Essential oils are both mysterious and miraculous. They are so complex and contain hundreds – or even thousands of different chemical compounds/constituents, and to date no essential oil has had all of its compounds identified.  They can contain an infinite combination of alcohols, esters, aldehydes, ethers, ketones, acids, phenols, and terpenes.

The chemical composition and aroma of essential oils may provide valuable psychological and physical therapeutic benefits. These benefits are usually achieved through methods including inhalation, internally, or application of essential oils either “neet”, on the skin, or the use of a carrier oil with the essential oil applied to the skin. (Read more on “How to Use”)

Essential oils are aromatic volatile liquids distilled and extracted from many parts of a plant including, but not limited to, the stems, roots, branches, fruits, flowers, seeds, roots, bark, needles, oleo-gum resins and leaves. The key to producing a therapeutic-grade essential oil is to preserve as many of the delicate aromatic compounds within the essential oil as possible.

Essential oils are highly concentrated and far more potent than dried herbs. Essential oils are also different from vegetable oils such as corn oil, peanut oil, and olive oil.  They are not greasy and do not clog the pores like many vegetable oils can.

Essential oils and human blood share several common properties:  They fight infection, contain hormone-like compounds, and initiate regeneration.  Essential oils have a chemical structure that is similar to that found in human cells and tissues.  This makes essential oils compatible with human protein and enables them to be readily identified and accepted by the body. What is Your Passion for New Year 2011 and beyond? Sometimes it can be difficult to figure out exactly what ones passion are, but when you do, moving forward and living with passion can be so very rewarding.

To get started, take the time to be “quiet”, whether this in a private place in your home, out in nature or in a spiritual environment.

Have some paper and pen and begin with writing what is your passion or passions. Everyone has a passion in them, no matter how big or small to others, it is our very own passion.

Now that you have written down what your passion or passions are, begin to note what you can do to begin to bring your passion to fruition.  Not too many things in life happen immediately, the key is taking the first step to move towards whatever ones goal may be.

When I begin this process I apply essential oils and diffuse them, or have Frankincense resin burning. Three of my favorite essential oil blends for this are: Live With Passion, Magnify Your Purpose and Believe. Of course one of my passions is sharing Young Living essential oils and the wonderful healing properties they have. Read the rest of this entry »

A gift for yourself or someone you love. Rather than get bogged down on technique, I want to give you a foundation from which you can blossom and grow.

Things you will need to get started blending scents:

  • Perfume Bottles
  • One small glass jar with lid filled with plain coffee beans (not ground, not flavored!)
  • Notebook and pen

Some choices of essential oils for your ‘notes’

It is not necessary to have every oil on this list, though if you do have these and more you will be able to create many more and different perfumes. Thus, this list is only a sampling to get you thinking in the right direction. Pick and choose how ever many as your heart, head and budget can afford. At the very least, you would want one or two essential oil(s) from each note category.

"There is nothing in a caterpillar that tells you it's going to be a butterfly." ~ R. Buckminster Fuller

Superior and truly pure essential oils are complex volatile aromatic substances distilled from some types plants, trees and roots. The reason why fungus, bacteria and viruses cannot mutate in the presence of therapeutic-grade essential oils is due to their complexity. With that in mind, I’m going to share with you a few of the easy things I know that will help you buy the best essential oils like a pro.

Have you ever noticed that someone wearing perfume, aftershave, or perhaps scented laundry products (detergent, dryer sheets, etc.), soaps, or any other type of scented product always smells the same no matter if it’s 2 inches away from your nose or 20 feet away? There is a reason why. It’s because it’s a chemical fragrance and there’s nothing natural about it at all. Or, because the essential oil complex compounds have been destroyed in some form of processing – heat is always a destroyer of essential oil compounds and the reason why we shouldn’t use heat-type diffusers when diffusing our superior quality essential oils.

Over the years, I have been to many health food stores and when I’m in the mood for entertaining myself I will stop by the aromatherapy section and do some sniffing. While doing this never fails to make me feel like a detective sniffer dog, I at least walk away knowing what’s being sold out there… as you probably know by now, all man-made chemicals are toxic and are a significant contributor to allergies and other sensitivities.

Essential oils are NEVER distilled from: strawberries, blueberries, lilac, melon, papaya, ocean or sea breezes, coconut, chocolate, gardenia, banana, or springtime. These and many others, are always created from chemicals.

"There is nothing in a caterpillar that tells you it's going to be a butterfly." ~ R. Buckminster Fuller

Today, we live in a society of emotional turmoil. There is more focus on emotional behavior and psychological conditions of the body now than at any time in our history. Many doctors are recognizing the possibility that a number of diseases are caused by emotional problems that link back to infancy and perhaps even to the womb.

These emotional problems may have compromised our immune system or genetic structuring, causing children to become allergic to something that the mother ingested while pregnant.

Essential oils play an important role in assisting people to move beyond these emotional barriers. The aldehydes and esters of certain essential oils are very calming and sedating to the central nervous system (including both the sympathetic and para¬sympathetic systems).

These substances allow us to relax instead of letting anxiety build up in our body. Anxiety creates an acidic condition that activates the transcript enzyme which then transcribes that anxiety on the RNA template and stores it in the DNA. That emotion then becomes a predominant factor in our lives from that moment on.

When we encounter an emotionally charged situation, instead of being overwhelmed by it, we can diffuse essential oils, put them in our bath, or wear them as cologne.

The aromatic molecules will absorb into the bloodstream from the nasal cavity to the limbic system. They will activate the amygdala (the memory center for fear and trauma) and sedate and relax the sympathetic/para¬sympathetic system. Read the rest of this entry »

Essential oil on a Lavender plant, close-up.For the past 440 million years plants have been evolving, existing and changing for the benefit of survival of their species. The aromatic plants in particular have been providing themselves and humanity with the basic materials and compounds required for daily life, protection, wellness and healing. It’s no freak of nature that humans used plants for food and medicine, plants were humankind’s first medicine.

The image to the left is the surface of a Lavender plant magnified many times. The purple colored ball-shape parts are the essential oil. Microscopic in size and extremely delicate, it’s easier to comprehend ‘how’ these tiny aromatic gems can easily be ruined through mishandling by humans.

Have you’ve ever been in a home or shop where fresh herbs have been hung to dry and have marvelled at the scent upon walking into the space? If yes, know that what you’re smelling is the essential oil that has left the plant surface and is going into the air. That also means that all of the essential oil that you are smelling in the air, is no longer on the plant surface or in the plant. It is estimated that a dried herb looses 90-95 percent of its essential oil when dried. This explains why so much herb needs to be used or taken over many weeks or months to provide a healing benefit to humans. Read the rest of this entry »

"There is nothing in a caterpillar that tells you it's going to be a butterfly." ~ R. Buckminster Fuller

Many can identify with stress and tension locating itself somewhere in the body, mine has always gone straight to my neck and shoulders. Causing pain, discomfort, stiff neck, difficultly turning my neck, and when I wake up feeling stiff and uncomfortable it produces an emotional feeling of, “ugh, here we go again. I’d just love to have this nonsense go away for good.”

Two weeks ago, I went back to the drawing board, my essential oils case and Essential Oils Desk Reference (EODR). The blend called Release™ has always been quite good for me, though it never addressed the problem completely, two weeks ago I decided that it was time to find an essential oil that more adequately nipped this in the bud.

After about an hour, I made my decision. I chose the blend Humility™ and two singles, Sandalwood and Jasmine. I’ve had these three oils massaged on my neck, shoulders and back three times in the past two weeks and I have to tell you the results have been amazing! But before I tell you my results I want to share how I came to this conclusion so that it may help you make choices that produce great results to.

How I went about choosing Humility™, Sandalwood and Jasmine Read the rest of this entry »
