Smell / Olfactory

You are currently browsing the archive for the Smell / Olfactory category.

Air fresheners are a huge business. We all want our homes, cars and workplaces to smell fresh and clean, vibrant or relaxing.  So, when we’re shopping and smell a fragrance like vanilla, or one that reminds us of our childhood home or garden, instinctively we reach for it and put it in our cart, because the smell made us happy, or maybe relaxed.  Not once do we stop to read the list of ingredients in that scented candle or spray air freshener. After all, if it says “vanilla” or “lavender”, we expect we are in fact smelling real vanilla or lavender.

Sadly, nothing could be farther from the truth.

If you are not using pure essential oils, like Young Living Therapeutic Grade Essential Oils   to freshen up your room, by default you are using a synthetic air freshener, and, unbeknownst to you, you are inadvertently putting your health at risk from one of these very concentrated sources of poisons in your home.  This is because some of the chemicals needed to make the products effective are harmful. The problems are compounded when the products are mixed.  Far from freshening the air in your home, they just interfere with your ability to detect smells or simply cover them up, all the while adding considerable toxic chemical indoor pollution. http://www.mcs-america.org/airfresh.pdf.  In 2002, EPA researchers testing air freshening units that plug into electrical sockets determined that when the fragrance chemicals in these products react with common indoor air pollutants they produce serious health hazards. These chemicals include toxic substances such as benzene derivatives, pinene and  limonene, aldehydes, phenol, and cresol.

Young Living Thieves Household Cleaner is an excellent, fantastic product.  In our family, we use it all the time, just about every day.  I’m so glad they created it, as I truely don’t know what my family would do without it.

That said, there are times we have run out of the Thieves cleaner without warning.  This happened a few months ago.  I sat there and said to myself, “Well now what am I supposed to do”.  No way did I want to run to the store and buy any toxic chemical cleaning product.  So, I cracked open all 3 of my Essential Oil Desk references and went to work.  I came up with a blend that smells fantastic, and cleans even better.  The best part of discovering this was…. I’ll NEVER EVER be without an organic all natural essential oil cleaner now. no matter what.  And, every single time I use it to clean something, the next person who walks in my house ALWAYS says “what is that wonderful smell?”.  Some of the oils used have positive uplifting emotional properties as well, so, I wonder if it actually makes me happier while I clean!

My cleaner is an Uplifting Household Multi Surface Cleaner, is a totally Non toxic, chemical free all natural, organic, therapeutic grade essential oil multi surface green cleaner.  I’m calling it “Uplift”.

We all have to clean surfaces in our homes every day, multiple times per day.  I personally can not stand the smell of most of the cleaners currently on the market, and I certainly can not stand reading their list of ingredients.  Can you read and understand their list of ingredients?  I can’t.  Why not look some of them up and see for yourself exactly what chemicals are in the cleaning products you are using every day on your countertops, kitchen table, baby’s toys and food tray, etc.

We are surrounded by cancer causing chemicals everywhere, in the air we breath, the water we drink, the food we eat, and mostly in the products we use in our homes to clean.  To the best of my knowledge, there is no cleaning product on the market that is safe to use around food.  What does that tell you?  It tells me a lot!  If I can’t use it around food, then what’s the real deal if my hand is soaking wet with it from cleaning?  After all, our skin is the largest organ we have, and 66% of what we put on our skin is absorbed into our bodies, so just how much of these toxic chemicals are we absorbing both through the skin on our hands, and through inhalation when we spray it?  I don’t know how much, but I do know the correct answer is TOO MUCH!!

Using only 10 pure, organic, Therapeutic Grade Essential Oils, I have put together a totally non toxic green all natural household cleaner.  This cleaner has anti bacterial, anti-fungal, anti-parasitic, deodorizing, highly antimicrobial, mold reducing and disinfectant properties, and this cleaner is safe to use around food and children.  It Cleanses and disinfects the air and neutralizes mildew, cigarette smoke, and any other  disagreeable odors as you clean

It is safe to, quite literally soak your hands in it.  It has an uplifting refreshing fragrance as well, and is safe to use around food.

I especially go crazy using it during cold and flu season, I spray a rag and wipe down the phone, TV clicker, etc.

I personally feel it cleans better then anything else I’ve ever used, and it cleans quickly and easily.  Literally, spray and wipe.  No scrubbing required.  I clean everything from the kitchen counter, to the bathtub, with 1 swipe.  I LOVE it.

It “tackles the tough jobs” without me having to resort to buying a toxic, chemical laden scrubbing bubbles type product, or whatever other chemical.  I’m so happy!!

Additionally, a number of the oils used in this cleaning blend have positive emotional properties, like: helping to overcome mental fatigue and improves mental clarity and focus, it may be beneficial in helping to overcome fatigue and exhaustion after illness, uplifting, antidepressant,  calming, relaxing, and balancing, both physically and emotionally.  So, in a nut shell, you may actually feel better about cleaning while cleaning!  How fun is that!!!

Why not give this non toxic, chemical free all natural, organic, therapeutic grade essential oil multi surface green cleaner a try.  If it doesn’t become your absolute favorite cleaner, which would surprise me, what have you lost?

Remember to shake well and often, as the 10 different pure essential oils will separate from each other.  If you have a very, very tough cleaning project, my suggestion would be to spray the area with the cleaner, wait 10 minutes to allow the essential oils to fully penetrate the stain, and then wipe clean.

Available at headandhoof.com in 16 ounce and 24 ounce size spray bottle.

When it comes time to studying for exams, no matter the age, sometimes focus, comprehension and clarity can be difficult. Simply inhaling any of these essential oils provides the brain with alertness and the ability to concentrate better.

Want good test scores: use the same essential oil during test-taking that you used during studying to facilitate recall!

The fragrance of a therapeutic-grade essential oil can directly affect everything from your emotional state to your lifespan. When a fragrance is inhaled, the odor molecules travel up the nose where they are trapped by olfactory membranes that are well protected by the lining inside the nose. Each odor molecule fits like a little puzzle piece into specific receptor cell sites that line a membrane known as the olfactory epithelium. Each one of these hundreds of millions of nerve cells is replaced every 28 days. When stimulated by odor molecules, this lining of nerve cells triggers electrical impulses to the olfactory bulb in the brain. The olfactory bulb then transmits the impulses to the gustatory center (where the sensation of taste is perceived), the amygdala (where emotional memories are stored), and other parts of the limbic system of the brain. Because the limbic system is directly connected to those parts of the brain that control heart rate, blood pressure, breathing, memory, stress levels, and hormone balance, essential oils can have profound physiological and psychological effects.

5 good Young Living therapeutic-grade essential oils for focus, retention, recall and comprehension are:

Aromatherapy Travel Fan DiffuserThe timing couldn’t be more perfect for the July monthly special. You can save 10% on the Travel Fan Diffuser and get a free 5ml bottle of Purification essential oil blend included!

I did the math… normally the retail prices on these are as follows…

- Travel Fan Diffuser $46.05 (plus tax/shipping)
- Purification essential oil (5ml bottle) approx. $10 (I say approximately because Young Living doesn’t normally sell Purification in the 5ml size, it’s always 15ml)

You save about $15 off the retail costs, not bad at all!

5 Cool Facts I Like About the Travel Fan Diffuser

  1. First, it is perfect for travel; it’s lightweight, easy to use in the car and in those smelly hotel rooms (peeee-U!)
  2. It’s battery operated.
  3. It’s safe to use; it does not use heat to disperse the essential oil but rather a quite fan (heat ruins the therapeutic benefits of your oils).
  4. It can diffuse any of the YL oils without getting clogged.
  5. Plus, diffusing essential oils is a perfect way to help you relieve tension, dispel odors, and create an atmosphere of peace and harmony.

How To Use the Travel Fan Diffuser

Put 15–20 drops of your favorite essential oil or use the free bottle of Purification that comes with it (more drops may be needed for rooms larger than 600 square feet). There is about 80 drops in a 5ml bottle. Slide the essential oil pad holder, grid facing downward, back into the diffuser. Press down once on the on/off button to turn on and start diffusing. A green indicator light will turn on when the unit is functioning. To turn off, press on/off button again.

If you would like more details refer to the aromatherapy Travel Fan Diffuser fact sheet.

You can even put a couple drops of Purification on a cut or insect bite. Here are some other favorite ways we use Purification…

  • Dilute several drops of Purification essential oil blend in a spray bottle and spray to repel insects.
  • Apply one drop of Purification essential oil blend topically to soothe existing bug bites or scratches.
  • Add Purification essential oil blend to your washing machine to freshen laundry.
  • Add a couple drops of Purification essential oil blend to shoes to help neutralize odors.

The value these oils provide in our household is nothing short of amazing… you can start to get the idea of how valued these oils are by taking a look at how we use them in place of other commonly used products.

White Angelica Essential OilAromatherapy, using therapeutic-grade essential oils, is a wonderful way to uplift and balance emotions. These are the most popular essential oil blends specifically formulated to promote emotional clearance and self-renewal.

How Aromatherapy Works

The fragrance of a therapeutic-grade essential oil can directly affect everything from your emotional state to your lifespan. When any scent or fragrance is inhaled, the odor molecules travel up the nose where they are trapped by olfactory membranes. When stimulated by odor molecules, this lining of nerve cells triggers electrical impulses to the olfactory bulb in the brain. The limbic system is directly connected to the parts of the brain that control heart rate, blood pressure, breathing, memory, stress levels, and hormone balance, therapeutic-grade essential oils can have profound physiological and psychological effects. The sense of smell is the only one of the five senses directly linked to the limbic lobe of the brain, our emotional control center.

Scent stimulates nerves to fire in the emotional center of the brain, but it also stimulates the master gland to release hormones. Hormones affect the fight/flight response, as well as digestion and heart rate. In this way, essential oils can affect us in many ways all at once, just through their fragrance. More about the olfactory system and how scent can shift emotional states.

Olfactory chart, pathway how scent affects emotionsFirst, let’s take a look at why therapeutic-grade essential oils would have an effect on emotions.

The sense of smell is the only one of the five senses directly linked to the limbic lobe of the brain, the emotional control center. Anxiety, depression, fear, anger, and joy all emanate from this region. The scent of a special fragrance can evoke memories and emotions before we are even consciously aware of it. When smells are concerned, we react first and think later. All other senses (touch, taste, hearing, and sight) are routed through the thalamus, which acts as the switchboard for the brain, passing stimuli onto the cerebral cortex (the conscious thought center) and other parts of the brain. Essential oils are both mysterious and miraculous. They are so complex and contain hundreds – or even thousands of different chemical compounds/constituents, and to date no essential oil has had all of its compounds identified.  They can contain an infinite combination of alcohols, esters, aldehydes, ethers, ketones, acids, phenols, and terpenes.

The chemical composition and aroma of essential oils may provide valuable psychological and physical therapeutic benefits. These benefits are usually achieved through methods including inhalation, internally, or application of essential oils either “neet”, on the skin, or the use of a carrier oil with the essential oil applied to the skin. (Read more on “How to Use”)

Essential oils are aromatic volatile liquids distilled and extracted from many parts of a plant including, but not limited to, the stems, roots, branches, fruits, flowers, seeds, roots, bark, needles, oleo-gum resins and leaves. The key to producing a therapeutic-grade essential oil is to preserve as many of the delicate aromatic compounds within the essential oil as possible.

Essential oils are highly concentrated and far more potent than dried herbs. Essential oils are also different from vegetable oils such as corn oil, peanut oil, and olive oil.  They are not greasy and do not clog the pores like many vegetable oils can.

Essential oils and human blood share several common properties:  They fight infection, contain hormone-like compounds, and initiate regeneration.  Essential oils have a chemical structure that is similar to that found in human cells and tissues.  This makes essential oils compatible with human protein and enables them to be readily identified and accepted by the body.
