As with anything, it is a lot cheaper and easier to prevent toxic mold than it is to do mold remediation and costly home repairs. Being proactive against toxic mold = a lot more money in your bank account!
3 Tips and What I do to ‘Prevent’ Toxic Mold n My House
1. If the roof, door or window begins to leak – repair it as soon as possible!
It is cheaper to repair a small problem than it is to repair a large one. Perform regular home maintenance and repair things before thy become expensive repairs.
I am always amazed by how many homes I drive past that are in disrepair. This is a toxic mold problem just waiting to happen!
Additional Tip: A house also happens to be our greatest asset in terms of our net worth… don’t let the most valuable thing you own waste away, this ‘your’ money!
2. Diffuse Thieves or Purification essential oils once a week!
You will need:
A cold-air nebulizer type diffuser (see image) – no other type of diffuser will address the prevention of mold, period.
And a couple bottles of either Thieves or Purification essential oil. Depending upon the size of your house, one bottle should last 1-3 months!
Run your diffuser for 15-30 minutes a day – or – for 6 hours a week.

Mold in a home can be very dangerous. It can cause health problems that can become very serious and even cause death. Many people may be unaware that there walls have a deadly mold hiding in them.
Mold spores and the toxins they produce have been linked to many health problems both in humans and animals. Many people may be having symptoms and be unaware of the possibility that the very reason they are not feeling well may be due to mold in their environment.
I enjoy watching shows like “Holmes on Homes“, “Extreme Makeover: Home Edition” and “Income Property“. One thing I have noticed about these shows lately is that more often they are encountering mold. Best estimates are that 70% of homes have mold at a level that could be hazardous to health.
What I like about Mike Holmes and Scott McGillvray are that when they do a renovation they assess where things are, do.g some demo to get an idea of what the structure is like. From there, if there are any problems, they will back track to find where things don’t need to be fixed and then reconstruct from that point.
Ty Penington takes a different route – he just demolishes and builds anew. However, if there any problems such as mold, it gets remediated before the demolition.
An environmental engineer by the name of Ed Close, after hearing about a natural way to combat mold, ran some studies to see if essential oils could help to fight mold (get the book or dvd at abundanthealth4u.com).
If you are experiencing chronic health problems or doing a renovation be sure to check for mold – one of Ty’s projects was for a single mom with several children whose husband and father died due to the mold. Home test kits are available at a variety of home stores.
Even if you do not see any visible signs of mold it could still be concealed in your walls which is why it is extremely important to check the plumbing, roof and walls for leaks before starting to do the renovation. If there are leaks – fix them and do it right so that the mold doesn’t return.
In the meantime, to help reduce the chances of mold or reduce the mold currently in your home, consider diffusing Thieves. The essential oils in Thieves have been proven in independent tests (some of which can be found at PubMed) and Dr. Closes’ books.

Mold can be hazardous to our health and very difficult to get rid of. It can be very tricky to discover and to also understand that mold could very well be the cause of many ailments going on in your life and your families life, or anyone exposed to a moldy environment.
There are many different types of mold, some of them not overly dangerous to be around, yet others are very toxic and dangerous. Black mold is very toxic and you may notice physical symptoms that range from allergic reactions to serious medical conditions. You may not even realize that there is black or toxic mold in your home until someone starts to get sick. The symptoms may come across like a sinus infection or asthma, and this in itself is not easy to relate to the possibility of having toxic mold in your home.
If you detect a musty smell, this could be a sign of black mold or other molds. If you live in area where you use an air conditioner, one sign of having black mold is while the air conditioner is running, if you smell a musty smell, this is most likely a sign of black mold and you need to remove it from your environment.
Should you notice the paint on your walls changing color or a stain becoming noticeable through wall paper, this is a possible sign of black mold. Once again it is important to eliminate it or seek professional help. It is highly important to understand, once you discover mold, you need to get rid of it and get it under control.
A wet climate or a tropical humid climate are areas that could be a concern for the development of mold. Humidity 55% or higher could be a breeding ground for toxic mold. One of the most common places for the possible development of mold is in basements.
If you feel it is black mold, the easiest and best solution is to diffuse therapeutic grade blend of Thieves essential oil. Not only will you be breathing in the aroma of the Thieves blend but the molecules of the oil will be in the air and helping to protect your environment from mold. If you discover a large area of black mold, do not try removing it yourself, as this could be very hazardous to you. Disposing of the substance must be handled in the proper way. A professional should be brought in to help assess the situation.
High quality essential oils, can play an important role in helping to prevent toxic black mold from occurring. It is so easy to prevent mold by using Young Living oils and to prevent mold from coming back.
10 Steps to Prevent and Eliminate Toxic Mold
If you do not have mold – in a Nebulizer Diffuser, diffuse the Thieves or Purification blend of essential oils for 15 minutes every 3 hours, or you may instead diffuse for 8 hours, non-stop, once a week. Tip: you can buy a light timer to plug your differ into and set the timer.
If you have mold — Eliminate it and keep it from coming back
Sampling – you may want to contact a professional to have sampling done to determine the type of mold, and whether it is toxic or not. Toxic mold must be dealt with differently than non-toxic mold. If you cannot afford to have professional sampling done you can still try the 10 steps. Tip: the DIY mold sampling test kits are not accurate, so it is best to avoid them. Tip: it is best to discard any items that you do not need or want any longer – and if you do have mold do not sell or donate any items that may be contaminated with mold spores as this will give someone else the problem.
Diffuse – after your samples have been collected, diffuse the Thieves essential oil blend for 24-72 hours, nonstop, in the space. One Cold-air Nebulizer diffuser works well in spaces up to 1000 sq. ft. in size. If possible, and for best results, leave the room closed and sealed during this intensive diffusing. This will allow maximum penetration and absorption of the essential oil. It is best to ‘not’ be living in the space(s) that are being diffused as the essential oils, though they are nontoxic, will be too intense to stay around for longer than a few minutes after the essential oil mist is in the air. Do not leave children, pets, or fish in the space(s) while the 24 hour non-stop diffusing is taking place.
Repair all leaks – repair all leaks and eliminate all sources of moisture. This is a must!
Clean thoroughly – if sampling identifies NO toxic mold, then after diffusing has been completed, clean visible mold and stains with the Thieves Household Cleaner, undiluted. Use protective equipment and take precautions to avoid contact with and breathing mold spores while cleaning.
If sampling identifies Toxic Mold – contact a professional mold remediation service to have infested materials removed and properly disposed. Do not sell or donate any items that may be contaminated with mold spores, as this will give someone else the problem.
Re-sample – have your professional re-sample to be sure all sources of mold have been identified and remediated.
Repeat – if necessary, repeat steps 1 through 6, above.
Remove – mold infested materials, seal in plastic and properly dispose. If you do NOT have toxic mold, you may dispose sealed materials in your garbage.
Molds can be detrimental to our health. By taking the proper steps to eliminate mold from your environment, be it your home or your work space, this will make for a much healthier and safer place for you, others, and even your pets. “I was introduced to Young Living by my mom and I have been using a lot of their products for a while now. Thieves Household Cleaner® and Black Mold in Bathroom
“Because of the unusual wet fall, winter, and spring we have had and the leaking shower head in our bathroom, we got a lot of black mold in our shower. All of the cocking was totally black. Any cracks in the tile grout were black. The fiberglass bottom of the shower had black growth also.
A friend of mine just bought an older home. She told me how she totally cleaned the moldy shower in the house she just bought. She removed the caulking with black mold on it. She scrubbed the entire shower, then sprayed chlorine bleach all over the shower, She sprayed an extra amount where the old caulking was to make sure the mold was completely gone. She let it dry a day, then re-caulked it with new silicone caulking. She was so excited that her shower looked new again.
When she came to help me do the same with my shower, She said the only thing that will completely get rid of the black mold is chlorine bleach. She knew I didn’t want to use anything that would harm my body by breathing it in or leaving a residue in the shower.
We first removed all the caulking with a flat head screwdriver, then we tackled the cleaning job. I made up a strong solution of Thieves Cleaner. I used 3 tablespoons of Thieves Cleaner per one 32 ounce sprayer bottle of filtered water. We cleaned the entire shower with the cleaner. She was amazed that the cleaner cleaned so well. Were able to get stubborn soap scum off the tiles by spraying it with Thieves Cleaner, then scrubbing it with a #220 waterproof sandpaper. In the hard to get crack areas we used a stiff scrub brush and an old toothbrush.
After we totally cleaned the shower and washed it down, we sprayed all the areas to be caulked with Thieves Cleaner. We let the shower dry over night, then caulked it with new silicone caulking. The shower looks great!
My friend was absolutely amazed that we did not need to use chlorine bleach. She said, ‘that Thieves Cleaner is amazing. It works better than 409, Windex, and chlorine bleach. I am going to get some.’

Thieves Household Cleaner® and Essential Oil to Kill Mold in an Older Home
“We recently moved from California to Utah into a home that was built in the 1880′s. It wasn’t until I was deep cleaning that I realized there were some serious mold issues!!
I got some samples, had them tested and there were several strains of molds, common and not-so common. We’d moved to an area that had no other homes available for rent and I was panicked, since I’m extremely sensitive to mold, having been ‘poisoned’ by black mold about 10 years ago. There was nowhere else to go while our home is being built.
I immediately got our my Thieves Cleaner, Thieves Essential Oil, Nebulizer Essential Oil Diffuser, rubber gloves and face mask! I sprayed the Thieves Cleaner straight onto the affected areas and just left it for several hours. I began diffusing Thieves Oil – and did so for the next 48 hours [learn more about how to use these products to get rid of and prevent mold]. In the basement, where there was a lot of mildew and mold, I sprayed a mixture of Thieves Oil, Thieves Cleaner and grain alcohol directly onto the brick walls. Then I left the house to rest.

I sprayed the affected areas again, soaking liberally, and wiped them down after a few minutes. The mold is gone! In the basement, the same thing had happened.
