Oregano

You are currently browsing the archive for the Oregano category.

Therapeutic Oregano essential oil is quite well known for its beneficial properties that many have heard about before. You may even have used this wonderful essential oil or heard friends speak about using it. Quite often essential oil users turn to Oregano oil during the fall and winter months for its cold and flu fighting benefits. There are over dozens of studies at PubMed on the value of this highly beneficial oil. To ensure that you’re getting what you pay for it’s imperative to buy superior quality, therapeutic grade, such as Young Living.

The versatility of oregano oil is perhaps one of the reasons it is a favorite among essential oil users. For instance, I can use my YL oregano oil in cooking to flavor my food and also it can help kill bacteria in the food that may make me ill, such as E. coli. Salmonealla and Listeria monocytogenes (as is seen in this study). Do keep in mind though that these essential oils are extremely potent and in most dishes in cooking one or possibly two drops of oregano oil are quite sufficient (tips on how to use essential oils in cooking).

Oregano oil is rich in carvacrol. Carvacrol is responsible for the biological activities of oregano. Many diverse activities of carvacrol such as antimicrobial, antitumor, antimutagenic, antigenotoxic, analgesic, antispasmodic, antiinflammatory, angiogenic, antiparasitic, to name just a few; have shown activities and uses such as feed additive, in honeybee breeding and in gastrointestinal ailments (study).

While the food, personal care product, and pharmaceutical industries will use the ‘isolated’ carvacrol found in oregano oil it is advantageous to know that in nature each plant contains many natural compounds that work synergistically and as such many people, myself included, far prefer the benefits of keeping herbal remedies in tact. For instance, an isolated ingredient can have very negative effects on the body. But when it is left whole with all of the other compounds naturally occurring in a plant it can oftentimes be perfectly safe and beneficial.

Oregano Oil Key Constituents

Carvacrol (60-75%)
Gamma-Terpinene (3.5-8.5%)
Para-Cymene (5.5-9%)
Beta Caryophyllene (2-5%)
Myrcene (1-3%)
Thymol (0-5%)
Kurt Schnaubelt, Ph.D. wrote in his book, Advanced Aromatherapy, that oregano scored 92% against stapholococcus, 83% against streptococcus, 96% against pneumococcus, 78% against candida. Clearly, a pure therapeutic-grade essential oil of oregano is an incredible substance for keeping those pesky microbes at bay.
Using Oregano Oil Safely

As with any pure high quality essential oil it is imperative that you use great care for best results. With oregano oil; it is not for use with children or pregnant women without a doctors consent.

When applying oregano oil topically it is advised that it too be used mindfully as it is considered a ‘hot’ essential oil. Which means that it is spicy and the heat can irritate skin of an adult. So always use a carrier oil, such as V-6, when applied topically. The dilution ratio would be 2 drops oregano oil to 1-2 teaspoons of carrier oil.

High in phenols, oregano may irritate the nasal membranes or skin if inhaled directly from diffuser or bottle, and not applied neat (without a carrier oil).

Oregano Oil is Found in These Products:

  • ImmuPower (essential oil blend)

fruit-cooking-foodFermenting vegetables (like sauerkraut)  used to be common practice, and necessary too as this provided people a way of preserving foods before refrigerators came to be. Interestingly enough, fermented foods had more healthful benefit than just simply being part of a meal. Fermented foods that have not been heated can contain billions of probiotics as well as life enhancing enzymes. Probiotics are good/or “friendly” bacteria that kill off bad bacteria. Many studies have found that so many problems start with a bad bacteria overgrowth in the intestines, such as candida, which in time can spread throughout the body. New studies are even linking a specific bad bacteria in the colon with obesity. Naturopaths teach that a person is only as healthy as their digestive system is, and health authorities like Dr. Christopher and Bernard Jensen taught that 90% of disease begins in the colon. It is very important to keep a clean colon, but it is also important to provide the colon with good bacteria to help protect the body.

Young Livings Life 5 is an excellent probiotic that can help implant good bacteria into the colon, however it is a good practice to eat foods high in probiotics as well. Unsweetened yogurt is okay, but it isn’t likely to implant enough friendly bacteria into your colon. Kiefer, found near yogurt in grocery stores is better then yogurt (make sure it is unsweetened). Foods such as fermented vegetables are another excellent and delicious way to supply your body with probiotics. The key is that it must be raw, cooked/heated sauerkraut and vegetables have no probiotics in them because the heat kills the good bacterias. This means that making your own is ideal; especially considering it is easy, and far less expensive too! Read the rest of this entry »

raindrop-technique-kit

Raindrop Technique® combines the art of aromatherapy with the techniques of Vita Flex and massage in the application of essential oils to various areas of the body. Raindrop Technique provides a revolutionary means of bringing balance and harmony to the body – physically, mentally, and emotionally. Mind, body and soul.

Raindrop Therapy is a powerful, non-invasive tool for assisting the body in correcting defects in the curvature of the spine by utilizing infection fighting therapeutic-grade essential oils that are antibacterial, anti-viral, anti-fungal, and antimicrobial.  During the years that it has been practiced, it has resolved numerous cases of scoliosis, kyphosis, (kyphosis-an abnormal, convex curvature of the spine, with a resultant bulge at the upper back) and chronic back pain.  Further, it has eliminated the need for back surgery for hundreds of people.  By integrating Vita Flex and massage, the power of essential oils brings the body into structural and electrical alignment.*

Vita Flex Technique means “vitality through the reflexes”. It is a specialized form of hand and foot massage that is exceptionally effective in delivering the benefits of essential oils throughout the body.  It is said to have originated in Tibet thousands of years ago.

Energy is released through electrical impulses created by contact between the fingertips and reflex points. This electrical charge follows the nerve pathways to a break or clog in the electrical circuit usually caused by toxins, damaged tissues, or loss of oxygen. Vita Flex uses a rolling and releasing motion. Rapid results are experienced when combining essential oils with Vita Flex stimulation.*

The ability of essential oils to penetrate the skin quickly and pass into bodily tissues to produce therapeutic effects has been studied. Essential oils are some of the most powerful inhibitors of microbes known and are an important weapon in combating many types of tissue infections.

Raindrop Technique is based on the idea, now being explored in a number of scientific studies, that many types of scoliosis and spinal misalignment’s are caused by viruses or bacteria that lie dormant along the spine.  These pathogens create inflammation, which, in turn, contorts and disfigures the spinal column.

Research in 2001 further corroborated the existence of infectious microorganisms as a cause of spine pain and inflammation.  Alistair Stirling and his colleges at the Royal Orthopedic Hospital in Birmingham, England, found that 53 percent of patients with severe sciatica tested positive for chronic, low-grade infection by gram-negative acteria (particularly Propionibacterium acnes) which triggered inflammation near the spine.  Stirling suggested that the reason these bacteria had not been identified earlier was because of the extended time required to incubate this material. (1)

The technique of Raindrop goes way beyond aromatherapy.  The use of therapeutic grade essential oils is very important, as using inferior or lesser quality oils would not give the same results and could actually be unsafe.  I use only Young Living Therapeutic Grade (YLTG) essential oils in the Raindrop Technique.

Note: All essential oils are NOT created equal. Most essential oils are of lower quality. Therefore, do NOT use the information provided here for other brands. Learn why quality is so important.

The ability of essential oils to penetrate the skin quickly and pass into bodily tissues to produce therapeutic effects has also been studied.  Hoshi University researchers in Japan found that cyclic monterpenes (including menthol, which is found in peppermint) are so effective in penetrating the skin that they can actually enhance the absorption of water-soluble drugs. (2)  North Dakota State University researchers have similarly found that cyclic monterpenes such as limonene and other terpenoids such as menthone and eugenol easily pass through the dermis, magnifying the penetration of pharmaceutical drugs such as tamoxifen.(3)

It is interesting to note that many essential oils used in Raindrop Technique, in addition to being highly anti-microbial, are also among those classified as GRAS (Generally Regarded As Safe) for internal use by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration.  These include basil, marjoram, peppermint, oregano, and thyme.  These and many other GRAS essential oils have a decades-long history of being consumed as foods or flavoring with virtually no adverse reactions.

In summary: Raindrop Technique is one of the safest, noninvasive techniques available for spinal health.  It is also an invaluable tool to promote healing from within using topically applied essential oils. It may help with spinal misalignment’s, tissue cleansing, emotional release and with relaxation.

The Raindrop Technique includes these Young Living Therapeutic Grade essential oils;

  1. Valor-Balances energies to instill courage, confidence, and self-esteem.  It helps the body self-correct its balance and alignment.*

Here is a “recipe” for Raindrop in a Bottle:

Fill a 5ml bottle with the following Young Living therapeutic grade essential oils & keep on hand for quick application.  The recipe fills the bottle half way.

  1. Valor                 25 drops
  2. Oregano           10 drops
  3. Thyme                5   drops
  4. Basil                     5   drops
  5. Cypress              5   drops
  6. Wintergreen     5   drops
  7. Marjoram         5   drops
  8. Peppermint      5   drops
  9. Aroma Siez       5   drops

If you do not have anyone to apply the oils to your spine, put the oils on the bottoms of the feet on the spinal reflexes. This is good in assisting the immune system.*

If one has respiratory challenges, apply on the bottom of the feet on the spinal reflexes and the balls of the feet and on the chest.  Keep in mind that you may need to apply V6 to the chest, as the skin may be sensitive to the oils.*

Often throughout our lives we have to deal with pain, be it from a head ache, arthritis, muscle pain, bones, inflammation, infections or more serious health issues.  Some may have chronic continual pain, others may be occasional.  If one is interested in trying essential oils to possible help with aches and pains it is always VERY important to know that you are using the best therapeutic grade essential oils.  Young Livings essential oils are the best available, as far as I am concerned, and MANY others would agree with me.

If you or someone you know would like to experience the possibility of some relief using Young Living Therapeutic Grade (YLTG) essential oils, or to learn more about the differences in quality and purity of essential oils, please continue reading this article and also please contact me should you have any questions.

The following is a way to do a test on yourself or whomever may be suffering with pain.

  1. First have the individual sit comfortable in a chair, with their feet flat on the floor.  Have a towel under their feet.
  2. Ask them to measure what their pain level is, from 1-10, with 10 being the worst.
  3. Have a tablet handy to write down what their pain level is.
  4. You will apply the oils to the bottoms of the feet. Once applied, wait 3 – 5 minutes after each application.  Then ask what their pain level is again, and write the answer down, next to the oil you have just applied.

Here are the oils to use.  Please apply them in the order as follows;

  1. Wintergreen -  for bone
  2. Cypress -  for circulation
  3. Marjoram-  for muscle
  4. Lemongrass -  for ligaments (or Helichrysum)
  5. Peppermint – for inflammation
  6. Oregano – for virus

The results may be pretty interesting to hear, see and feel.  I have done this test on many people and it is amazing to see how the oils relate to each individuals pain issues.  And when they begin to use the oils for therapy, the results are two-fold, feeling better physically and mentally. Try it out and see what you come up with.  And after the test, this may help you to determine what oil your body may be telling you to use…Happy oiling!!

Essential oils are potent. If you use just the bottle to drip them out you can only get 1 drop, but when it comes to cooking oftentimes you will find that 1 drop is too much. But how do you get less than one?

There are no kitchen tools that will accurately measure 1/4, 1/2, 2/3, etc of a drop so it really will come down to an art.

One of the ways to get less than a drop is to use a toothpick. However this will be very inaccurate because it will depend on how porous the toothpick is and how long you leave it in the recipe you are making. It can also be wasteful as the toothpick will retain some of the oil when you throw it away. Well, you can always pick your teeth with it.

A more accurate way to get closer to an exact amount is to tip the bottle slowly until the drop begins to form. When the drop is about the size you need or want, take a clean spoon and touch it to the “partial” drop. The spoon will then have what you need and you can stir it into your recipe.

Happy cooking and Bon Apetit!
