"There is nothing in a caterpillar that tells you it's going to be a butterfly." ~ R. Buckminster Fuller

Stress is in everyone’s lives at some point. We search for different ways to help us cope with the stresses of our lives, and when we find a good “fix”, we need to hang on to that “magic”.  If you are still searching for a way to help to get through a stressful situation and you would rather it were a pure, natural, alternative, perhaps you might give therapeutic-grade Onycha essential oil a try.

Onycha has a very nice scent, somewhat like vanilla.  When you diffuse it with either lavender or peppermint, not only does it smell really good, but you may be surprised  to feel your stress level decrease.

Onycha(styrax benzoin) Although onycha is only mentioned in scripture by name once, it holds the high position of being an ingredient of the holy incense (Exodus 30:34). Other names for onycha are “benzoin”, “friar’s balm” and “Java frankincense”. Tincture of benzoin was an antiseptic used in hospitals for more than a hundred years (since the mid 1800s).

Onycha may have been used in hospitals but it does NOT have a hospital smell. It contains vanillin aldehyde, which gives it the pleasant scent of vanilla. Read the rest of this entry »

Women know the feelings of being overwhelmed, out of “sorts”, depressed, trouble staying focused and even issues with skin blemishes.  Does this remind you of “that time of the month?”  It is such a bothersome time that women go through and the lousy part about it is that it comes back each and every month.  The intensity may be different each month, and some months are over the top.

Galbanum may help to ease some of these feelings and is a nice alternative to the physicians suggestions for relief.  Would you be willing to try a natural alternative to see if you could feel relief with some of the womanly monthly feelings?  I know I would.

“And the Lord said unto Moses, take unto thee sweet spices, stacte, an onycha, and galbanum, these sweet spices with pure frankincense of each there shall be a like weight.” Exodus 30: 34

Scriptures: Exodus 30:34-36

Galbanum is mentioned in Egyptian papyri and the Old Testament (Exodus 30:34) it was esteemed for its medicinal and spiritual properties. Dioscorides, an ancient Roman historian, records that galbanum was used for its antispasmodic, diuretic, and pain-relieving properties.

Galbanum is harmonic and balancing, amplifies spiritual awareness and meditation. When combined with frankincense or sandalwood, the frequency rises dramatically.

Have you ever felt like you need a little bit of help with a bad taste in your mouth or maybe concerned that your breath my not be too pleasant to others?  Here is a quick and natural fix to help your breath be fresher is with Cassia essential oil.

Put one drop of Cassia in about 1/4 cup of pure water, gargle, spit out or swallow.  You will then have a clean and fresh taste in your mouth and your breath will be more pleasant to others.

You could also dip the tip of a toothpick in the essential oil. When you put the toothpick in your mouth, just be mindful that it may be a bit warm, but once you get used to this you will be happy to have some on hand.

Cassia has a rich Biblical history. Mentioned in one of the oldest known medical records, Ebers Papyrus (dating from sixteenth century BC) an ancient Egyptian list of 877 prescriptions and recipes.

Psalm 45:8—All thy garments smell of myrrh, and aloes, and cassia, out of the ivory palaces, whereby they have made thee glad.

Cassia (Cinnamomum cassia) comes from a slender, evergreen tree, which grows up, to 20 feet tall. It is native to China. The oil is steam distilled from the bark. Cassia was an ingredient in the Holy Anointing Oil given to Moses. This exotic fragrance of vanilla/cinnamon might be similar in its aroma to cinnamon, but it is physically and chemically much different and three times more potent than cinnamon. Care must be taken in topical use as it may cause skin sensation.

Cassia is one of four essential oils that are the ingredients in Moses’ Holy Anointing Oil. Holy Anointing Oil, was considered to bring about healing. Anoint translated from the Hebrew and Greek meant “to cover, rub, or smear the head or body (or object) with oil”. In some cases, the word meant “to pour oil over the head or body (or object).” A commonly used Hebrew word for anoint was “masach”. It is interesting that the Hebrew variations of the word for anoint are similar to the English word “massage” both in meaning and in pronunciation. Laying of hands in a loving manner and with prayer.

Exodus 30:23,24,25—Take thou also unto thee principal spices, of pure myrrh five hundred shekels, and of sweet cinnamon half so much, even two hundred and fifty shekels, and of sweet calamus two hundred and fifty shekels, And of cassia five hundred shekels, after the shekel of the sanctuary, and of oil olive an hin: And thou shalt make it an oil of holy ointment, an ointment compound after the art of the apothecary: it shall be an holy anointing oil.

One way of “anointing” oils that may be helpful in alleviating ailments is:

1. Begin on the crown of the head.

2. Applying to the bottoms of the feet on the Vitaflex point that reflects the ailment.

3. Apply to the back, over the lung area, for a congestive ailment.

4. Apply to the chest, for a congestive ailment.

Source: Bark of the tree

Ancient Uses: Ingredient in Moses’ Holy Anointing Oil.

Modern Uses: Immune system builder and supportive of the body’s natural defenses.

Medical Properties: Anti-inflammatory (COX2 inhibitor), anti-fungal, antibacterial, antiviral, anticoagulant, immune system builder and supportive of the body’s natural defenses.*

Uses: Cataracts, fungal infections (ringworm, candida), atherosclerosis, arteriosclerosis.*

Other uses of Cassia are:

  • Put a drop or two on your fingers and rub through the hair. Perfumed hair is good anytime, especially at night.
  • Diffuse or put a drop in your hand, rub hands together and cup over nose, gently inhale for a joyful, uplifting feeling.* (Be mindful to not touch your face with your hands, just cup your hands about an inch away from you nose and face.)
  • Add a drop to water, swish in mouth, and gargle for a delicious and effective mouthwash.
  • Put a drop in a glass of water and shake it up (to disperse the oil) for a protecting & refreshing drink. You may just find it curbs your desire for sugar! Also taking it internally may help with fungal problems! (Glass containers only!!)
  • Use it in cooking. For example, add a drop or two to yams.
  • Add a drop to hot chocolate and enjoy!
  • Add a drop or two to hot water, stir, and drink to take away the chill.
  • Dilute 50/50 and apply to area of concern and Vitaflex foot points to help with boils, ringworm, and fungal infections.*
  • Combine with carrier oil and other oils such as Frankincense, Sandalwood, Myrrh, Hyssop, or Galbanum and wear as fragrance or put it on a handkerchief and carry with you or take to bed at night.

Purchase Cassia in the 12 Oils of Ancient Scripture Kit

NOTE: While its aroma is similar to cinnamon, cassia is chemically and physically quite different. May irritate the nasal membranes if inhaled directly from diffuser or bottle.

Note: Not all essential oils are the same. Therapeutic-grade essential oils are steam distilled and wild crafted, their oils are carefully extracted by way of hot water and steam and they are free from any synthetic chemicals. Many labels use the words “For External Use Only,” which means that they might include chemicals other than pure oil.

During the winter months we all may feel a change in our skin, feeling dryness and even wrinkles becoming more pronounced.  Sandalwood essential oil is a very gentle essential oil and may be applied directly on the skin and may help to soften and moisturize the skin. Plus the scent is very pleasing and may also be beneficial for calming stressed nerves.

“Like valleys that stretch out, Like gardens beside the river, Like aloes planted by the Lord, Like cedars beside the water.” (Numbers 24:6)

Sandalwood is one of the more gentle essential oils of the Biblical oils.    Sandalwood enhances deep sleep, may help remove negative programming from the cells. It is high in Sesquiterpenes that stimulate the pineal gland and the limbic region of the brain, the center of emotions.*  The pineal gland is responsible for releasing melatonin, a powerful immune stimulant and anti-tumoral agent.

Sesquiterpenes, predominant in Vetiver, cedarwood, and sandalwood, are soothing to inflamed tissue and can also produce profound effects on emotions and hormonal balance.*

ALOES/SANDALWOOD (Santalum album) is the most valuable tree in the world. It takes 10 years for the sandalwood tree to form hardwood. Peak hardwood formation is achieved when the tree is between 40-60 years. King Tut’s tomb was filled with alabaster jars of aloewood/sandalwood oil which thieves later stole, leaving the alabaster jars behind. Sandalwood contains 90 % sesquiterpenes which deprogram misinformation and carry oxygen to the cellular level.

“And there came also Nicodemus, which at the first came to Jesus by night, and brought a mixture of myrrh and aloes, about an hundred pound weight.” (John 19:39)

Source:  From branches

Ancient Uses: Elevating moods, perfume

Bible oils have been being used since biblical times and thankfully they are returning to the “mainstream” and are becoming more familiar to many.  Myrrh is an amazing essential oil that God has blessed us with.

Myrrh is mentioned in one of the oldest known medical records, Ebers Papyrus (dating from sixteenth century BC) an ancient Egyptian list of 877 prescriptions and recipes. The Arabian people used myrrh for many skin conditions, such as chapped and cracked skin and wrinkles. It was listed in Hildegard’s Medicine, a compilation of early German medicines by highly-regarded Benedictine herbalist Hildegard of Bingen (1098-1179).

Myrrh promotes spiritual awareness and is uplifting. It contains Sesquiterpenes which stimulate the limbic system of the brain (the center of memory and emotions) and the hypothalamus, pineal and pituitary glands. The hypothalamus is the master gland of the human body, producing many vital hormones including thyroid and growth hormone.

Song Of Solomon 3:6—”Who [is] this that cometh out of the wilderness like pillars of smoke, perfumed with myrrh and frankincense, with all powders of the merchant?”

Song Of Solomon 4:6—“Until the day break and the shadows flee away, I will get me to the mountain of myrrh, and to the hill of frankincense.”

Scriptures: Genesis 37:25; 43:11; Exodus 30:23; Esther 2:12; Psalms 45:8; Proverbs 7:17 (Also in Exodus 30:34 as “Stacte”); Song Solomon 1:13; 3:6; 4:6, 14: 5:1, 5, 13; Matthew 2:11; 26:7, 9, 12; Mark 14:3, 4, 15:23; Luke 7:37, 38 46; 23:56; John 11:2; 12:3, 5; 19:39

Myrrh is mentioned in the Bible 18 times. When Esther was being prepared to be the bride of the King, she received a daily anointing of oil of myrrh for six months. (Esther 2:12). Of course, that’s not what most Christians think of when they think of myrrh. They think of the gifts of the wise men. (Matthew 2:11)

Myrrh was an oil customarily applied to the umbilical cord of newborn babies. It’s antimicrobial action offered as a protection from infection. The wise men would not have had to explain this to Mary and Joseph. It was common knowledge at that time. They would not have had to explain to Mary that the gift was also for her. Childbearing women of that time knew that if they applied myrrh to their tummies following labor that it would eventually remove stretch marks.

In fact, in ancient times, for those who could afford it, oil of myrrh was inhaled and applied daily to the skin throughout pregnancy and was diffused during labor as its aromas induce a sense of peace and well-being.

Myrrh, like frankincense, is a universal oil, offering benefits for numerous complaints and conditions. Indicated for bronchitis, dysentery, hyperthyroidism, oral and vaginal thrush, ulcers, and viral hepatitis, it has also been found to benefit asthma, athlete’s foot, coughs, eczema, gingivitis, gum infections, hemorrhoids, mouth ulcers, ringworm, wounds, wrinkles, and chapped or cracked skin. It is widely used today in oral hygiene products.*

Myrrh is what is known as “a fixing oil.” It extends the therapeutic action of any other oil with which it is combined. Biblical people knew this and included myrrh as a significant portion of all of their ointments. In fact, myrrh was such a universally common ingredient of healing ointments at the time of Christ that the Greek word for “ointment” (muron) and the Greek word for “myrrh” (muron) were the same. Thus, when Jesus was anointed with the precious ointment (muron) of spikenard (Matthew 26:1; Mark 14:1-9; Luke 7:36-50; John 11:1-2, 12:1-8) he was also being anointed with myrrh.

Order Myrrh Here

Myrrh has a very gentle scent and its fixing property is highly prized by perfumers. When combined with other oils, it makes the scent of those oils last longer without masking them. Some of the most delightful fragrances are also short-lived, evaporating rapidly. When one wears perfume or cologne, they want it to last for a whole evening or a day, and not be gone in minutes. Perfumers find myrrh to be the perfect “fixing oil” to extend more volatile fragrances. Modern feminine perfumes containing myrrh include: Fidji® (Laroche), Givenchy III® (Givenchy), Alliage® (Estee Lauder), Ravissa® (Maurer & Wirtz), and LeSport® (St. Laurent)—which also contains Sandalwood (aloes), another Biblical oil.

Myrrh (commiphora myrrha) has one of the highest levels of sesquiterpenes, a class of compounds that has direct effects on the hypothalamus, pituitary and amygdala, the seat of our emotions. Research in Italy demonstrated that myrrh has pain-relieving properties as well, which is probably why it was administered to Jesus prior to his crucifixion.

Myrrh (Commipihora myrrha) has a rich, smoky, balsamic aroma that is purifying, restorative, revitalizing, and uplifting. It is a helpful aid to meditation, having one of the highest levels of sesquiterpenes available. Sesquiterpenes are a class of compounds that have a direct effect on the hypothalamus, pituitary, and amygdala, the seat of our emotions.  The Arabian people believed it helped wrinkled, chapped, and cracked skin. Today, myrrh is widely used in oral hygiene products.*

Source: Oleo-gum-resin from trunks and limbs of the tree.

Medical properties: Powerful antioxidant, anti-tumoral, anti-inflammatory, antiviral, anti-parasitic, analgesic/anesthetic.

Applications: topically, orally

  • Drop 2-3 drops on a dried log and allow time for oil to soak in before putting the the fire.
  • One drop of myrrh oil on your canker sores may help them to disappear.*
  • Rubbing 1-2 drops on your gum’s may help heal gingivitis.*
  • Mix 2 to 5 drops in water for a excellent mouthwash.*

If you are a reader of the Bible, you know that essential oils are mentioned many times throughout.  The Bible has more than 500 references to at least 33 species of essential oils and/or the herbs from which they are distilled.  All of the oils used by the people of Bible times are still used today, although not always for the same purposes.

FRANKINCENSE

Is mentioned in the Bible 22 times, the most familiar of which is regarding the gifts to the baby Jesus from the wise men. Mary and Joseph would have known, without any explanation from the wise men that it was customary to anoint newborn sons of kings and priests with the oil of frankincense, which they no doubt did for their newborn child.

Also known as “olibanum,” or “Oil from Lebanon” the name frankincense is derived from the Medieval French word for “real incense.” Frankincense is considered the “holy anointing oil” in the Middle East and has been used in religious ceremonies for thousands of years. It was well known during the time of Christ for its anointing and healing powers and was one of the gifts given to Christ at His birth.

“Used to treat every conceivable ill known to man,” frankincense was valued more than gold during ancient times, and only those with great wealth and abundance possessed it. It is mentioned in one of the oldest known medical records, Ebers Papyrus (dating from sixteenth century BC) an ancient Egyptian list of 877 prescriptions and recipes.

Matthew 2:11—“And when they were come into the house, they saw the young child with Mary his mother, and fell down, and worshiped him: and when they had opened their treasures, they presented unto him gifts; gold, and frankincense, and myrrh.”

Scriptures: Exodus 30:34,; Leviticus 2:1, 1, 15, 16: 5:11; 6:15; 24:7, Numbers 5:15; 16:46-50 (Arron stops a plague); 1 Chronicles 9:29; Nehemiah 13:5, 9; Song of Solomon 3:6; 4:6, 14; Isaiah 59:20; 60:3, 6 (These verses from Isaiah prophesy the gifts of the wise men) Isaiah 66:3; Jeremiah 6:20; 17:26; 41:5 (NOTE: these six references from Isaiah and Jeremiah, are translated as “incense” in the King James Version.  However, the Hebrew in all cases is “lebonah: which is frankincense.  Matthew 2:11 (Three wise men’s visit) Revelations 18:13

Frankincense was considered a cure-all by the people of Biblical times and for those who could afford it, it was applied to cuts, bruises, and wounds of all kinds, as well as a inhaled and taken internally. Frankincense comes from a tree requiring a very unique desert climate. It grows only in North Africa and the Southern Arabian peninsula. The oil received by Jesus as a baby came from the same areas where Young Living gets it’s Frankincense today.

Not only was frankincense used as a holy anointing oil, it was also one of the ingredients in the holy incense of the Hebrews (Exodus 30:34-37) burned perpetually in their tabernacles for more than a thousand years, through the time of Christ. Today one can still experience the fragrance of Frankincense in Catholic Churches where it has been customarily diffused for more than 2000 years.

While it has been used to treat every conceivable ill known to man for thousands of years, modern experience has shown that the fragrance of frankincense is an antidepressant and helps in overcoming stress and despair, as well as supporting the immune system. It has also been found helpful with allergies, insect and snake bites, bronchitis, cancer, pneumonia, diphtheria, headaches, hemorrhaging, high blood pressure, typhoid, and warts.

Frankincense has always been a popular fragrance for perfumes and lotions, from ancient times to the present. In fact, it is found in several modern products, including Youth Dew® (Estee Lauder) and the all-time best-selling after-shave lotion, Old Spice® (Shulton).

Egyptian tradition says that “Frankincense is good for everything from gout to a broken head” or in other words “good from head to toe”.  If in doubt, use Frankincense.

Wood from Frankincense and Myrrh was burned by tribes for warmth and cooking. They received benefits of oil vapors through the smoke and were blessed with the healing power of the vapors.
