"There is nothing in a caterpillar that tells you it's going to be a butterfly." ~ R. Buckminster Fuller

Distilling at the Young Living Farm.Quite often I am reminded that most people do not realize that essential oils are almost always adulterated. The fact is, about 98 percent of all essential oils in the entire world are adulterated. That means only 2 percent are what the term “100% Pure” once meant. Today 100% Pure and even Organic, are not indicators that an essential oil is high or superior quality.

While some may not care if they’re using nothing more than a cocktail of chemicals, others do care. Many do care if that essential oil they’re using or which is contained in a product they’re buying could actually be harmful to their health.

Unfortunately, we live in a world where price point, profits, and share holders dictate what is ultimately put on the market. With little if any care as to the long-term health effects of the consumer. The matter of everything being deregulated leaves the average person in a very dicey position. Below is an excerpt from the Essential Oils Desk Reference that I think explains the matter quite clearly and begins to provide us with the information ‘we’ need to know to make educated choices…

Today much of the lavender oil sold in America is the hybrid called lavandin, grown and distilled in China, Russia, France, and Tasmania. It is brought into France and cut with synthetic linalyl acetate to improve the fragrance. Then propylene glycol, DEP, or DOP (solvents that have no smell and increase the volume) are added and it is sold in the United States as lavender oil.

Often lavandin is heated to evaporate the camphor and then is adulterated with synthetic linalyl acetate. Most consumers don’t know the difference, and are happy to buy it for $7 to $10 per half ounce in health food stores, beauty salons, grocery and department stores, and through mail order. This is one of the reasons why it is important to know about the integrity of the company or vendor from which you purchase your essential oils.

Frankincense is another example of a commonly adulterated oil. The frankincense resin that is sold in Somalia costs between $30,000 and $35,000 per ton. A great deal of time 12 hours or more is required to properly steam-distill this essential oil from the resin, making the oil very expensive. Read the rest of this entry »

The fir tree, commonly known as the Christmas tree, is renowned for its benefits to the respiratory system, as well as its ability to soothe over-worked muscles and joints. The balsam fir essential oil (Abies balsamea) recently harvested is exclusive to Young Living and contains optimal levels of four important constituents: alpha pineane, beta pineane, camphene, and limonene, which give it many of its soothing characteristics. idaho-balsam-fir-plant-tree

Gary Young has cut, distilled and tested the fir tree during each month of the year, and has found (through testing in the YL lab) that it’s medicinal properties and chemical constituents were most potent  during the most frigid months of the Idaho winter.

Essential oils rich in limonene, such as: lemon, orange, tangerine, and Idaho balsam fir have been shown in clinical studies to have potent anticarcinogenic effects. According to a study at the University of Indiana (Crowell P. Prevention and therapy of cancer by dietary monoterpenes. J Nutr. 1999 Mar;129(3):775S-778S.), “monoterpenes would appear to act through multiple mechanisms in the chemopre-vention and chemotherapy of cancer.” Studies using 1-15 grams a day of limonene in very advanced cancer patients resulted in almost 20% of the patients going into remission.

Gary said, “the trees are saturated  with essential oil during these coldest months, the oils protect the needles from freezing.”

Gary Young’s hands-on approach during this and other harvests in the Young Living Idaho, Ecuador, France, and Utah farms is what sets Young Living apart from everyone else. Not only do we ensure that the purest, most potent essential oils are harvested and distilled on our own farms, but our sourcing specialists also routinely visit our suppliers to share their expert knowledge. This continued commitment to quality ensures the status as the world leader in essential oils.

Idaho Balsam  Fir is a conifer oil distilled in northern Idaho that has a refreshing and  uplifting scent. It is harvested during in the coldest winter  months when the essential oil yield is highest. Those who have assisted  Gary in harvesting have reported unusually high energy, stamina and good mood,  the smell of balsam intoxicating during the long cold days. When used in massage,  it has a soothing effect on muscle and body discomfort associated with  exercise.

Medical Properties: Anticoagulant, anti-inflammatory.

Uses: Throat/lung/sinus infections, fatigue, arthritis/rheumatism, urinary tract infections, scoliosis/lumbago/sciatica.

Balsam Fir is very effective for  soothing overworked or tired muscles. Combine balsam fir with marjoram for ligaments, and balsam fir  with lemongrass for tendons and joints.

For dietary, aromatic or topical use. When using as a supplement, dilute one drop in 4 fl. oz. of liquid such as goat’s or rice milk.

Fragrant Influence: Grounding, stimulating to the mind, and relaxing to the body.

How to Use Balsam Fir

Massage: Dilute 4 drops balsam fir essential oil with one teaspoon V-6 Massage Oil, or olive oil.

Directly inhale: Put one drop in palm, rub palms together, cup palms over the nose (without touching face), inhale deeply three times.

Diffuse: in a specifically made diffuser (diffusing therapeutic-grade essential oils eliminates odors, not mask, and is far safer than synthetic/chemical air fresheners). Never use heat as a means to diffuse as it destroys the therapeutic benefits of your high quality essential oil.

Balsam Fir Tips and Testimonials

“I have had such AMAZING experiences with Idaho Balsam Fir. After my thyroid surgery about six weeks ago, I was looking for an oil that would help the pain at the site of the incision. PanAway was working, but not for the DEEP ache I was feeling. I tried Idaho Balsam Fir and within five minutes the pain was gone, as well as the dull throbbing ache.

It also worked great for the tight muscles from “protecting” my incision. You know how you have funny posture to protect an incision?

I remember Gary Young talking about Mary taking it for pain at convention and thought I’ll take it in capsules!”  It has helped with general body aches and pains so well that I am using it where I would have used Tylenol in my old life! When my children are achy, I rub a few drops neet down their spine, Raindrop Technique style.” ~  Jessica

Gary Young says that this oil will heal burns faster than Lavender.  It also reduces pain as fast or faster than Helichrysum.

Idaho Balsam Fir is found in these essential oil blends:
Believe, BLM, En-R-Gee, Egyptian Gold, Gratitude, Sacred Mountain (one of my favorite blends), Transformation

Idaho Balsam Fir is found in these products:

BLM capsules (Bone, Ligament, Muscle), Animal Scents Ointment (yes, it’s for pets & people!), and Sacred Mountain Bar Soap

As a long-time gardener and natural landscape designer I have the greatest appreciation of soil and the microorganisms in it and I want to share some gardening information with you. Most think that tilling, turning over, adding compost and so forth will produce the best soil for your garden seeds and plants. You may want to take a couple minutes and read what Don Chapman has to say about soil (below), his information is no doubt unlike any other you’ve read in gardening books and magazines (which in my opinion, only discusses gardening on the superficial level); this is an often unrealized fact that most don’t even know about. Since plants, soil, and gardening are one of my areas of expertise, and since this is prime season for gardeners making their plans for 2010 I will be posting articles of some of my favorite things and tips in the coming days. Enjoy and have a terrific gardening season! chamomile-plants

Close-Up on a Seed

by Don Chapman, President of Bio-Organics

New Year’s Greetings to you and may 2010 be filled with success.

It occurs to me that my newsletters have often spoken about the many benefits of mycorrhizal fungi and other soil organisms, but there has not been much mention of the details of how those “plant-friendlies” function.

Let’s begin by planting a seed. As a root emerges and begins to extend downward into the soil, it actually starts a complex sequence of actions. If there have not been any living roots in that garden’s soil, as during the winter months in northern climates, then the microbial organisms will have either gone dormant or deposited microscopic spores (fungi “seeds”) during previous growing seasons. A healthy soil will be filled with countless billions of these sorts of tiny organisms patiently lying in wait for a new generation of plant roots to appear.

Also waiting along with the beneficials are viruses, harmful fungi spores, and other plant pathogens. There is always some competition for seeds and roots – good guys versus bad guys – going on underground. Indeed, if a seed takes too long to sprout, as when soil conditions are too cold, some decomposing types of fungi can enter and make mush of meaty seeds before they have a chance to get going.

A growing root has a lubricant coating that exudes chemical signals. Call it a “smell” for sake of simplicity. This smell lets all the soil critters know that a new growing season has arrived – and the effect is like ringing a dinner bell. Mycorrhizal fungi spores activate, quickly attach to the root, and begin fulfilling their dual role of protection/nourishment.

With mycorrhizae, the new root is able to uptake much greater amounts of nutrients than it could on its own, plus there is now a protective zone surrounding it. This “Mycorrhizosphere” consists of sticky fungi root-threads (“hyphae”) that physically block many pathogens from gaining access to the root. There are also anti-viral substances generated by the hyphae.

As the plant roots develop and extend further out into the soil, many other soil organisms are supported. Bacteria populations explode into huge numbers, digesting organic matter and dissolving mineral elements into forms that the mycorrhizal fungi can deliver to their host plants. In return, the plant is kept busy gathering sunlight and sharing the resulting photosynthates (sugars and carbohydrates) through root exudates.

Note that endomycorrhizal fungi actually penetrate into the outer layer of plant root cells, where nutrient exchange takes place. This is a more direct approach than simply feasting on exudates outside the root. Ectomycorrhizal fungi (such as occur on oaks and pines) form more of a sheath around roots, but both types are critically important to the health and vigor of plants.

So a sprouted seed triggers all sorts of soil activity, with the growing tips of the roots being the “dinner bell” mechanism. As the oldest sections of roots nearer the plant age and harden, especially for trees and other perennials, they become more like conduit pipes rather than foraging tools. The real action is always out around the gel-covered new roots.

Plants and their soil associates are far more complicated than most realize. There are many forms of communication that take place, and subtle differences in appearance can prompt insects to destroy “unhealthy” plants, alarms are sounded when an attack occurs, and signals from a stressed plant spur increased efforts from their supportive mycorrhizal fungi. It’s an ongoing battle between “the forces of good and evil” as far as plants are concerned. Luckily for us, the beneficials usually prevail due to superior numbers and/or powerful defensive weapons that can be used to protect their life-giving host plants.

All this is good reason to encourage bio-life in soil and to make sure that seedlings and transplant roots have the right kind of friendly fungi spores available very early in their life. Blending mycorrhizal powder into potting soils, or drenching trays of young plants with water-soluble inoculant, or dipping bareroot transplants (especially fruit trees, grapes, or berries) into a clinging spore slurry, or putting spores under garden seeds will ensure the immediate presence of “good guys.” The new roots will be thrilled to see them waiting (in a silent plant version of thrilled, of course).

Good growing, my friends,

Don Chapman

"There is nothing in a caterpillar that tells you it's going to be a butterfly." ~ R. Buckminster Fuller

balsam-fir-farm-idahoOn the fifth day of Christmas Young Living scent to me 5 Balsam Fir, 4 Frankincense, 3 Wise Men, 2 NingXia Reds and a bottle of Lavender oil.

Did You Know?

In Biblical times there was only one other thing that had more value than Frankincense and that, wasn’t gold – it was Balsam. Interestingly, research from Israel suggests Balsam oil was called “gold.”

The researchers who found these latest scrolls and translations are saying now it might have been Balsam oil, Frankincense and Myrrh that was brought to the Christ Child – and not frankincense, myrrh and the metal gold. Frankincense, Myrrh and Balsam were very commonly used throughout the regions, and Balsam grew on the inland north slopes of southern Arabia, north of where the Frankincense trees grew then and still grow today.

What a treat to get Balsam Fir.  I remember one very profound healing for myself with this precious oil.  I was listening to Gary Young on a conference call, when he was able to take a well needed break from harvesting Balsam Fir in Idaho. I had been suffering from upper chest pain for several months, nothing terrible, but the pain was constantly there.  It was a feeling of pain in my muscles. After listening to Gary and better understanding the amazing healing qualities of Balsam Fir, I decided to put several drops across my chest. I am always amazed at the results that I receive when using Young Living therapeutic-grade essential oils. This time was another of those ah ha moments.  Within seconds the pain in my chest was totally gone! I did not have any more pain but I continued to apply the oil for the next few days and the pain has not returned.

Young Livings balsam fir is harvested and distilled in northern Idaho by Gary Young. This incredible oil has been used for years in folk medicine for its supportive properties of the circulatory and respiratory systems. Balsam fir is traditionally used to aid tired and sore muscles.*

Product Story
Balsam fir looks much like a beautiful conifer tree-similar to something you’d decorate during the Christmas season. At the balsam fir winter harvest in northern Idaho, the entire tree is cut and delicately distilled. Gary Young personally selects the trees and oversees the entire harvest and distillation process. During the past few harvest seasons, Gary has also invited Young Living members to participate in this unique event.

If you are interested in helping with the harvest of Balsam Fir, please contact me and I will provide you with more information on this amazing time.  The harvest will be during the month of January in 2010 and again in 2011 and possibly more winters after.

The plant constituents in balsam fir have historically been used to support respiratory function and ease muscular and joint discomfort. To use balsam fir for respiratory support, simply inhale straight from the bottle or include a few drops in a Young Living diffuser-the fresh pine scent is very grounding and relaxing. Balsam fir can also be beneficial as part of therapeutic massage. Balsam Fir aids in supporting the circulatory and respiratory systems and may also help ease discomfort following rigorous physical activity.*

To use, mix one part balsam fir with one part Young Living V-6TM Enhanced
Vegetable Oil Complex and massage onto trouble spots. The primary natural plant constituents absorbed through the skin are alpha-pinene, beta pinene, camphene, and limonene. When used together, these key constituents can work to soothe localized muscular discomfort.

Balsam fir is found in Young Living  Believe, Egyptian Gold, En-R-Gee, Gratitude, Sacred Mountain , and Transformation essential oil blends, as well as in Deep ReliefTM Essential Oil.

Not only is Balsam Fir a must for every home because of the medicinal benefits but the scent is so beautiful and especially perfect during the Christmas time.  When you diffuse the essential oil of Balsam Fir it smells like being in the forest and is a very blessed scent and wonderful air freshener!!

There are many, many essential oil brands on the market today in America. Aromatherapy is becoming greater in popularity and industry. Wonderful smelling plant oils, labeled “natural”; who wouldn’t think that sounds good! The problem is that in North America, there really are no set standards for therapeutic grade quality by any government agency yet. There are regulations for things like “organic” before you can call them such, but not for essential oils which are to be used for medicinal purposes. Therefore, anyone, producing even the worst quality essential oil can slap “therapeutic grade” or “pure” on the label and get away with it. So what is a consumer to to with so many brands to weed through?

Educating oneself in the criteria’s necessary to create an therapeutic grade oil is a good place to start. Although there are no government agencies in America to validate therapeutic grade oils, there are in Europe. There, they have the Association French Normalization Organization Regulation and the International Standards Organization (AFNOR and ISO)  standards which test for purity and potency. Presently, Young Living is the only company I know of that subjects their oils to AFNOR and ISO tests-even though they do not have to. The owner has been known to discard whole batches of oils that did not pass these tests, the oils of which other companies would gladly use.

Although AFNOR and ISO standards are good, they are not enough to prove an oil is therapeutic grade as they only focus on a few chemical constituents and purity.  The following table has some of the standards necessary to create a truly therapeutic grade essential oil. In these difficult economic times many people are needing help and more and more people are reaching out and truly helping people who may be suffering from various situations in their lives.  There are so many ways that can help to begin to turn people’s lives around.  Having good food and good water in our bellies and a roof over or heads is something that many of us take for granted. Unfortunately for many, these comforts aren’t included in their lives right now.  They keep searching for ways to make an income and yet it is becoming an increasingly daunting task.  I would like to reach out and share with people how they can make an income, be healthier and show other people how they too can make this transformation.

There are many ways to reach out and help.  Perhaps you have a full pantry or full medicine cabinet. Do you know anyone who does not?  Yes we have our food drives, which are important to give to year round.  What about taking a look around, or listening to what someone is saying.  You may discover that person would really appreciate a bag or a box of food from your pantry and even items for their medicine cabinet. You don’t have to spend money to do this, just open up your hearts.

Showing our gratitude and being gracious are two very endearing qualities.   I continue to show my gratitude to God for blessing us with His healing plants that He so graciously,  put at our fingertips.  I am grateful for Gary Young for bringing us essential oils in their purest form, so that we are able to reach for a bottle of essential oil, rather then a prescription drug, to help us with what is ailing us.  The bottle of essential oil may be very supportive, the prescription drug may mask the problem and possibly cause even more problems.

I feel it is my duty to not only share with others, but to teach and train them to take the necessary steps to avoid  the diseases and health problems most people now accept as  commonplace.  Simple lifestyle adjustments, diet change, use of essential oils, and essential oil enhanced personal care products and supplements, can make a world of difference.  Taking control of our health is a form of independence.  Establishing a home business with Young Living Essential Oils, can lead to and unleash and unforeseen passion you did not know you  had.  You can be an inspiration to others around you by taking this leap of faith.

work-home-people-business

The simple fact that by taking this leap of faith, your stress level could go down and you begin to feel better and better about life and yourself.   Stress is the biggest culprit that can break people’s spirit and it can cause so many health problems.

I am very fortunate to be involved with one of  the most dynamic and uplifting parts of our economy, which is health care and  most specifically health education and prevention, and even more specifically,  Network Marketing.  You may think;  “How is health care uplifting?” My thoughts are; “Yes it can be uplifting if we make the appropriate lifestyle changes to make the shift in our health care.”

Historically, when the economy goes down, network marketing goes up.   That’s because people who are not usually interested in network marketing, suddenly find it compelling to be able to add $300.00 + to their monthly income.  Sometimes that $300.00 is the difference between staying afloat and going down.

We are fortunate that Young Living is  doing so well.  Steve Bently, the CFO (he headed the United Way  Foundation for many years), mentioned recently that in an economic downturn  the people who have the most money (or at least the steadiest income) are  among those involved with Network Marketing.  In his report about the  Company he also reminded us how important our Young Living Farms are.   They make the difference between just being an oils broker and actually sourcing the oils ourselves.

Our farms started from one man, Gary Young.  He started growing our first plants of Lavender on a quarter acre of land in Spokane, Washington.  Since that time in 1989, he has grown the company to where we now have four farms totaling  over 4,000 acres of farm land.  Gary knows he must continue planting because just like animals becoming extinct, so are plants.

farm-idaho-utah-ecuador-france

The integrity of Gary Young and the love he has for God, his family,  for all of us and the world, is truly inspiring. He started the company working in the dirt and loving the plants and to this day you can find Gary working in the dirt, fixing machinery, developing new distillers, boating into the Amazon in search of new healing plants, traveling the world to meet with other oil brokers, trekking on the Frankincense trail to assure us that we are getting quality resins, to traveling and teaching those who want to learn.  Gary’s passion is bringing healing to the world.  He is a huge part of what drives people to share Young Living with the world.

How is it that one man could align so wonderfully with so many people?  There are so many reasons and one in particular is how he assures all of us that the products we so endearingly have in our homes and proudly share with others are of the utmost quality because of how they get from the seed to the bottle.  The quality of our essential oils is unmatched by few.

Yes there is a learning curve because, using therapeutic essential oils is much different than anything else. That’s where I come in.  I will help you to get started in learning how to grow your business.   We also have the Essential Oils Desk Reference – it’s invaluable.  There is a lot to learn, but the Desk Reference is what helps you to learn about the oils and the many ways that they may help.

Essential oils can pretty much take care of most illness, discomfort, first aid, sicknesses, wounds and much more.   My lifestyle is about healing and helping people.  And being a Reiki Master and practitioner of Raindrop Technique and a Young Living family member, keeps me on this path.

It is an added bonus to have these fine products that keep me and my family healthy and because I am a wholesale member, I get my products at a 24% discount and mostly paid for because of my Young Living income.  And then by getting many of my products through our Essential Rewards products, I save even more money and get free products.

What do people need right now?

  • Spend less money-Teach people to save 30-50% on their household, personal care, and home medical expenses with Young Living.
  • Make more money -Show people how even by sharing with a few people here and there, they can bring in a side income.
  • Keep more money- Tell people how to save during tax time because of the major benefits through legitimate business deductions associated with their business, including for things they are already spending money on, such as vehicle mileage, cell phones, internet, and a portion of their mortgage, rent and utilities.

For those who do want to start a business and earn an extra income or a larger income to be able to support their family and to pay bills and do the extra things that they enjoy such as travel, massage, chiropractic, Healing Touch, and so much more.. I would love to help you to achieve this very attainable dream.

If you are looking for a company that is in the natural/complimentary health industry then you need look no further, as there is no company out there that comes close to Young Living Essential Oils.

Make money and help people at the same time. What more could one ask for in a business then that. Let me help you with both your health and your wealth – together, we CAN make a difference!

Becoming a Young Living distributor is more than an additional income or a home business, it is a way of life – the Young Living Lifestyle. I would like to talk with you and get you started, so please contact me!!

Monthly Essential Oil Classes in the greater Seattle area, Everett, WA

In July of this year, 2009, I was fortunate to go to our Young Living Essential Oil Farm in St. Maries, Idaho to help with harvesting of our Lavender plants.  This is my third year going and each year is a new experience.  Every trip is priceless. Driving up to the farm absolutely takes my breath away.  From the beauty of the purple and lavender hues of the Lavender plants to the lush greens of the Melissa plants and all the surrounding trees.  Ahhh, the scent of lavender and the clean mountain air is like being in Heaven.lavender-farm

At the farm is where I truly became aware of how precious Young Living Therapeutic Grade (YLTG) essential oils are and why the purity is very genuine.  From the location and altitude, to the lush, rich soil and the fact that NEVER are chemicals sprayed on ANY of our crops on ANY of our four farms (Idaho—Mona, Utah— Simiane-La-Rotonde, France—Guayaquil, Ecuador—Over 4,000 acres of farmland.)  The amazing loving knowledge from seed to crop;  The plants must be cut when the time is right.  How?  “Refractometer/bricks” readings are done to assure they are at the right “bricks level” to harvest.  The plants must also be dry.  If they have been rained on, they will have to dry for a day or so, until dry.  Then the harvested plants are taken to the distillery and lay’s for many hours (24 hours or more) and is turned by pitchfork during that time. Again a “bricks” reading is taken.  Once again the “bricks level” has to be just right.  If not, the quality of the oil is not where it should be according to our standards.  Next, the Lavender gets put into the “cooker-distiller”.  The next important step is the temperature and the amount of time for “cooking”. VERY IMPORTANT!  For Lavender, it is distilled for at least 1 ½ hours.distillery-farm

Before our oils are ready for purchase they are tested at an independent lab and must pass strict standards  to be assured of their purity and therapeutic value.   AFNOR (Association French Normalization Organization Regulation) or ISO certification (International Standards Organization) has guidelines that must be strictly adhered to.  A set of standards that outlines the chemical profile and principal constituents that a quality essential oil should have.  These guidelines help buyers differentiate between a therapeutic grade essential oil and lower grade oil with a similar chemical makeup and fragrance.  All of Young Living Essential Oils are graded according to AFNOR standards.  Gary Young actually takes our testing a step beyond AFNOR, the Young Living Standard.  If Gary does not feel the oil meets his standards, he declines it.

It is SO important for people to understand the major differences of essential oils and the qualities that are available to purchase.  This is a good way to think about it; “All essential oils are NOT created equally”.  Like when comparing apples to oranges, they don’t compare.

This time at the farm, the Lavender was not quite ready to be harvested. However the Melissa was!!  Oh my, what a treat to be included in this splendid time of harvest.  I learned so much about Melissa.  Melissa is a female plant; she is particular, fragile, finicky, loving, warm and gentle.  The plant loves to be sung to and hugged. The first time I heard the workers singing in the fields was a sweet surprise and now I understand why they whistle and sing while working.  Melissa will actually wilt if she feels or hears your anger.  Our Idaho farm is one of our best farms for growing Melissa. Specifically because of the climate and altitude.   Oh and by the way, Young Living is the ONLY commercial grower of Melissa in the world!!  To me why would anyone choose to purchase pure essential oils elsewhere, when right here with Young Living Essential Oils, you have the best and assurity of purity!!
