Aren’t you sick and tired of taking oral antibiotics and/or giving them to your dog or horse for infected wounds, which don’t work to cure the infection the majority of the time, because antibiotics have been so over prescribed and over used in our country.   But we sure do still get the side effects, from severe upset stomach to yeast infections, to allergic reactions, hives, and de-sensitization.  Sadly, those side effects aren’t even the half of it.

Our skin breaths and absorbs all the things we put on it, as well as things in the air, into our bloodstream.  Yes, this includes toxic chemicals, in everything from soap, perfume and lotion to antibiotic ointments and salves containing petroleum

Remember, the skin absorbs 60%+ of all chemicals we use on our skin and hair.

The bottom line: DO NOT PUT ANYTHING ON YOUR SKIN THAT YOU COULD NOT SAFELY EAT!

Mineral Oil and Vasaline Petroleum Jelly are used in topical antibiotic ointments in order for the company to create a soft creamy salve to dispense their antibiotic formula in.  Although these ointments may feel creamy and soft to the touch, the non antibiotic emolliants are actually toxic chemicals

Mineral oil is liquid petroleum which is a by-product in the distillation of petroleum to produce gasoline. Propylene glycol is typically a derivative of petroleum.  Mineral oils listed as petrolatum (petroleum jelly) or C-18 derivatives are frequently used in personal care products such as lipsticks, lubricants, baby lotions, salves and oils.   They commonly contain contaminants that studies have linked to cancer.   UCLA studies links “high levels of exposure to mineral oils to increased mortality and incidence of lung cancer, … and melanoma” Source: PubMed.com

Petroleum Jelly, or Petrolatum, is a semisolid compound derived from hydrocarbon. Mineral oil (a form of kerosene), also referred to as paraffin oil or liquid paraffin, white petrolatum, and paraffin wax are the most commonly used ingredients in skin care products today, used as the base cream for creating an oil and water emulsion.

One risk factor of Pancreatic Cancer is exposure to chemicals such as gasoline, petroleum products, and DDT (Alguacil J et al 2003; Hoppin JA et al 2000; Simon B et al 2001).

Mineral oils are also known to clog pores, forming a barrier, thereby preventing skin from eliminating toxins   Mineral oil blocks  the skin’s ability to moisturize itself, leading to chapped and dry skin, which is usually the condition it is sold to alleviate.  While Petrolatum on its own is not too harmful, it is often cheaply produced and the impurities/contaminants often found in Petrolatum are the concern. Frequently, Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons(PAH) are found, which have been linked in studies to breast cancer.

A study done in Europe cites: “Petrolatum – Impurities in Petroleum Jelly or commonly known as Vaseline under suspicion as a carcinogen in Breast Cancer – Petrolatum Banned in products in the EU – Long term damage to health becoming evident – side effects from impurities in the manufacturing process implicated in causing cancer! “.  Petroleum and Cancer: Petroleum has been noted as a possible cancer risk.

In Europe, Petrolatum has been banned from use in cosmetics unless the source can be proven and the product shown to be pure. It is listed as a possible human carcinogen.  What a shame the USA hasn’t done the same thing.  It’s time we caught up to our European friends and started boycotting these toxic chemically laden personal care products.

As is often the case, there has been conflicting information about the carcinogenicity and potential toxicity of Petroleum Jelly and mineral oil in the last few years. The results of each companies testing, from Independant Labs to the private labs of the companies selling these same products,  can be argued forever, and any study can be criticized, but the facts remain the same….. these commonly used daily moisturizers, lip balms and antibiotic ointments with petroleum based ingredients, did produce cancerous tumors in mice.

As per Dr. Mehmet Oz: “What could be more harmless than a little shine on your rosy lips?   Well, as it turns out, lots of things, because the shine in lip gloss comes from petroleum jelly. Petroleum jelly is a byproduct of oil drilling, and when you spread it on your lips, you end up eating it, which is essentially the same as drinking gasoline. Add up the amount of lip gloss the average woman uses (and consumes) over a decade, and it equals seven pounds. The European Union has banned many petroleum jelly products, and experts are concerned they could be linked to cancer. Women with breast cancer have twice the levels of hydrocarbons (substances found in petroleum jelly) in their breasts than women who haven’t had breast cancer.”

As per the (Environmental Working Group) EWG:  “According to its statistics 80 per cent of cosmetic and personal care products sold in the country contain one or more of around 24 known impurities that have been linked to cancer.” “…..to avoid 1,4-dioxane, read ingredient labels and avoid any of the 56 cosmetic ingredients that include the clauses ‘PEG,’ ‘xynol,’ ‘ceteareth’, and ‘oleth’.”

None of us would ever knowingly poison or contaminate our own body, or those of our children.  Manufacturers have made it increasingly difficult for us to understand and know what ingredients are in the products we use on our body every day.  No parent would knowingly put a gasoline byproduct on their childs lips or even worse, an open wound.  Yet, we have unwittingly been duped into doing just that for years.

It’s time we take charge of this part of our lives, by educating ourselves, our families and friends about what these ingredients are, to read labels carefully, and to put an item back if we can’t read the list of ingredients.  Say NO to ingredients that are 30 letters long and can not be pronounced except by an experienced chemist.  There is an alternative solution for a green and clean antibiotic cream.

My solution to this problem has been to use Young Living Essential Oil bath and personal care body products.  They are pure, organic, and unadulterated.  Young Living products are exactly what they say they are.  They are safe to use on any age person and your family dog.  You can read the ingredients, and there are no toxic ingredients used in the process of or in the final product.  Finally, a totally toxic chemical free line of therapeutic grade essential oil personal care products that you can feel good about using on your baby and yourself  that actually work!

As a nurse, what upsets me the most about this is the antibiotic ointments, because they are placed on an open wound with direct access to your blood supply.  I was so upset, that I created my own antibiotic blend of therapeutic grade  essential oils.  I have used it with amazing results now for well over a year, on everything from large severely infected  knee abrasions from a fall on a dirty sandy road, to a very deep puncture wound with a 1 foot long laceration from a rusty nail in our horses neck.  I was told regarding the horse that he would need an open debriedment with stitches, and a minimum of 2 weeks of oral antibiotics.  I chose not to do that, and instead squirted my antibiotic essential oil blend into his neck wound 3 times, (once a day for 3 days) at which point he was clearly feeling better and there was no visible infection or inflammation.  The vet and barn owner thought it was a miracle.

In a sense it was a miracle.  the time tested invinsability of the effectiveness of Young Living Essential Oils is nothing short of a miracle.  No matter what I use them for, they have never failed me….EVER.  If you’ve never used Young Living Essential Oils before, it’s time you gave them a try.  They are nothing like any essential oil you may have used from a health food store, in fact that’s like comparing apples to zebras!

If you feel like I do about putting a known toxic chemical on a wound, please contact me.  I would be happy to assist you in understanding what you too can do to get an effective  topical antibiotic treatment without petroleum jelly in it by using Young Living Oils.

I have created an amazing antibiotic blend, available for retail purchase.  Until that website is up & running, you can place an order by contacting me directly at tammybaile@comcast.net.

This is a 2 oz. bottle for $45.99 plus shipping.  Please remember Pure Therapeutic Grade Essential Oils are used by the drop, not by the bottle, so this will last you for quite some time.

Our world has slowly but sadly become a toxic waste dump.  An even sadder fact is that we are often unknowingly polluting our own body with toxic chemicals in common products we use on a daily basis.  Most companies only care about the bottom line…their profit…at the expence of their customers health.  They use the cheapest ingrediants they can to make the item sellable to the public, which more often then not includes toxic chemicals known to cause cancer, as defined by the FDA.  These toxic cancer causing chemicals are in everything from deoderant and toothpaste to fly and mosquito repellant.

Mosquito spray has toxic DEET, fly spray contains toxic organophosphates and Pyrethrins, and something as innocent as antibiotic ointments have toxic petroluem jelly.  Cancer causing toxins are all around us, and we unsuspectingly use them daily, even when we think we’re using a healthier form of the product, even if we buy them in a health food store.

Our skin is the largest organ and system of the body (whether animal or human). Our skin breaths and absorbs all the things we put on it, as well as pollutants in the air.  Sadly this includes toxic chemicals, everything from soap, perfume and lotion to insect repellents.  Our skin absorbs up to 63% of every product we apply to it, and that includes toxic chemicals.  We are currently in fly and mosquito season.  I now refuse to purchase or allow the use of any insect repellant on the market, as they all contain cancer causing chemicals.  To make matters worse, none of these toxic fly or mosquito products have ever worked for us… EVER!

Aren’t you sick and tired of spraying yourself with insect repellents filled with poisonous toxic chemicals known to cause cancer, neurological problems and seizures? Ones that you have to go to the hospital if you accidentally ingest?   Ones that the DEP needs to be notified of if a drop gets into any water supply?   Ones that can not be applied to small children or your beloved pet?   If you wouldn’t consider directly applying cancer causing agents to your body, then why would you use the other toxic chemical repellents on the market, almost all of which contain DEET and/or Pyrethines and organophosphates?

Even the “natural” fly sprays on the market are not necessarily safe.  Most if not all of the natural insect sprays are toxic.  The word “natural” is very deceiving whether it is on a bar of soap, perfume, or a fly repellent.   Companies are basically allowed to label a product “natural” if it contains any naturally occurring compound (even if it’s been altered synthetically)!   Unfortunately, many popular companies use solvents to extract their oils (like hexane), and traces of those solvents can remain in the product.

Regarding the few companies adding essential oils to their products… typically they are using a completely inferior grade of oil, a fragrance or perfume grade essential oils, not a pure therapeutic grade essential oil.   These are typically adulterated, often containing 90-95% chemical solvents so that their cost is a fraction of what it takes to distill compared to pure therapeutic grade oil distillation.    A huge percentage of the approximate 4,000 chemicals approved by the FDA to “fragrance” products are known carcinogens and many may be labeled an “essential oil.”   If you’ve purchased essential oils from a health food store, go read the label.  Can you ingest it?  If not, there’s a good reason why… it’s not pure!

Young Living is one of if not the only company offering pure, organic, therapeutic grade essential oils.  Young Living Oils are so pure they can be safely ingested.  With over 400 oils to chose from,  there are many combinations for both you and your pet to safely use as an antibiotic, as well as for flea, tick, mosquito and fly control, with no toxic side effects, and certainly no cancer causing agents!

If you’ve never used Young Living Essential Oils, then you really need to do yourself and your loved ones a favor and find out about them.  They are so pure and highly concentrated that just a few drops goes a long way.  These oils are used to treat everything from Abcesses to Zest for life.

I am currently creating a few non toxic therapeutic grade essential oil products for you, your young children, dog and horse.  Look for my all natural fly repellant coming soon.

These are some of my favorite and easy use tips for summertime using vinegar and therapeutic-grade essential oils from Young Living. Over the years I have found vinegar terrific for somethings and essential oils superior for others. So this list comprises what I have found to be the best-of-the-best in my household.

  1. Storing Winter Clothing – keep moths out of your stored clothing by putting several drops of both Lavender and Cedarwood essential oils on a cotton ball where the clothing is stored.
  2. Mice Nesting Indoors – use lots of Peppermint essential oil! Put drops directly on unfinished wooden surfaces, or put drops on a cotton ball and place cotton ball in desired locations. This WILL keep rodents away and chase them away if they’re already inside. You will have to refresh every so often for it to keep working.
  3. Weed Killer – kill weeds with vinegar – PLEASE – note that the dilution ratio and how often it is used can create positive or negative results. Here’s an article I wrote on Weeds and Vinegar based on two Ag studies and on using vinegar in the garden effectively.
  4. Aromatherapy to Sleep Better – I have been scenting my bed linens every morning when I make my bed for over 12 years now. It is so easy to do and I find it helps me feel and sleep so much better. Here’s an article I wrote, Aromatherapy Bed Linen Spray to learn more.
  5. Vinegar for Fleas and Ticks – I have heard you can add a teaspoon of white distilled vinegar for each quart bowl of drinking water to help keep your pet free of fleas and ticks. The ratio of one teaspoon to one quart is for a forty-pound animal. I tried this with our dog but used Apple Cider vinegar and my dog hated the taste and pretty much stopped drinking his water, so that one didn’t work for us. I have also read that vinegar can be used as a spray on dogs to repel insects, however… doing this too often can be harsh on your dog’s skin, therefore I am not likely to try this method. This I also tried using Apple Cider vinegar and it works well for fleas but did nothing for ticks. I do not spray the vinegar water down onto my dogs skin as was suggested to do. I simply sprayed it a bit down into his coat. Interestingly, he enjoys licking the vinegar spray off his coat which means he’s ingesting it – go figure! Still it’s done nothing to kill or repel ticks. We’ve had fantastic results using Palo Santo essential oil on ticks. Read about our experiment and resultsusing Palo Santo and ticks.
  6. Cure a cement pond before adding fish and plants by adding one gallon of white distilled vinegar to every 200 gallons of water. Let sit three days. Empty and rinse thoroughly.
  7. Keep Cats Out of the Garden – Vinegar will help keep cats away from areas you don’t want them. Sprinkle vinegar on any areas where you don’t want the cat walking, sleeping, or scratching. Pour it around the perimeter of your children’s sandbox and repeat every two months and this will discourage cats from using it as their sandbox.

  4. Sleep Better – I have been scenting my bed linens every morning with an essential oil spray I make myself (it’s easy to do) when I make my bed for over 12 years now. It is so easy to do and I find it helps me feel and sleep so much better. Here’s an article I wrote, Aromatherapy Bed Linen Spray. Some of my favorite essential oil blends to incorporate into my bed linen spray are: Sensation, Thieves, Sacred Mountain, Humility, Gentle Baby, or Dream Catcher.
  5. Vinegar for Fleas and Ticks on Dogs – Add a teaspoon of white distilled vinegar for each quart bowl of drinking water helps keep your pet free of fleas and ticks. The ratio of one teaspoon to one quart is for a forty-pound animal. My dog is 80lbs. so I added 2 teaspoons and he hated the taste. Maybe you will have better success. I have also read that vinegar can be used as a spray on dogs to repel insects… I made a 4oz. spray (water with and 1/2 teaspoon apple cider vinegar) and sprayed this on my dog who was scratching frantically because he got fleas… my results have been very good (I do not spray all the way down to his skin in most places though), his itching has stopped and he has been licking the vinegar/water spray mixture off of his coat, so maybe that’s how I can get him to ingest the vinegar mixture.  Note: spraying your dog’s skin too often with the water-vinegar spray can be harsh on your dog’s skin. See my article on Essential Oils and Ticks: removing and killing ticks effectively.
  6. Cure a cement pond before adding fish and plants by adding one gallon of white distilled vinegar to every 200 gallons of water. Let sit three days. Empty and rinse thoroughly.
  7. Keeping Cats Out of the Garden and Sand Box – Vinegar will help keep cats away from areas you don’t want them. Sprinkle vinegar on any areas where you don’t want the cat walking, sleeping, or scratching. Pour it around the perimeter of your children’s sandbox and repeat every two months and this will discourage cats from using it as their sandbox. Caution: Using Vinegar on grass or plants will kill them and can change the pH of your soil, so be mindful where you pour vinegar outside!

"There is nothing in a caterpillar that tells you it's going to be a butterfly." ~ R. Buckminster Fuller

Bandit, our dogTick season is here!!! YUCK!!! This past week I’ve found two on me. And Sunday night I wished that I had grabbed my video camera so you could see what I do when I find a tick on myself, Curt or Bandit (our dog). I didn’t grab my video camera because… I was chicken… I wanted to get the thing off of me ASAP!!! This tick was embedded on my thigh, just above my knee.

Fortunately, my Essential Rewards order arrived last week and in it was a bottle of Palo Santo (#3607) essential oil – in my book, you MUST have this extremely valuable oil handy during this time of year!

Three years ago Curt and I began experimenting on ticks to see which were most effective at getting them to let go and at killing them, here’s what we discovered…

The Jars for Our Tick Test

We had 3 different little jars, each jar contained 3 drops of only the 3 different Young Living essential oils individually.

  • Jar #1 – had 3 drops of Peppermint
  • Jar #2 – had 3 drops of Purification
  • Jar #3 – had 3 drops of Palo Santo

Each time we returned home from walking Bandit we would examine him, and ourselves, for ticks before they became embedded. Every time we found a tick we would scrape it into one of the 3 jars and watch what would happen. These ticks were not embedded.

For the embedded ticks we would apply 2-3 drops of any of the 3 essential oils mentioned above and watch to see if the tick would die or dislodge itself from the skin.

If you are a pet owner, you undoubtedly are very fond of your pets and want to take care of them as best as you can. For our selves we most likely try to eat healthy and stay away from harmful products as much as possible, along with hopefully choosing smarter and healthier ways to treat illness or injuries. Of course we want the same for our loved pets.

Have you ever wondered why pets eat grass? Perhaps you understand this is their way of settling their stomachs. Animals enjoy plants and these plants have all the nutrients of essential oils, but in very small quantities. So if you think about this, you may come to the assumption that essential oils would be as good for our pets, as they are for us. You are absolutely correct. As long as you are using quality essential oils and understand how to administer them to your pets. Why? Because quality essential oils are very powerful and a little bit goes a LONG way.

You may also be aware of foot reflexology and how the bottoms of our feet are connected to our body.  Well our pet’s feet work somewhat the same way.

There is a wonderful brochure: Oils & Pets, by Dr. Mary Hess, which can be purchased through CrownDiamondTools.com. You will be able to see the foot chart for animals and what oils are recommended for various ailments.

Peppermint has a strong, clean, fresh, minty aroma. One of the oldest and most highly regarded herbs for soothing digestion, it may also restore digestive efficiency.* Jean Valnet MD studied peppermint’s supportive effect on the liver and respiratory systems. Other scientists have also researched peppermint’s role in improving taste and smell when inhaled. Dr. William N. Dember of the University of Cincinnati studied peppermint’s ability to improve concentration and mental sharpness. Alan Hirsch MD studied peppermint’s ability to directly affect the brain’s satiety center, which triggers a sensation of fullness after meals. This powerful essential oil is often diluted before topical application. Peppermint may also be used to enhance the flavor of food and water.

Peppermint essential oil is an energizing oil with a penetrating, minty aroma that helps to relieve both mental and physical fatigue. Use it in the daytime, as its energizing effect may keep you awake at night.

Our horse had a huge abscess in his foot, which blew out a chunk of hoof; leaving a section missing, a huge crack, and deep infected internal pocket.  He was completely lame, unable to go clockwise at all in any gait. I treated this by first flushing it with peroxide and it literally smoked!  His ankle and hoof were hot to the touch and the ankle was swollen and hot.

I went back the next day with my essential oils.  I scrubbed the frog with Thieves Hand Soap, rinsed, irrigated with peroxide which still smoked, then injected my Clove, Oregano and Thieves mixture into the crack then wrapped it with gauze to hold in any oil that leaked out.

When I went back the next day, the ankle was perfect; he was no longer favoring his injured foot. It was no longer hot, or even remotely warm.  Again I injected peroxide… no smoke.  I injected my essential oil combo and let it be.

What an awesome, no antibiotic, fast, healthy, alternative treatment to an infection!  My lame horse of 36 hours previous was now cantering away, and happy to do it!

The farrier was out 3 days later… his frog was completely healed with no signs of any internal abscess, not foot tender at all.  The barn owner calls it “the voodoo that I do”! Read the rest of this entry »
