Omega Blue (mercury-free fish oil supplement)Young Living, the world leader in essential oils, recently made a large donation of Omega Blue™ supplement to The Heritage School, a residential treatment center for at-risk adolescents. The donation will provide a year’s supply of the supplement to the school’s entire student body and is valued at more than $20,000. The school’s staff is already attributing improved behavior among the students to Omega Blue.

The omega-3 fatty acids found in Omega Blue—along with a proprietary blend of essential oils—support healthy cardiovascular and brain function. Omega-3s are also believed to stabilize mood and have a positive impact on depression.

I’m not at all surprised that the school is seeing vast improvement, it’s long been known that fish oil has dramatic affects on our brain’s chemistry and produces amazing results in emotional and physical health. I have always been a big fan of Young Living’s Omega Blue and highly recommend it! Omega Blue Fact Sheet.

Debbie Hamilton, director of health services at The Heritage School said…

“We have had a very encouraging response to Omega Blue. The quality of the product was recognized immediately by students, parents and staff members. We know that Omega Blue is a major contributing factor to the behavioral improvement we are seeing in many of our kids. Young Living’s generosity toward our school is greatly appreciated.”

The Heritage School is located in Provo, Utah, and offers a variety of therapy programs customized to fit the needs of each of its students. At-risk adolescents spend an average of 14 months at the school and then graduate equipped with the social and psychological tools they need to lead happy, productive lives.

“We are proud to be able to donate our products to an organization that does as much good as The Heritage School,” says Young Living CEO Doug Nelson. “Its mission of improving lives resonates with us, and it is a privilege to assist them in transforming the mental and physical health of their students.”

"There is nothing in a caterpillar that tells you it's going to be a butterfly." ~ R. Buckminster Fuller

Sadly High Cholesterol has become a medical crisis in the USA, and now includes children as young as 3 years old.  High Cholesterol creates a lengthy list of additional medical conditions, most of which have little to no outward signs, so it very easily becomes a silent killer.  One day you feel fine, the next day you could be in the ER being told you need bypass surgery or a roto-ruter of your heart’s arteries.  Many lifestyle choices we make every day contribute to our high cholesterol, however, it can also be genetically caused.

Part 3 of this series will focus on natural alternative choices you might want to consider adding to your daily regime as part of your lifestyle changes.  This article is not intended to diagnose or treat any illness or disease, and is provided for informational purposes only.

SALT LAKE CITY—July 14, 2011—Researchers in Iran have conducted a clinical trial investigating the effects of sage leaf extract on hyperlipidemia. This condition consists of abnormally elevated levels of LDL (bad) cholesterol, triglycerides and other factors that can lead to cardiovascular disease. Cardiovascular disease is the No. 1 killer of men and women in the United States with about 500,000 people dying from the disease each year.

The study demonstrated some exciting potential wellness benefits of sage, with participants’ triglycerides, LDL and total cholesterol dropping even as their HDL (good) cholesterol levels increased.  HC 061151-427, Date: June 30, 2011

RE: Sage Leaf Extract  May Be Safe and Effective in Treating hyperlipidemia.

Kianbakht S, Abasi B, Perham M, Hashem Dabaghian F. Antihyperlipidemic effects of Salvia officinalis L. leaf extract in patients with hyperlipidemia: a randomized doubleblind placebo-controlled clinical trial. Phytother Res. Apr 2011; [epub ahead of print]. doi:10.1002/ptr.3506.

Hyperlipidemia (abnormally elevated blood lipids or lipoprotein—total and low-density lipoprotein [LDL] cholesterol, very low-density lipoprotein [VLDL], triglycerides, and chylomicrons) can cause cardiovascular disease. Primary hyperlipidemia is caused by genetic mutations, and is divided into 3 categories: hypercholesterolemia, hypertriglyceridemia, and combined hyperlipidemia (elevated total cholesterol and triglycerides, and decreased high-density lipoprotein [HDL] cholesterol). Alternative treatments are required because some patients are resistant to current treatments.

Sage, (Salvia officinalis) has antihyperlipidemic effects in vitro. There is only 1 pilot clinical study that evaluates lipid levels other than blood triglyceride and VLDL. Hence, the purpose of this randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled study was to evaluate the efficacy and safety of sage leaf extract in treating primary hyperlipidemia.  Patients included in this study had  total cholesterol levels = 240-300 mg/dL At baseline and at study end, blood was collected, and levels of total cholesterol, triglycerides, VLDL, LDL cholesterol, HDL cholesterol, creatinine, and liver enzymes (serum glutamic-oxaloacetictransaminase [SGOT] and serum glutamic-pyruvic transaminase [SGPT]) were measured.

At study end, sage treatment reduced total cholesterol by 19.6%, triglycerides by 22.8%, LDL by 19.7%, and VLDL by 13.3% compared with baseline.

Sage increased HDL levels by 20.2% compared with baseline. This effect was significantly different from placebo: There was no significant effect on SGOT, SGPT, and creatinine levels. The authors conclude that since sage had no significant effects on SGOT, SGPT, and creatinine, it would not produce liver or kidney toxicity. Sage leaves had favorable effects on a variety of lipids. Thus, sage leaves may be useful for treating hypercholesterolemia and hypertriglyceridemia.

What does this study mean?  In non medical speak, this study showed that 500 mg. of sage taken 3 times a day for 2 months DECREASED total cholesterol, triglycerides and LDL cholesterol by 19.6-22.2% in only 2 months!  Additionally, HDH, good cholesterol was increased by 20.2%!  On top of that, NO ILL EFFECTS occurred on the liver or kidneys!  None!

The medical community and government are also studying the positive effects of Essential Oils on high cholesterol.  Here are some of their governmental findings.

Fish Oil found to lower cholesterol:  University of Maryland:  People who follow a Mediterranean-style diet tend to have higher HDL or “good” cholesterol levels, which help promote heart health. Inuit Eskimos, who get high amounts of omega-3 fatty acids from eating fatty fish, also tend to have increased HDL cholesterol and decreased triglycerides (fats in the blood). Several studies have shown that fish oil supplements reduce triglyceride levels. Finally, walnuts (which are rich in alpha linolenic acid or LNA, a type of omega-3 fatty acid) have been reported to lower total cholesterol and triglycerides in people with high cholesterol levels.  http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/19416695

A naturally sweet, indigestible fiber derived from chicory roots, FOS (fructooligosaccharides) are one of the best-documented, natural nutrients for promoting the growth of Lactobacilli and bifidobacteria bacteria, a key to sound health. FOS has also been clinically studied for its ability to increase magnesium and calcium absorption, lower blood glucose, cholesterol, and LDL levels, and to inhibit production of the reductase enzymes that can contribute to cancer. Because FOS can increase magnesium absorption, it can also lead to lowered blood pressure and better cardiovascular health.

JuvaTone JuvaTone is a special herbal complex designed to support the liver. The liver is one of the most important organs of the body. It purifies the blood and is a key to converting carbohydrates to energy. An overtaxed liver may affect our energy, digestion, and skin. Fats and bile within the liver can easily become oversaturated with oil-soluble toxins, synthetic chemicals, and heavy metals. As toxins build, the liver becomes taxed and stressed, resulting in aggravating skin conditions, rashes, fatigue, headaches, muscle pain, digestive disturbances, pallor, dizziness, irritability, mood swings, and mental confusion. The liver also plays a major role in helping the body detoxify. The final products of digestion are transported through the portal vein from the colon to the liver to be cleansed.  Choline bitartrate has been used in the treatment of many liver disorders, including elevated cholesterol levels, viral hepatitis, and cirrhosis.

Super B Super B is a comprehensive source of the B vitamins essential for good health, including, thiamine (vitamin B1), riboflavin (vitamin B2), niacin (vitamin B3), pyridoxine (vitamin B6), vitamin B12, biotin, folic acid, and PABA. It also includes minerals that aid the assimilation and metabolism of B vitamins.  Niacin is essential for turning carbo hydrates into energy. It lowers cholesterol and helps regulate blood sugar. At least 4.4 mg are needed for every 1,000 calories consumed to avoid pellagra.

Helichrysum (Helichrysum italicum) improves circulation and reduces blood viscosity. It is anticoagulant, regulates cholesterol, stimulates liver cell function, and reduces plaque deposits from the veins and arteries.

EndoGize A daily supplement expressly formulated to support and maintain a healthy and balanced endocrine system in women.  Contains many ingredients, including but not limited to Phosphatidylcholine, which makes cholesterol more soluble and less able to cause hardening of the arteries.

Rosemary (Rosmarinus officinalis) reduces indigestion and helps regulate cholesterol. It is also antifungal, antiparasitic, antibacterial and helps cleanse the liver.

Grapefruit Essential Oil:  Israeli scientists may have discovered an effective new way to treat high cholesterol and diabetes naturally. Dr. Yaakov Nahmias from the Benin School of Engineering and Computer Science at Hebrew University and his colleagues have discovered that naringenin, a molecule in grapefruits that gives the fruit its bitter taste, can help to treat arteriosclerosis, hyper-metabolism, and even diabetes.  The study, which was recently published in the journal PLoS One, explains that when a highly-bioavailable ‘nano-complex’ of naringenin is consumed just before a meal that is high in fat and sugar, it can reduce the development of bad cholesterol by roughly 42 percent, and actually increase insulin sensitivity by 64 percent.

As you can see, Young living offers many natural alternative Therapeutic Grade Essential Oil products that promote lowering your cholesterol, along with a healthier lifestyle and food choices.  If you choose to go through the fast food drive through a few times a week, I suspect not much will help you lower your cholesterol, whether you’re taking a prescription or using a natural product.  Essential Oils do not come with a laundry list of side effects like cholesterol lowering prescriptions do!

I find it very interesting that our government has published well over 300 studies on using Essential Oils to lower cholesterol with positive outcomes.  I find this funny because they are using dried herbs in their studies,  not pure therapeutic grade essential oils.  Can you imagine how many more positive studies they would have if they were using Young living Therapeutic Grade Essential Oils, the real deal, instead of dried herbs with very little essential oil left in them?  I feel positive that they manipulate their results to continue to support the pharmaceutical industry, as no one in any part of our goverment wants to see the big pharmaceutical companies go broke.

I apologize for the length of these 3 cholesterol articles.  I wanted to give you all the information possible so that you can make a well informed choice when deciding what to do about your high cholesterol.

First, a quick refresher course on basic cholesterol facts.

Knowing the Good vs. the Bad Cholesterol

Not all cholesterol in your blood is bad for you. There are three kinds of blood cholesterol that you should know about: HDL (good cholesterol), LDL, (bad cholesterol) and triglycerides.

Good Cholesterol, HDL, Helps to keep the arteries from clogging up Protects against heart disease,  Good level =60mg/dL or Higher

Bad Cholesterol, LDL, Builds up and blocks your arteries.  Helps to cause heart disease, Good level =Less than 100mg/dL if you have high risk for heart disease Less than 130mg/dL if you are otherwise healthy

Triglycerides are another form of fat in your blood that can raise your risk for heart disease. You may need treatment if your triglycerides are:  Borderline High (150-199 mg/dL), High (200 mg/dL or more)

Now let’s talk about the medications your doctor will likely prescribe for you.  ALL prescription medications come with a laundry list of side effects, some which are worse then the disease they are used to treat.

If you’re taking medication to lower bad cholesterol (LDL), you may still have a cholesterol problem and not even know it. That’s because there are two other main parts of cholesterol—good cholesterol (HDL) and triglycerides (trigs)—that may need more help, that 1 cholesterol medication may not work on.

What is a drug interaction?

If you take 2 or more medicines at the same time, the way your body processes each drug can change. When this happens, the risk of side effects from each drug increases and each drug may not work the way it should. This is called a “drug-drug interaction.” Vitamins and herbal supplements can also affect the way your body processes medicine.

Certain foods or drinks can also prevent your medicine from working the way it should or make side effects worse. This is called a “drug-food interaction.”

Drug-drug interactions and drug-food interactions can be dangerous. Be certain that your doctor knows all of the over-the-counter and prescription medicines, vitamins and herbal supplements that you are taking. Also, talk to your doctor before you take any new over-the-counter or prescription medicine, or use a vitamin or herbal supplement.

If you do choose to take a prescription, it’s important to take medicines exactly as your doctor tells you to. Ask your doctor whether you need to avoid any foods or drinks while using your cholesterol-lowering medicine.

What are some common cholesterol-lowering medicines?

Several types of medicine are used to treat high cholesterol levels.. Your doctor  may prescribe more than 1 of these drugs at a time because combinations of these medicines can be more effective, although that increases the risk of serious side effects..

Statins (also called HMG-CoA reductase inhibitors) slow down your body’s production of cholesterol. These drugs also remove cholesterol buildup from your arteries (blood vessels).

Resins (also called bile acid sequestrants) bind to bile acids. Bile acids help with digestion, and are made by your liver using cholesterol. When resins bind to the bile, the body gets rid of them. This prompts your body to use excess cholesterol to make more bile acids. This lowers your LDL cholesterol level.

Cholesterol absorption inhibitors help lower your cholesterol by reducing the amount that is absorbed by your intestines. This type of medicine is often given in combination with a statin.

Fibrates (also called fibric acid derivatives) help lower your cholesterol by reducing the amount of triglycerides (fats) in your body and by increasing your level of “good” cholesterol (also called HDL, or high-density lipoprotein).

Niacin (also called nicotinic acid) is a B vitamin. When given in large doses, it can lower your levels of triglycerides and LDL cholesterol, and increase your HDL cholesterol level.

Prescription  Omega-3 Fatty Acid:. the most common side effects of Lovaza include flu-like symptoms, infections, back pain, skin rashes, upset stomach and a change in your sense of taste. fever, chills, body aches, flu symptoms;  chest pain; or uneven heartbeats., back pain; unusual or unpleasant taste in your mouth; upset stomach, belching; or mild skin rash.

Lovaza can help lower your triglyceride levels. But consider the following facts before you decide to take it:

There is no clinical evidence indicating that Lovaza is any purer or more effective than a comparable, non-prescription fish oil supplement.

Too much of a good thing is often a bad thing. The high concentrations of DHA and EPA in Lovaza may only be necessary for those with extremely high triglyceride levels. It is often prescribed for others without this condition, which may be dangerous.

It is very expensive, and since you can get fish oil from other sources, it is an unnecessary expense. In some places, it can cost up to $2 per pill. With a recommended dose of 4 pills per day, that’s $8 per day, or $240 per month! Even generic Lovaza if you can find it will cost at least 75 cents per pill. Compare that to about $20 per month for a very high quality fish oil. You can see how it just doesn’t make any sense.

It can also cause certain digestive issues, including dyspepsia and eructation, chest pain, migraines and respiratory problems.

Warnings

Call your doctor if you have any of these signs:

Do not use these drugs if you have problems with your liver or gallbladder.

People who have bleeding problems, heart disease, stomach ulcers, kidney disease, or an under-active thyroid should talk to their doctor about the risks of taking these medicines.

Do not use these medicines if you are pregnant or nursing.

Use these medicines with caution if you are also taking Gemfibrozil, Fenofibrates, Amiodarone, Verapamil, or blood thinners (anticoagulants

People who take Spironolactone should talk to their doctor before taking Colestipol (Colestid

Lovaza may affect certain blood tests., Test to check your liver (ALT), Test to check your cholesterol (LDL-C)

Lowering your “bad” cholesterol (also called LDL, or low-density lipoprotein) can reduce your risk of having a heart attack or stroke. A number of lifestyle changes can help you improve your cholesterol level (see the box below). However, if these lifestyle changes don’t help after about 6 months to 1 year, your doctor may suggest medicine to lower your cholesterol.

Even if you take cholesterol-lowering medicine, it’s important to keep up with your lifestyle changes. Eating a healthy diet and being physically active can make your medicine more effective. Your doctor can give you tips on how to make healthy food choices and include physical activity in your daily routine.

Niacin to boost your HDL, ‘good,’ cholesterol

By Mayo Clinic staff

Original article:http://www.nlm.nih.gov/medlineplus/cholesterol.html

Niacin is an important B vitamin that may raise your HDL, “good,” cholesterol.  By Mayo Clinic staff

Niacin, a B vitamin, has long been used to increase high-density lipoprotein (HDL), or the “good,” cholesterol. HDL cholesterol helps sweep up low-density lipoprotein (LDL), or the “bad,” cholesterol, in your bloodstream. Although niacin is readily available and effective, it hasn’t gotten much attention compared to other cholesterol drugs.

Most discussion about cholesterol focuses on lowering your low-density lipoprotein (LDL), or “bad,” cholesterol. That’s still an important goal. But boosting your HDL level can be just as important as lowering your LDL cholesterol. Taking niacin — either by itself or along with other cholesterol-lowering medication — may help control your total cholesterol level.

What is niacin?

Niacin (nicotinic acid) is a B vitamin that’s used by your body to turn carbohydrates into energy. Niacin also helps keep your nervous system, digestive system, skin, hair and eyes healthy. That’s why niacin is often a part of a daily multivitamin, though most people get enough niacin from the food they eat.

You may see niacin labeled in different ways. As part of a multivitamin or supplement, it’s often just referred to as niacin. When it’s used as a treatment to increase your HDL cholesterol or correct a niacin deficiency, it’s sold in higher doses that are prescribed by your doctor. The FDA feels it’s not possible to get enough niacin from the food you eat to increase your HDL cholesterol. Some common brand names of prescription niacin include:

  • Niaspan
  • Niacor

Niacin is also available as an over-the-counter (OTC) supplement. However, don’t take niacin — even in the over-the-counter form — without discussing it with your doctor first because niacin can cause side effects when taken in high doses.

What impact does niacin have on cholesterol?

Niacin can raise HDL cholesterol — the “good” cholesterol — by 15 to 35 percent. This makes niacin the most effective drug available for raising HDL cholesterol. While niacin’s effect on HDL is of most interest, it’s worth noting that niacin also decreases your LDL and triglyceride levels. High levels of LDL and triglycerides are significant risk factors for heart disease.

You may have heard that a large study that examined the effect of niacin to raise HDL cholesterol was stopped early. This study examined how niacin worked when used with statin medications for people who have a history of heart disease. The trial was stopped because no difference was seen between people who took prescription-strength niacin and people who took a placebo. The study also found there may be a small increase in the risk of stroke for people who take niacin to increase their HDL cholesterol level. More research is necessary to see how effective niacin might be compared with other heart disease medications. You shouldn’t stop taking niacin unless you get your doctor’s OK. Talk to your doctor if you’re concerned about taking niacin.

What about niacin side effects, like flushing?

Niacin comes in a variety of forms, ranging from fast-acting forms to those that are longer acting. Some forms of niacin, especially in high doses — 1,000 milligrams or more — do cause temporary flushing of the skin.

The flushing can make your skin redden and possibly feel warm to the touch. While annoying, this flushing isn’t harmful. If you have flushing, talk to your doctor about taking an aspirin shortly before you take your niacin. Aspirin can counteract this flushing effect. Also, avoiding hot drinks and alcohol can decrease flushing. Versions of niacin with reduced flushing effects also are available by prescription.

Prescription Niacin: What You Should Know

  • Do not use Niaspan if you have liver disease or if you are taking an immediate-release niacin pill.
  • Do not use Niaspan if you are pregnant or breastfeeding.
  • People who are taking aspirin, high blood pressure medicines, HMG CoA Reductase Inhibitors (“Statins”), or medicines to lower bile acid should talk to their doctor about the risks of taking Niacin (Niaspan).

BASIC LIFESTYLE CHOICES

The American Heart Association’s Nutrition Committee strongly advises that healthy Americans over age 2 limit their intake of trans fat to less than 1 percent of total calories.

http://www.heart.org/HEARTORG/Conditions/Cholesterol/PreventionTreatmentofHighCholesterol/Know-Your-Fats_UCM_305628_Article.jsp

Based on current data, the American Heart Association recommends that consumers follow these tips:

  • Choose a diet rich in fruits, vegetables, whole-grain, high-fiber foods, and fat-free and low-fat dairy most often.
  • Keep total fat intake between 25 and 35 percent of calories, with most fats coming from sources of monounsaturated and polyunsaturated fats such as fish, nuts, seeds and vegetable oils most often.
  • Use naturally occurring, unhydrogenated vegetable oils such as canola, safflower, sunflower or olive oil most often.
  • Look for processed foods made with unhydrogenated oil rather than partially hydrogenated or hydrogenated vegetable oils or saturated fat.
  • Use soft margarine as a substitute for butter, and choose soft margarines (liquid or tub varieties) over harder stick forms. Look for ”0 g trans fat” on the Nutrition Facts label.
  • French fries, doughnuts, cookies, crackers, muffins, pies and cakes are examples of foods that are high in trans fat. Don’t eat them often.
  • Limit the saturated fat in your diet. If you don’t eat a lot of saturated fat, you won’t be consuming a lot of trans fat.
  • Limit commercially fried foods and baked goods made with shortening or partially hydrogenated vegetable oils. Not only are these foods very high in fat, but that fat is also likely to be very hydrogenated, meaning a lot of trans fat.
  • Limited fried fast food. Commercial shortening and deep-frying fats will continue to be made by hydrogenation and will contain saturated fat and trans fat.

Heart healthy fruits and vegetablesHormones that increase with age, such as cortisol can also contribute to many age-related chronic diseases such as high blood pressure, abdominal obesity and blood sugar imbalances. Lowering cortisol levels not only increases immunity but also increases insulin sensitivity and enhances fat metabolism.

One of the most easy-to-understand examples of the detrimental effects of cell membrane brittleness (aging) occurs in the blood vessel walls. As the blood vessels lose their flexibility, the risk of hypertension (high blood pressure) increases, as does the incidence of arteriosclerosis.

Taking measures to reduce stress, exercise, avoiding vitamin and mineral deficiencies with proper supplementation, and enjoying the relaxing effects of aromatherapy can help you get better control of your health.

"There is nothing in a caterpillar that tells you it's going to be a butterfly." ~ R. Buckminster Fuller

Bizarre “Sea Serpent” Captured on Video: in a world first, marine scientists working in the Gulf of Mexico filmed a Giant Oarfish in the wild written by Craig Weatherby, writer at Vital Choice Seafood

A team of researchers recently caught a rare, frightening, but oddly beautiful fish on video … for the first time (view it below). The Giant Oarfish captured on film was estimated to measure a jaw-dropping 16 to 32 feet in length.

The men in the photo at right are holding a dead Oarfish … one that may only be half the size of the one filmed in the Gulf, and just a third of the documented maximum. The biggest members of this bizarre species may be the biggest bony fish in the world. (Sharks have cartilage, not bone.)

It’s likely that some of the “sea serpent” sightings by sailors over the centuries stem from the size, dragon-like dorsal fin, bright red streamers, and sinuous, snake-like motions of the Giant Oarfish (Regalecus glesne).

Oarfish sightings and landings are infrequent, but happen regularly around the world … usually when one was dead or dying, at the surface or washed onshore.

How the “catch” happened

The video (above) was shot in the Gulf of Mexico by scientists from Louisiana State University and the UK’s National Oceanography Centre.

They were based on the world’s largest oil rig, called ThunderHorse, and using its remotely operated vehicle (ROV) when they saw the fish swimming – sometimes backwards – at a depth of more than 1,500 feet (457 meters).

Team leader Mark Benfield, Ph.D., offered this account:

“What was interesting about the fish was its swimming behavior. It moved by undulating its dorsal fin in waves that propelled it backwards at quite a good speed. The fish was really big … five to 10 meters [16 to 32 feet].”

How did we not know that the seas harbor a stunningly beautiful, scary-but-harmless “sea serpent”? Now that we do, we’re glad it exists!

Saving the ocean’s amazing creatures – many still undiscovered – is another good reason to keep greenhouse gasses, trash, and chemical pollution from killing the seas.

And saving the ocean and its food chain is essential to the health, welfare, and very survival of countless people.

What!? Are we now supposed to eat Giant Oarfish for good health???

No… [smiling] it’s just a fascinating news story I wanted to share. That’s something for our brains and hearts in another way.

The fish that are really good for are health (high in omega 3s) can be found at my favorite source for wild seafood, Vital Choice… and an essential oil enhanced supplement called Omega Blue (fact sheet) from Young Living Essential Oils.

"There is nothing in a caterpillar that tells you it's going to be a butterfly." ~ R. Buckminster Fuller

Is that old saying still around? “Fish is brain food.” I recall hearing it when I was little and thought it was cool, at the time I never associated with brain function as we age though, I simply thought that eating fish would make us smarter, apparently it does much more than that!

Well, it turns out that the types of fish high in omega 3s are good for our aging brains and have been linked to reduced rates in Alzheimer’s disease and certain forms of dementia. Even though more studies need to be performed and longer in duration, it’s still nice to know that there are many beneficial effects from fish and omega 3s.

In a study at Quebec’s Laval University the team paid particular attention to DHA: the omega-3 that constitutes a large proportion of the fatty acids in brain cell membranes and is essential to proper brain function.

Along with EPA, brainy DHA is one of the two key omega-3s in human cells, with fish and fish oil being the only substantial food sources.

The Canadians wrote, experimental studies show that rodents bred to develop Alzheimer’s-like conditions easily are more likely to do so when their bodies are deficient in DHA.

Likewise, most lab studies show when rodents are fed more DHA they acquire fewer, milder signs and symptoms of Alzheimer’s, and get them more slowly. And, people who report eating diets high in DHA – from fish and/or fish oil – are less likely to develop Alzheimer’s disease and other forms of senility (Calon F, Cole G 2007).

The Quebecois cited these facts in explaining their conclusion: “… the knowledge gathered in recent years holds out a hope for prevention and suggests that the elderly and people bearing a genetic risk for Alzheimer’s disease should at least avoid DHA deficiency.” (Calon F, Cole G)

Results of the few, mostly small and short-term clinical studies done to date do not show that fish or supplemental omega-3s improve behavior or test scores in Alzheimer’s or ARCD patients, once senility progresses past its earlier, milder stages.

The Canadians’ encouraging words echo ones from a Swedish team’s 2006 report on a clinical trial that showed reduced agitation among some Alzheimer’s patients who took omega-3 fish oil:

“Combined data from … epidemiologic [population-and-diet] studies point to preventive effects from long-term fish intake. Those results and the results from the present study support the idea that omega-3 fatty acids have a role in primary prevention of Alzheimer’s disease …” (Freund-Levi Y et al. 2006)

Australian scientists discovered at least one possible reason for omega 3s protective powers. Researchers at Melbourne’s Deakin University found that DHA – one of the two key omega-3s in fish fat – regulates the levels of zinc in brain cells (Suphioglu C et al. 2010).

Margaret Ackland, Ph.D., leads a group that studies the function of trace metals in human health, and identifies “molecular transporters” that control the movement of zinc and copper into and out of cells.

Professor Ackland and her colleagues set out to study the relationship – if any – between omega-3 DHA and zinc in the neurons (nerve cells) responsible for transmitting signals in the brain.

Ackland, told the Australian Associated Press, “We found that when the level of DHA in neuronal cells drops, the level of zinc rises. The higher levels of zinc can be toxic, resulting in cell death … a key feature of … Alzheimer’s.” (Rose D 2010)

She went on to make a key observation: “We believe that having omega-3 fatty acids in the diet helps keep the levels of zinc in the brain in balance and helps prevent the increase in levels that triggers cell death.” (Rose D 2010)

Science has known for some time that DHA is essential for healthy brain function, but they didn’t know, until Professor Auckland’s study strongly demonstrated that there was a link to zinc.

Auckland stated, “To the best of our knowledge this is the first time a direct link has been demonstrated between the levels of DHA and zinc in the brain’s neuronal cells. Our work provides insights into how fatty acid nutrition may prevent the development of Alzheimer’s …” (Rose D 2010)

"There is nothing in a caterpillar that tells you it's going to be a butterfly." ~ R. Buckminster Fuller

How many readers here would prefer to prevent depression and the use of antidepressant drugs if they knew  how? There are so many all-natural things we can do that to list them all here would make this an incrediblity long article. So for the time being I’ll cover just a few and a study on omega 3 fish oil, that can easily be incorporated into a healthier lifestyle.

Down in the dumps… practicing these 4 easy steps will make a huge difference…

  1. Get out into the sunshine without sunscreen or sunblock. Do so mindfully, starting out with exposure of 10 to 15 minutes at a time, and slowly build up from there. The natural vitamin D that is FREE from the sun boasts benefits, not fears, one such benefit is prevention of cancer and other common diseases. The vitamin D we get from sun exposure is different than a vitamin D supplement.
  2. Start an organic garden. Aside from sun exposure it has also been shown that having an organic garden is extremely healthy for the body and mind. As a former organic Landscape Designer I can tell you that a garden need not be complicated or expensive, nor does it require any items or products other than seeds, plants, rake, shovel, and a good air a garden clippers. As I write more articles on gardening smart I’ll add links here.
  3. Eat Locally grown produce! This alone is an awesome experience. You’re eating more seasonal foods, fresh foods, and you meet local farmers and make new friends in your community.  omega-blue-supplement-fish-oil
  4. Add Omega 3s to your diet. In the form of a high quality Omega 3 supplement, like Young Living’s Omega Blue, and in the form of healthier types of fresh fish (not those frozen battered and boxed things, those are low quality and don’t have much in the way of nutrition). Fresh fish will NOT have a fishy odor and will not stink up your house when you cook it; if that’s been your experience then you know the fish you’ve been buying is old and on it’s way to going bad. This is where I’ve bought all of my fish for the past 5 years. And of course, I get my fish oil, Omega Blue, from Young Living. Omega Blue has therapeuitc-grade essential oils added which acts as a natural preservative and creates a synergistic affect, they’re very good.

Now for the study on Omega 3s and depression. This is an excellent article from my friends at Vital Choice Seafood – they have the absolute best seafood I’ve ever found, I have it shipped in to NC, that’s how good it is.  salmon-fish-cooking-food-omega3

Fish Oil Rivals Antidepressants in Clinical Trial by Craig Weatherby

Clinical findings affirm earlier indications and further justify strong omega-3 support from the American Psychiatric Association

The results of the largest-ever clinical trial found that omega-3 fish oil may significantly benefit half of all people diagnosed with depression.

Specifically, fish oil seemed to help the 50 percent of depression patients who are free from diagnosed anxiety disorders.

Fish oil appeared to help these people about as much as the leading class of antidepressant drugs … that is, selective serotonin re-uptake inhibitors (SSRIs) such as Prozac and Paxil.

Participants for the trial were people diagnosed with moderate to severe unipolar (i.e., not bipolar) major depression who were unable to tolerate antidepressants, who refused them despite a physician’s recommendation, or who were not helped by the drugs.

More than 430 patients with an episode of major depression were assigned to take either with omega-3 EPA from fish oil (1,050mg per day) for two months or an identical-looking placebo pill masked with fish odor.

Fish oil did not perform better than placebo, for the patients diagnosed with anxiety as well as depression. [Here's a study on using essential oils of orange and lavender that has shown to help anxiety].

More than 430 patients with an episode of major depression were assigned to take either with omega-3 EPA from fish oil (1,050mg per day) for two months or an identical-looking placebo pill masked with fish odor.

Omega-3 EPA from fish oil did not perform better than placebo among the patients diagnosed with anxiety as well as depression.

But among those diagnosed with major depression ─ but not anxiety ─ the patients who took omega-3 EPA had significantly better scores than the placebo group.

As lead author Francois Lesperance, M.D., told Medscape Psychiatry. “… the level of improvement we saw in this subgroup is on a par with what has typically been reported with pharmacologic treatments.” (Stein J 2009)

Findings apply to the half of all depression patients not usually studied

These findings are important because they carry implications for about one-half of all depressed patients … those who do not also display anxiety disorders.

And these people are often excluded from placebo-controlled studies of antidepressant drugs.

Dr. Lesperance made a key point: ”Many depressed patients prefer to avoid drug treatment because of the stigma associated with such therapy, not to mention potential treatment-related side effects, and thus it’s nice to be able to offer patients an alternative treatment that is similarly effective but without the risks.” (Stein J 2009)

Most population studies show links between higher levels of omega-3′s and reduced depression risk, and/or link low levels of omega-3′s ─ or an excess of omega-6′s versus omega-3′s ─ to higher levels of depression.

Besides supporting normal mood, research shows that omega-3′s ─ and higher than average omega-3/omega-6 intake ratios ─ likely benefit cardiovascular, brain, bone, and metabolic health.

"There is nothing in a caterpillar that tells you it's going to be a butterfly." ~ R. Buckminster Fuller

stress-man-peopleMost everyone has experienced depression in their lives and sadly there are many that battle with depression daily.  Often anti-depressants are prescribed by our doctors.  They certainly may help, but then one has to worry about the side effects from the medication they are taking.  People sometimes are unable to control their depression on their own and need help their entire lives.  It is so very important to get help for depression. Depression is not what anyone wants to have and when our loved ones are suffering from depression, we feel so bad for them and helpless as to what to do to help.

If someone is able to recognize that they have depression they should try to make some lifestyle changes and give alternative therapies a try before beginning to take a drug that may further hinder their health.  There are so many causes for depression, and trying to figure out the cause can be difficult to discern.  Sometimes seeking counseling is beneficial.  Meeting with a Naturopathic doctor, who may help one to find out that certain foods are not working for them and could be causing unwanted physical and mental problems. These therapies may help one to be able to stay away from anti-depressants, that truly aren’t the cure, yet are really only a band-aide covering up the root of the problem.

To heal our brain we need to fix our body first.

Optimizing nutrition is very important. Now a days a deficiency in Omega 3 fish oil is seen in many, and should be addressed. Lacking in this oil can cause depression, scaly skin and even brittle nails. One excellent source of Omega 3 is with Young Livings Omega Blue.
