Heart healthy fruits and vegetablesHormones that increase with age, such as cortisol can also contribute to many age-related chronic diseases such as high blood pressure, abdominal obesity and blood sugar imbalances. Lowering cortisol levels not only increases immunity but also increases insulin sensitivity and enhances fat metabolism.

One of the most easy-to-understand examples of the detrimental effects of cell membrane brittleness (aging) occurs in the blood vessel walls. As the blood vessels lose their flexibility, the risk of hypertension (high blood pressure) increases, as does the incidence of arteriosclerosis.

Taking measures to reduce stress, exercise, avoiding vitamin and mineral deficiencies with proper supplementation, and enjoying the relaxing effects of aromatherapy can help you get better control of your health.

"There is nothing in a caterpillar that tells you it's going to be a butterfly." ~ R. Buckminster Fuller

In a study it was found that seniors who consumed a higher level of dietary protein are less likely to suffer hip fractures than seniors whose daily dietary protein intake is less, according to the Institute for Aging Research of Hebrew SeniorLife in Boston, an affiliate of Harvard Medical School.

The study, which examined the daily protein intake of 946 seniors from the Framingham Osteoporosis Study, found that individuals who were in the lowest 25 percent of dietary protein intake had approximately 50 percent more hip fractures than those who consumed greater amounts of dietary protein (all within normal intakes). Those who suffered hip fractures consumed less than the 46 grams of dietary protein per day recommended for adults.

The study, which was funded in part by the National Institute of Arthritis and Musculoskeletal and Skin Diseases, builds on previous studies that included mostly women and reported a relationship between greater dietary protein intake and decreased risk of hip fracture.

However, other studies have shown the opposite and there is a reason for this [be sure to see below - Why some studies show increased protein increases urinary calcium loss]. Read the rest of this entry »

Companies, in my opinion, can produce some very questionable ad campaigns. Most recently, the commercial on high-fructose corn syrup and making the person who says “high-fructose corn syrup, haven’t you heard…” look like an uninformed person, while the supposed informed person touts that high fructose corn syrup is all natural and comes from corn. The fact is, while it has come from corn it is not natural and not ok to consume in moderation (which simply means it will take a little bit longer for you to suffer the negative health consequences. For those who are interested in knowing ‘why’ high fructose corn syrup is bad for your health here 20 answers out of many others…

20 High-Fructose Corn Syrup Facts:

  1. Increases our risk of obesity, diabetes, hypertension, and atherosclerosis.
  2. Almost always comes from GM corn. If you’re uncertain as to why GM crops should be avoided like the plaque watch this movie (free to watch online on Hulu) “The Future of Food.”
  3. It is so ubiquitous in processed foods and so over-consumed by the average American that many experts believe our nation faces the prospect of an epidemic of metabolic disease in the future.
  4. Is much less expensive than cane sugar, making it a preferred choice of companies who are more interested in price point and profits, rather than the health of the consumer. Read the rest of this entry »

"There is nothing in a caterpillar that tells you it's going to be a butterfly." ~ R. Buckminster Fuller

Fungi and yeast feed on decomposing or dead tissues. They exist everywhere: inside our stomachs, on our skin, sometimes in our homes, and out on the lawn. When kept under control, the yeast and fungi populating our bodies are harmless and our bodies digest what they cannot or do not use.

When we feed these naturally-occurring fungi in our bodies too many acid-ash foods (such as: sugar, animal proteins, and dairy products), the fungal populations grow out of control. This condition is known as systemic candidiasis and is marked by fungi invading the blood, gastrointestinal tract, and tissues.

Fungal cultures such as candida excrete large amounts of poisons called mycotoxins as part of their life cycles. These poisons must be detoxified by the liver and immune systems. Such an unnecessary burden eventually these mycotoxins wreak enormous damage on the tissues and organs and are believed to be an aggravating factor in many degenerative diseases, such as cancer, arteriosclerosis, and diabetes.

Insufficient intake of minerals and trace minerals like magnesium, potassium, and zinc may also stimulate candida and fungal overgrowth in the body.

thieves-plaque-toothpasteThis article was contributed by Shayla.

There’s good news and bad news; the bad news is according to the Clinical Toxicology of Commercial Products, fluoride is in fact more poisonous than lead. But here’s the good news; it is just slightly less poisonous than arsenic! What a relief, huh? Apparently, fluoride is a cumulative poison.  This means it  accumulates in the body over the years, specifically in the bones. The Physicians Desk Reference states that in hypersensitive individuals, fluorides can cause skin eruptions like atopic dermatitis, eczema, or urticaria and people have reported gastric distress, headaches, and weakness from it, all of which go away quickly after discontinuation of the fluoride.

I used to work at an upscale health food store in Washington State and there was a man who often came in for toothpaste (fluoride free of course). One day he and his wife shared their story with me. Apparently,  his dentist told him to stop using fluoride toothpaste because his teeth were cracking. The dentist told him this was due to the fluoride, it had apparently made his teeth so hard that they became brittle. Studies by the Journal of the American Medical Association and the New England Journal of Medicine may give a little light as to how this would happen. The Journal of the American Medical Association published three separate articles from From 1990 to 1992, and in these articles fluoride was linked to increased hip fracture rates. In March 22, 1990 an issue of the New England Journal of Medicine, wrote on how Mayo Clinic researchers were finding that fluoride treatment of osteoporosis increased hip fracture rates and bone fragility.

The following quote comes from The Dangers of Flouride and Fluoridation by Michael Schachter M.D., F.A.C.A.M.

“A study by Procter and Gamble showed that as little as half the amount of fluoride used to fluoridate public water supplies resulted in a sizable and significant increase in genetic damage. Epidemiologic research in the mid-1970′s by the late Dr. Dean Burk, head of the cytochemistry division of the National Cancer Institute, indicated that 10,000 or more fluoridation-linked cancer deaths occur yearly in the United States. In 1989, the ability of fluoride to transform normal cells into cancer cells was confirmed by Argonne National Laboratories. Results released in 1989 of studies carried out at the prestigious Batelle Research Institute showed that fluoride was linked to a rare form of liver cancer in mice, oral tumors and cancers in rats, and bone cancer in male rats. Since 1991, the New Jersey Department of Health found that the incidence of osteosarcoma, a type of bone cancer, was far higher in young men exposed to fluoridated water as compared to those who were not.

In addition to the well documented toxic effects of fluoride, fluoride even at dosages of 1 part per million, found in artificially fluoridated water, can inhibit enzyme systems, damage the immune system, contribute to calcification of soft tissues, worsen arthritis and, of course, cause dental fluorosis in children.”

I can testify first hand that as far as preventing cavities,  fluoride is not all it is cracked up to be. I know this because my baby teeth were not that great, I had a couple cavities, even though my teeth were brushed with fluoride toothpaste and I drank fluoridated water. When I was around 5 or 6, my family stopped using fluoride toothpaste and drinking fluoridated water because my parents came across an article that explained fluoride  to be a poison, saying that the kind put in water and toothpaste is a hazardous waste by-product that comes from the production of aluminum. The article explained that it was illegal to dump into the environment so it was put into water and toothpaste instead (I did not get that from Conspiracy Theory, by the way- you can read more about this here). You may or may not believe this, but my adult teeth have never had a cavity.

Here’s the real kicker; although I have never had a cavity, when I was in my early twenties my diet was less then ideal as I was working a job that made healthy meals not so easy to come by, and one of my back teeth started hurting. A visit to the dentist revealed just one of my teeth beginning to get a cavity. They wanted to drill it and fill it in, but I declined. I went home and started taking large doses of herbs such as Bamboo and Horsetail. These herbs have been reported to help heal bones (including teeth) as they are high in organic silica, a nutrient needed for stronger bones and so the body can use the calcium it is given. One could take plain silica, however reports of faster benefits come with the herbs. I also started brushing a lot more often.

In short time, the pain left, and a couple years ago I went to the dentist again and the hole that was wearing was GONE (apparently this does happen sometimes according to the dentist’s assistant-although they have no idea why)! On top of this, aside from being a little crooked, the dentist said my teeth looked so good that I should be able to keep them my whole life, and he finished with “just keep using that fluoride toothpaste”! I just smiled at him! Having good teeth is truly a miracle coming from the parents I come from. Mom didn’t have great teeth, nor did my dad, neither did dad’s parents. My dad in fact has had to have most of his teeth removed and he is only in his early 50′s.

My secret? I don’t use fluoride toothpaste! Nor do I drink fluoridated water. I do, however, have a few healthy practices that may be beneficial to you too. Among these practices are I supplement with magnesium and calcium products (like CalMag from Young Living) and every now and then  Bamboo and Horsetail.  My favorite toothpaste and mouthwash in the world which I have used for the past three years is Young Livings Dentarome Ultra and Thieves Time Release Mouthwash. The toothpaste is sodium lauryl sulfate free, non toxic, and edible (big plus for children as opposed to regular toothpaste which you are supposed to the call poison control center over if they ingest it)! In addition to this, both these products contain an essential oil blend which has been clinically tested to kill specific bacterias and viruses (i.e. it may dramatically help control bad breath and even morning breath). By the way, it tastes wonderful!
