have situation provoked anxiety), and many of the studies were methodologically flawed. Hence, the purpose of this randomized, double-blind, placebo- controlled multicenter study was to evaluate the efficacy and tolerability of an oral preparation of lavender essential oil.”

“At 10 weeks, the lavender group had a significant reduction in HAMA score compared with baseline (P < 0.001), but the placebo group did not. The lavender-treated patients had a total mean score decrease of 16.0 ± 8.3 points (59.3%) for the HAMA. In contrast, the placebo-treated patients had a decrease of 9.5 ± 9.1 points (35.4%) on HAMA. The anxiolytic effect of lavender was clinically detectable after 2 weeks of treatment and was statistically significant at week 4 and all later visits (P < 0.05). Extrapolating the HAMA total score time course beyond 10 weeks suggests that additional improvements might occur if treatment were to be continued beyond 10 weeks. Lavender treatment was superior to placebo regarding the percentage of responders (76.9% vs. 49.1%, P < 0.001) and remitters (60.6% vs. 42.6%, P = 0.009).

Sleep disturbances frequently accompany anxiety disorders. The lavender treatment had a significant beneficial influence on the patients’ duration and quality of sleep and reduced their daytime tiredness. The lavender-treated patients had a total mean score decrease of 5.5 ± 4.4 points (44.7%) on the PSQI, whereas the placebo-treated patients had a decrease of 3.8 ± 4.1 points (30.9%). The sleep improvement was detectable after 2 weeks of treatment and became statistically significant after 6 weeks of treatment (P ≤ 0.01).”

"There is nothing in a caterpillar that tells you it's going to be a butterfly." ~ R. Buckminster Fuller

Recently I had a severe panic attack, thinking someone had broken into our home. Even after I had checked the house, and felt certain no one had broken in, I could not shake the fear, anxiety or panic attack I was still having. I was sweating, my heart was racing, and I was still experiencing that panic fight or flight response, which is actually an Epinephrine rush.
I had already applied Young Living Essential Oils Peace and Calming, as well as Tranquil and Release. My panic attack would not go away. The anxiety was still front and center. I was still completely on edge and as jumpy as a cat on a hot tin roof. I applied Young Living Essential Oil Black Pepper. Within 10 minutes, that edgyness was gone, and slowly but surely, minute by minute, I began to relax. I felt the anxiety, the panic attack finally start to abate. I began to relax, my heart rate returning to normal. I’ve subsequently applied Black pepper to vitaflex points, as well as my wrists and forehead before I’m about to do something that always results in panic, like flying, or driving over very high bridges. It’s working. I’ve come to associate black pepper with a “black hole”. Anything that has the possibility of putting me in that bad, panic anxiety filled place, I apply black pepper with one of the other calming oils Young Living makes, and I’m getting much better results. Black Pepper is the “icing on the cake” if you will. I also believe based on the way Black Pepper worked for me, that it would be a fantastic oil in conjunction with another calming oil for people suffering from Stage Fright, which is a form of panic attack. Try adding Young Living Essential Oil Black Pepper to which ever calming and relaxing oil works best for you to assist in getting out of and releasing those panic attack, anxiety, negative feelings you get from time to time. I firmly feel if I had not added the Black Pepper Oil I never would have been able to go to sleep that night. Remember, link black Pepper to “black hole” in your mind, and hopefully the Black Pepper will be the finishing oil to relieving your anxiety as it has for me. I applied this oil neat to vitaflex points. I don’t ever use a carrier oil, and have never had any skin sensitivity. Depending on your own skin sensitivity, you may want to use a carrier oil, or one of Young Living’s calming Oil as your carrier oil.

Essential oils and woman inhaling them from cupped palmsCreating your own signature emotional wellness aromatherapy kits is a fun way to empower yourself and feel better. The selection of essential oils you need to create an ‘emotional’ kit are as varied as there are emotions. Therefore I have compiled an assortment of essential oils for specific emotional needs that you can easily put together in one order based on your needs. Most of these will be reasonable enough that you could even use them as gifts to those who are motivated to do something to help themselves.

These are some of my most favorite and practical tips using essential oils and supplements to really make a difference. Please note that the essential oils I use and recommend are the best quality available.

The Basics: this applies to all of the created kits

5 Ways to Use the Essential Oils

  1. Inhale – directly from the bottle
  2. Diffuse – in your YL diffuser, 15 minutes 3-4 times daily
  3. Perfume – place a drop on pulse points
  4. Massage – use 3-5 drops of essential oil mixed with 2 TBSP V-6
  5. Bath – 1 cup Sea or Epsom Salt, add 3-5 drops essential oil, stir well, add to running bath water, soak for 20 minutes

"There is nothing in a caterpillar that tells you it's going to be a butterfly." ~ R. Buckminster Fuller

‘It’s not unusual to be loved by anyone?” Why these words popped into my thoughts when I began this article, I don’t know, but love is one way one can have anxiety and Tom Jones’ song, “It’s Not Unusual” does reflect in it’s lyrics how love can cause anxiety.

Better to not have anxiety, but most likely in our lives and any love situation, anxiety does come about.  Be it from, jealousy, dishonesty, health issues, financial, children, or family circumstances.

There are many different ways to help with our anxiety and to feel better, and I am only going to be touching on how Young Living essential oils may help you to feel relief from the anxious feeling you encounter in life.  Great news too, these essential oils not only may help you and others, but also any anxious pets you may have, they are undoubtedly pure and medicinal.  One little bottle will last for an insane amount of years.

Listen up hear, it is extremely important that you come to understand quality is tremendously important when using essential oils. Why? Because if they aren’t quality, than they won’t give you good results and could be harmful. Off topic, but you to need to know. Read the rest of this entry »

"There is nothing in a caterpillar that tells you it's going to be a butterfly." ~ R. Buckminster Fuller

Olfactory chart, pathway how scent affects emotionsFirst, let’s take a look at why therapeutic-grade essential oils would have an effect on emotions. When a fragrance is inhaled, the odor molecules travel up the nose where they are trapped by olfactory membranes that are well protected by the lining inside the nose. Each odor molecule fits like a little puzzle piece into specific receptor cell sites that line a membrane known as the olfactory epithelium. Each one of these hundreds of millions of nerve cells is replaced every 28 days. When stimulated by odor molecules, this lining of nerve cells triggers electrical impulses to the olfactory bulb in the brain. The olfactory bulb then transmits the impulses to the gustatory center (where the sensation of taste is perceived), the amygdala (where emotional memories are stored), and other parts of the limbic system of the brain. Because the limbic system is directly connected to those parts of the brain that control heart rate, blood pressure, breathing, memory, stress levels, and hormone balance, essential oils can have profound physiological and psychological effects.

The sense of smell is the only one of the five senses directly linked to the limbic lobe of the brain, the emotional control center. Anxiety, depression, fear, anger, and joy all emanate from this region. The scent of a special fragrance can evoke memories and emotions before we are even consciously aware of it. When smells are concerned, we react first and think later. All other senses (touch, taste, hearing, and sight) are routed through the thalamus, which acts as the switchboard for the brain, passing stimuli onto the cerebral cortex (the conscious thought center) and other parts of the brain. "There is nothing in a caterpillar that tells you it's going to be a butterfly." ~ R. Buckminster Fuller

When you’re just starting out with essential oils it can be overwhelming. There are over one hundred essential oils which probably leaves you with over a hundred questions. Which ones do I get? How do I use them? Are they safe to put directly on my skin?

I recommend everyone should start off with lavender. It’s a great oil that can be used for so many different things. Lavender was first discovered when a French scientist burnt his arm in a laboratory accident and used lavender to promote tissue regeneration and to speed wound healing. This oil has a calming and relaxing fragrance both physically and emotionally. Keeping lavender in the home will give you many options on how to use it:

Rub a couple drops of lavender on your feet, shoulders, and pillow to help you get a good night’s sleep

Put a drop of lavender on a cut or burn to help with pain, stop bleeding and promote quick healing

Diffuse lavender throughout the day to reduce stress

Put 5 drops of lavender on a damp wash cloth and place in the dryer for a homemade dryer sheet

Rub a drop of lavender on scars daily to help minimize scar tissue

Mix 2-3 drops of lavender in with a handful of Epsom salt and place in a warm bath to help with menstrual cramps

Put a drop of lavender on a insect sting or bite to reduce pain or itching

Place a drop of lavender behind your ears to ease motion sickness

Put a few drops of lavender in a container of distilled water and spray on a sunburn to ease pain

These are just a few of the many uses of lavender. Lavender is a great addition to any first aid kit especially if you’ve got children. Kids are always falling down and skinning knees. Lavender stops the tears and helps calm a worried mind.

So if you’re just starting out with essential oils and don’t really know where to begin I recommend lavender. It’s worth every penny. Lavender is also found in many Young Living essential oil blends and other products such as: Awaken, Dragon Time massage oil, KidScents Tender Tush, Lavender Volume Shampoo, and many others.
