Treatment of a deep puncture wound with laceration and infection was not something I had experienced as yet with our horse, which he soon remedied.  Our horse injured himself with a deep puncture wound and laceration on a Sunday, most likely from a nail in his paddock fencing.

When I talked to the barn owner on Monday, he told me it was deep enough that I should consider calling in a vet for an open debridement and stitches.  I went Tuesday morning. When I saw him, the swelling around the wound on his neck was slightly larger then the size of a tennis ball, deep, clearly sensitive to the touch, and it was clear he was unhappy at best.  I flushed the wound copiously with peroxide.  I’m a big believer in Essential Oils.  I made a blend of Pure Therapeutic grade Essential oils, mixed them with 15 drops of water, and slowly irrigated them into the wound with a needle-less syringe, paying particular attention to the puncture “hole” in the wound.  The wound at that time was clearly infected. I could see pus deep within the wound.  I believed wholeheartedly that the Young Living Essential Oils would work, however, everyone was telling me he needed antibiotics and open debridement with stitches.

I went and repeated this essential oil irrigation on Wednesday.  The wound was only slightly less swollen.  The horse was in pain.  I did call the vet, who came on Thursday. Read the rest of this entry »

Bunny rabbit with Sore HocksAntibiotics failed to cure or reduce infection, sore hocks, wound abscess and necrotic tissue in our rabbit.  Here is my story on how we successfully overcame that using essential oils.

Where to turn when antibiotics fail to cure infection

We have two rescue bunnies with severe splayed legs (all 4 on each).  They will chronically develop sore hocks, wound abscesses and necrotic areas for the rest of their lives.  Not only were the vet bills astronomical, the antibiotic Baytril was no longer effective.  Rabbits are extremely sensitive to almost all medication available, with only a couple antibiotics able to be used safely on a bunny.

Our most recent issue was that the sore hock became necrotic and pulled into the bone.  It was so hard you could “knock” on it, was hot around the perimeter, red and was about 8” in diameter.  Midnight looked very sick, and I wasn’t sure we were going to be able to save her.  The vet put Midnight on 15 days of Baytril antibiotic, after I said “no” to him when he suggested euthanizing her. Even on the antibiotics Midnight’s wound continued to get worse.  She lost all hair in that area and the surrounding area.

Young Living Therapeutic Grade Essential Oils provided the key to successful treatment for us!

We gave her a bath with Johnsons Baby shampoo of the entire area, followed by an area specific bath with Thieves foaming hand soap.  Once she was dry, we applied Thieves spray to the necrotic area, held her on her back for 10 minutes, then sprayed LavaDerm on, held her for 10 more minutes to facilitate absorption.  Before putting her back on bedding, we applied Bag Balm as a waterproof barrier.  We did this twice the first day. Systemic Lupus, arthritis, fatigue, pain constant chronic have been a daily part of my life for the last 20 years. I have wonderful doctors who have managed my disease as well as everything that comes with it, I am so grateful that I am blessed to have these wonderful doctors treating me. The one thing that no one has successfully managed is my pain. Although I used pain patches with oral pain killers, sadly the most they ever did was “take the edge off”. I was introduced to Young Living Essential Oils, They have had a positive profound impact in my life. I rarely use pain patches at all, have gone from eight plus heavy painkillers a day to 1 or 2, some days none!

I use a blend of Young Living Essential Oil anti-inflammatory oils (clove, oregano, Nutmeg, lemon, rosemary, basil, chamomile, lavander, peppermint with a few others) on my affected muscles, joints as well as my spine. Typically within 3-5 minutes at most I start to feel relief, shortly there after I am pain free. In 60 days my Sedimentation Rate has dropped 30 points and I no longer take ANY oral anti-inflammatory medicine!

Additionally, I was previously on a chemotherapy drug called Methotrexate to manage my disease. I am now off of Methotrexate for the last 30 days, I do not plan on restarting it. And, let’s be honest, when you’re in pain, chronically, it affects your mood and appearance to others. I can honestly say I am now in a better, if not good, jovial, happy uplifted mood almost every day. It just feels amazingly wonderful to be pain free the majority of the time for the first time in 20 years. Read the rest of this entry »

Non toxic pest control!! Isn’t that a much better way to get rid of pesty critters?  Are you looking for ways that are Eco-friendly, natural, green and organic to help in the removal of pesty bugs without toxic chemicals?  In this article you will learn different ways to do just that.

Among the many chemicals in our industrial environment that get into our systems and make us sick are the pesticides we use in our homes and in our gardens. We use them because they are toxic to the creatures that bug us, but they are also toxic to us. Sometimes the toxicity is immediately apparent: we get a headache, get sick or feel nauseous from the fumes or other contact.

Sometimes the toxicity is subtle and can accumulate resulting in chronic complaints and disorders that can be serious and even deadly over time (including allergies, cancer and miscarriages). Sometimes we even put poisons on our pets to deal with ticks and fleas, not understanding or realizing that these substances are not health for our animals or us.

We don’t need poisons to kill pests. We can repel them (and even sometimes kill them) with substances that are not only harmless to us but are actually healthful to us. What could this be? Therapeutic-grade essential oils.

One way to do this is to get a pistol-grip squirt bottle. Mix a few drops of the essential oil with some water, shake it up, and start firing.  You can do this with most pests.

Our pets stress can become quite aggravated at the drop of a hat, literally.  If you have skittish critters, it does not take much for them to be stressed and get scared, and their poor little hearts can start pumping like crazy. Some are more skittish than others.  Wouldn’t you like to be able to help them out, so that they are calmer?

There are many different therapeutic-grade essential oils that are calming and are safe to use with pets.  It is important to be sure to know that your  essential oils are quality oils, and not perfume grade.  When you use essential oils for your self and your pets, you want to be sure that you know that the essential oil you are using is a quality essential oil. This is extremely important, especially when you use them for therapeutic purposes on your pets that you love so much.

Three oils that are particularly great calming oils are:

  1. Lavender is a great aid for relaxing.
  2. Peace and Calming blend helps calm tensions, promoting relaxation and a deep sense of peace.
  3. RutaVala blend promotes relaxation of the body and mind. It helps ease tension and relieve stress.

It’s quite simple to use therapeutic-grade essential oils on our pets.  You know that first off, the great importance of having top quality essential oils.   Top quality, therapeutic-grade ssential oils are very concentrated and powerful, so it is important to understand that less is better!

The easiest way to use essential oils with your pets is by diffusing them.  By diffusing the essential oil your pets, and you, are getting the aromatherapy by breathing in the essential oil that is being diffused.  The diffuser literally puts the essential oil into the air in micro-fine particles that stay suspended in the air for several hours.

Start by diffusing your therapeutic-grade essential oils for 15-30 minutes, one to four times a day for normal situations. Place the nebulizer diffuser higher in the room (a shelf, bar, or fireplace mantle are good choices) so that the essential oil mist has a longer distance to fall through the air.

Read more on diffusing

Essential oils can also be applied topically.  Remember less is better.  The amount of essential oil that is used would be determined by the size of your pet.

  • Small to medium sized pets, like cats or small/medium dogs:
  1. Take 1 drop of any of the above mentioned essential oils.
  2. Place it in the palm of your hand and rub your hands together until the essential oil is dry.
  3. Rub your pets paws and give them a nice loving petting.
  • Larger sized dogs
  1. Take 2 drop of any of the above mentioned essential oils.
  2. Place it in the palm of your hand and rub your hands together until the essential oil is dry.
  3. Rub your pets paws and give them a nice loving petting.

With either one of these therapies, diffusing or topical application you should see your pets becoming calmer.  They may begin to love it when you bring out the essential oils.  I know my pets love them and they have their favorites, just like I do.

We love our pets, and they love us, so why not help them to feel less stress by having therapeutic-grade essential oils on hand for them.  You can get your pet care products delivered right to your door.  If you are interested in learning more, please contact me.

Many of us use synthetic chemicals to deal with insects, which are not safe for us, our families, or pets to be exposed to. Young Living has many single essential oils such as lavender, lemon, peppermint, melaleuca, lemongrass, cypress, Eucalyptus globulus, cinnamon, thyme, basil, wintergreen, and the Purification and Thieves blends, which effectively repel many types of insects including dust mites, lice, ticks, spiders, and fleas.

For instance, Young Living’s Peppermint essential oil placed on entryways prevents ants from entering. Simply smear a couple drops along the threshold. Peppermint is also excellent for repelling ants and rodents (squirrels and mice). peppermint-1

If you need moth repellents for your linens and woolens, you can avoid toxic commercial mothballs made of naphthalene – instead use Young Living’s essential oils. Natural essential oils like lavender, lemongrass, Western Red Cedar, or Rosemary can just as effectively repel moths and other insects, without the harmful chemical exposure.

You can make a sachet by placing several drops of your chosen essential oil on a cotton ball. Wrap and tie the cotton ball in a small handkerchief or square of cotton. Hang this sachet in storage areas or in your chest of linens. The sachet can be refreshed as often as necessary. You can put this sachet in your dresser drawers to keep your clothes freshly scented.

Making a spray bottle for your Young Living oils is a terrific way to freshen air and repel unwanted insects. Here are some household cleaning blend recipes, but you can make your own combinations for insects by simply using some of the above essential oils.

If spiders are an issue in your home, I have always found that diffusing, in my Young Living nebulizer diffuser, the Young Living blends Thieves or Purification to be quite effective. If I haven’t had my diffuer on in a while or when I move into a new house that spiders start appearing and then die after I start diffusing. I find that diffusing for 15-30 minutes a day keeps the spiders away.

Palo Santo is terrific at killing embedded ticks. I put one drop of Palo Santo essential oil directly on the tick and it kills them. I also use my Young Living Lavender Shampoo once a month when I give my dog a bath, and I add to it 4-5 drops of Palo Santo – it smells terrific and helps kill any fleas and repels fleas and ticks too.

Article by Evelyn Vincent, Young Living Distributor – helping families live “Greener” lives.

Using essential oils with pets is excerpted from the Essential Oils Desk Reference

Young Living Essential Oils have been used very successfully on many different kinds of animals from kittens to 2,000- pound draft horses. Animals generally respond to essential oils in much the same way as humans. [It is NOT recommended to use other brands of essential oils on animals are they can be adulterated and contain harmful chemicals - if they contain any real essential oil at all].

How Much Young Living Essential Oil Should I Use?

Most animals are even more sensitive to the effects of therapeutic-grade essential oils than humans. They often seem to have a natural affinity to the healing influence of the oils. Adjust dosage proportionately, based on body weight. If the protocol for a human being ( at about 160 lbs.) calls for 3-5 drops, then a horse (at 1600 lbs. or more) could use as much as 10 times that amount, while a dog (at 16 lbs.) would need as little as one tenth that amount. Generally speaking, if you have never put oils on an animal before, you should start carefully, applying them only to the feet, paws, or hooves (on the frog and cornet bands) at first.

In the case of cats and small dogs, essential oils should ALWAYS be diluted before applying, because they are actually MORE sensitive to the biochemicals in the oils than humans.

Be careful to avoid high phenol oils, such as oregano and thyme, on cats because they can be extremely sensitive to these stronger oils. They should only be used in high rates of dilution (90% carrier oil) and the diluted oil should only be applied to the paws.

General Guidelines When Using Essential Oils with Animals:

  • For small animals: (cats and small dogs) Apply 3-5 drops DILUTED (80 essential oil – 90% carrier oil) oil mixture per application.
  • For larger animals: (large dogs) Apply 3-5 drops NEAT (dilute if using oils high in phenol) per application.
  • For large animals: (cattle and horses) Apply 20-30 drops NEAT (dilute if using oils high in phenol) per application.

Essential Oils and Cats

There is much fear among some people that essential oils should never be used around cats. It is true that cats process essential oils very differently than humans, dogs, and horses. I personally do not have a cat and cannot share with you any of my own experiences other than this… when I have come in contact with cats while wearing my Young Living oils (as a perfume or applied for healing) cats are are attracted to me so strongly that I can’t keep them away.

I have also heard stories, I don’t know how accurate and true they are, that some have had bad experiences with oils and cats. This has most certainly occurred for  one of two reasons, 1) because they are using inferior quality oils, or 2) they’ve used way too much essential oil.

I do know that it is fine to use Young Living oils in the same house with cats because many thousands of Young Living oil users have cats and they use their oils daily without any problems. I also know that there are many vets and animal workers who use Young Living oils with cats very effectively for healing and wellness purposes.

I believe that those who say never to use essential oils even in the same house with cats are either repeating something they heard or read that’s not true, or those horror stories are from those who used an inferior essential oil or too much (too much of even a good thing can be unhealthy, read Why Essential Oils Kill Insects and Not Humans).

Essential Oils and Cat Testimonials

“I have two kittens that a friend gave us. When we got them they were very sickly and terribly thin. I use oils on them daily. I put Helichrysum, Lavender and Roman Chamomile on their ears twice a day. I’ve also used Peppermint, RC, Idaho Balsam Fir and maybe a few others. These kittens are growing like weeds, play hard and sleep hard. Except for still having extra mucus, they are the picture of health. The YL oils didn’t kill them, but they would be dead if not for the oils.” ~ Edith C.

“I volunteer at an animal shelter and they used Melrose in oil base for ringworm there. Some cleared up in days, some in weeks. One tougher case over a month. That is compared to over 1 year with what they were doing before, which was why I suggested the oils. I couldn’t stand to see them isolated from kitten hood to adult. Of course, I would only use my YL oils. One shelter worker seemed to think they even liked the smell and affected their mood.” ~ Toni D.

“If the YLEO (Young Living Essential Oils) kills cats then my cats have lost eight or nine lives each! They love the oils and a couple of them try to lick the oils off of my skin if don’t watch them. I have 5 cats. I even had one cat with liver problems (her brother died from liver disease and she had all of the same symptoms – that was before YL) that Immupower cured. That is one of the oils that isn’t supposed to be used for cats. I do dilute the oils when I use them on the cats – 3-4 drops per teaspoon of olive oil. I don’t know why I do since they lick the oils off fo me and those aren’t diluted. I have also diffused the oils full strength. Of course cats aren’t suppose to like citric oils and smells but I have 2 cats that will pick up lemon rind and chew on them – what can I say.” ~ Carol B.

Essential Oils and Dogs

My dog, has been around Young Living essential oils since the age of 3 1/2, when we got him, he’s now 9 1/2 years old. He absolutely LOVES the oils, we let him pick which one he wants applied. Some of his favorites are: Palo Santo (for pain and killing ticks), Deep Relief RollOn (for pain), Geranium (for bites and irritated skin), Helichrysum (for skin issues), Frankincense (for skin conditions and removing a large skin tag). The one essential oil he doesn’t like is Tea Tree (Melaleuca alternifolia) and if one oil is not particularly good for dogs Tea Tree is it. We’ve taught him how to ask us when he wants some oils and how to indicate if he wants a particular oil over another.

Please use the information above to help you use your Young Living oils safely and effectively with your pets and remember… ALWAYS use common sense.

"There is nothing in a caterpillar that tells you it's going to be a butterfly." ~ R. Buckminster Fuller

I have a friend who asked for my help with her German Shepherd, Pixie.  Pixie has hip Dysplasia and she was having a hard time getting around and in a lot of pain.  I gave several suggestions to my friend and she was all for buying products and giving the therapies a try.

The first therapy I started was Raindrop Technique. I have been around Pixie for many years, so she is used to me, but not so used to essential oils.  I start the therapy by applying Peace & Calming and Valor to myself.  As I approached Pixie, she reacts to the scent. I kneel down beside her and remain still for several minutes, until she becomes accustomed to the smell. As she breathes in the fragrances she becomes calm. (Some of the oils in the Raindrop Technique kit are what I used on Pixie)animals-boy-dog

I have my friend get Pixie to lie down and I begin the Raindrop Technique applying oils, starting with Valor, then, PanAway, wintergreen and spruce. Pixie is a large German Shepherd and I use 1-2 drops of each oil.  She has had four treatments and we have seen a noticeable change in how she gets around.

I also got her started on;

It is so rewarding to see the results that Young Livings Therapeutic Grade Essential Oils and products can do for not only us, but our beloved pets as well.  And the realization that we can help them with the best pure and natural products, which betters their life, gives one such a “happy” feeling.  Just seeing how these therapies have helped Pixie to be relieved of the discomfort from hip Dysplasia is absolutely wonderful.*  I wish I would have known about these precious oils when my German Shepherd was alive. But I am grateful that I now have them in my life and am able to share them with others.
