Back Pain

You are currently browsing the archive for the Back Pain category.

It’s only Wednesday, but your body feels like it’s Friday night, 10pm.  You’re exhausted, and everything you own hurts, from your 10 little piggies to the top of your head.  You’re  balancing your checkbook in your head, figuring out the food shopping list, and dreading the weekend cleaning and chores.  As you slip into bed, wondering if you can shut your brain off long enough to get a few hours of sleep, you realize your feet really do hurt, your back is quite sore, and your neck and shoulders are stiff as a board, holding all of your tension.  Great, now what do you do?

A full body massage would be heavenly, but it’s 10pm, so that’s not happening.  Well, if you enjoy the benefits of Young Living essential Oils, you’ve most likely got a case full of oils sitting at the ready.  Now what do you do?   A foot or hand massage is a quick,  fantastic idea, and, if you’ve got a partner or child old enough, they can give you a back, neck, head, hand or foot massage.  But, which essential oils are the best essential oils for your foot or hand massage?

My personal favorite is a foot massage, every time.  We take our feet for granted, they get us where we need to go, and then we promptly forget about them.  We carry a lot of stress in our feet, but really,  very few of us pay them any attention at all.   I can promise you, if you get a foot massage, it feels so good that it can and will relax our whole body, and you’ll want one every day.  When I’m alone, I use a tennis ball or my nubbed hand held back massager to do my feet.  Read the rest of this entry »

Hi Everyone.  This is part 2 of my article.  It is meant to inform you about how the medical community thinks about pain, and why your doctor may have told you not to worry in the past.

Learning to treat pain effectively takes doctors years, if at all.  Doctors who specialize in PM&R (pain management and relief), are formally called physiatrists or sometimes informally as pain doctors.

One of the first things any doctor should learn is when to worry about pain, and I want you to know when to worry about it as well.   Since the medical community is taught to treat so many different kinds of pain, they need to know when to sound an alarm about a patient’s condition and how to act to treat them most effectively, giving them the most relief from their pain possible. If you’ve been experiencing pain, it’s important that you learn to think like a pain doctor. While these “rules” about when to worry certainly do not cover every person and every situation, (every person and situation is different, and YOU and only YOU know what is normal for your body),  they are important to know to get to the source of your problem.

How to Think Like the Medical Community and your Doctor:
1. Two-Week Rule

Any pain that lasts for more than two weeks should be checked out, period, end of sentence. A lot of people think that new pain without an acute injury, or fall, means that they have cancer. In fact, most, but of course not all,  new pain is due to bones, joints, ligaments, tendons, nerves and other musculoskeletal structures.  Many doctors use the two-week rule because a lot of musculoskeletal pain will resolve within a two-week period. Additionally,  a two-week delay in a true medical  diagnosis is very unlikely to change someone’s prognosis if the pain is in fact due to cancer. Though the two-week rule applies to most pain, there are times when doctors ignore this rule and become immediately concerned, as you will see below.

2. Acute-Trauma Rule
Doctors should immediately check all pain associated with acute trauma, such as a car accident or fall off a ladder, most other falls or injuries occured by being struck by something, or a traumatic fall of any kind.   Usually, people aren’t overly worried that cancer is causing this pain if they have trauma that results in immediate or even slightly delayed pain.  However, all severe pain associated with trauma should get an evaluation; this includes a physical examination by a doctor and potentially xrays or MRI’s to rule out a fracture.

3. Worst Pain of My Life Rule
Doctors should be alarmed at all  new and severe pain that a patient reports that is not related to any acute injury or fall.  It’s not unusual for you to actually say, “This is the worst pain I’ve ever experienced!”  Often, the “worst pain of my life” is not cancer, but may be the result of something else equally serious, such as a heart attack, dislocated joint,  appendicitis or ruptured blood vessel (aneurysm). If the pain is severe but chronic and you have sought your doctors help in acurately diagnosing it, , then the “alarm bells” are not as “alarming”.

4. I Can’t Sleep Rule

Doctors should be concerned about any pain that awakens a you out of a sound sleep at night. Sometimes, night pain is more serious than pain that occurs during the day with normal activities, where you are using the part of your body that is currently or recently been injured. This is because, typically, when you rest, pain gets better. Pain that doesn’t improve with rest is sometimes a reason to seek a diagnosis.  However, resting too much with chronic pain will most usually lead to weakness and more pain .  Continuous bedrest is rarely ordered by your doctor.   We do it to ourselves because initially, that’s the only time we don’t hurt.  If you do in fact have chronic pain, try to alternate rest with activity to stay strong and keep your overall pain levels down. Cancer pain is one type of pain that often usually improve with rest and typically will awaken you at night. However, it’s important to know that a lot if not most of musculoskeletal pain problems will bother patients at night. Hip bursitis or shoulder tendinitis can often keep a you awake if you  lie on the affected side and put pressure on the injured part of the body. It’s important not to make assumptions about what is causing night or bedtime sleep pain, and to find out the cause by seeking a medical diagnosis so that you can treat it correctly.
There is absolutely no doubt in my mind that pain is misunderstood, undertreated and that doctors and patients need to work together better to find solutions. I personally turned to Young Living Essential Oils because my pain was not being mahaged at an acceptable level or in an acceptable way.  When someone tells you, “I’ve tried everything,” I often ask if they have seen a  doctort. If the answer is yes, and they are reasonably certain you have a correct diagnosis, exploring the use of Young Living Essential Oils to assist you in managing these daily issues may be the correct solution.  There are no addictive side effects, no systemic side effects, it’s safe to use them and drive a car and operate heavy machinery, and will most likely help you sleep better in the process!

Aside from working on the physical aspect of your aches and pains, the oils will also assist you in emotional balancing and relieving depression so often caused by the chronic pain those of us have.

I think it’s fair to say almost every single one of us has been told over the course of their lifetime, that something that ailed them was “inflammation:.  But has anyone ever explained the process of inflammation?  Most likely the answer is no.

They are many medications on the market, like Celebrex, naprosyn, and ones like Vioxx which have been pulled from the market due to sudden cardiac death and strokes.  I personally took Celebrex and Vioxx in the past.  ALL prescriptions on the market for inflammation come with these same side effects, even if you don’t hear about it often anymore.  ALL OF THEM.

Young Living Therapeutic Grade Essential Oils DO NOT come with any of those side effects, and used properly, there is no risk of stroke or heart attack.

I suffer (suffered) from pain on a constant, chronic daily basis.  I have 2 types of arthritis, systemic Lupus, Fibromyalgia, and many, many other illnesses, as well as a fused cervical spine and titanium shoulder.  Taking 8 Vicodin a day did not do much to alleviate the pain.  Many days I was in tears because I couldn’t get away from the pain.  Then, there was the “acute” pain surprises on top of the chronic pain.  One second my knee would be fine, the next second it would feel like someone was stabbing me in the knee.  Some days, if it happened while I was driving the car, I would literally need to pull over because I was incapable of driving.  After years of taking these anti inflammatory medications, which, by the way, did work to a minimal extent, I was introduced to Young Living Essential Oils, my savior!

I turned to my Young Living essential oils.  I researched and experimented, and finally came up with a topically applied synergistic blend of 26 Young Living Essential Oils that I’m calling “Happy Cells”.  (see why below).  When it is applied, by the drop, to an acute or chronic area of pain, the pain is literally gone in less then 5 minutes at the most, more often within the minute. There are times the pain is gone within seconds.

I have tested this blend on neuropathy pain, acute injury pain, chronic old injury pain, arthritic pain, pulled and strained muscles and joints, diabetic neuropathy, and Fibromyalgia pain.  It has worked immediately and completely on every single one.  The only time it did not relieve the pain 100% was on my broken collarbone.  To be honest, it relieved the pain by about 65%, however, I was continuing to use my arm and shoulder, it was NOT in a sling and swath, as I was concerned about getting a frozen shoulder again.  So, in reality, if I had babied my arm and put it in a sling, I suspect my pain would’ve been completely relieved.

Although this blend may seem expensive, it is used by the drop, not by the ounce.  I use 1-2 drops per area of pain, that’s it.  So, in reality, the bottle will last a long time, it’s organic, chemical free, and, most importantly, IT WORKS!  In reality you would be spending much more on the chemical laden products currently on the market that, on a good day, might relieve your pain by 50% at best for a very short period of time. Additionally, it has NO EXPIRATION DATE!  It will be as potent 5 years from now as it is today.  Also, you can not overdose on my topically applied product, as you can with some others.  Documented deaths have been occurring since 2007 from BenGay http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2007/06/15/AR2007061500676.html,  and other over the counter topical pain relievers:  Please feel free to do your own research on deaths and Ben Gay, deaths and sports creams, etc.

You will NOT experience ANY of these symptoms or problems with my product.  It is 100% pure, organic unadulterated Therapeutic Grade Essential oils, for topical application only.  If you have sensitive skin, I would then suggest trying 1 drop to see if your skin will react, and if it does, cut it with V6 or Olive Oil.

My formula should relieve pain 100% of the time on ALL types of pain. It works for a minimum of 4 hours, possibly all day, depending on the reason for the pain and if you’re still actively using that area (like me and my collarbone).

My blend was created after countless hours of research and trial and error, looking for oils that “potentiate” (boost) each other, so that the whole is more then its parts.

It’s applied topically, is safe for use on children and pets.  I used it on my dog’s dislocated hip, my daughter’s multiple fractures, a friend’s diabetic peripheral neuropathy in his feet, my mom’s acute and chronic knee, a friend’s cancer bone pain, and ALL of my multiple acute and chronic injuries and illness pain.

I use a blend of 26 Young Living Organic Therapeutic Grade Essential Oils, that’s it.  No chemicals, no baby oil, no “gel”, no petroleum jelly, no other cancer causing toxic ingredients like other topical pain products on the market.  There are NO filler products at all.  You are getting 100% pure organic essential oils, and nothing else.  You can, if you choose, dilute this with a few drops of a carrier oil to extend your product, or you can ask me to do it for you.  However, please remember that pure essential oils have NO expiration date, and anything you use to fill the product will have an expiration date.

I look forward to assisting you in becoming pain free, and living your life to the fullest in an organic natural toxic chemical free essential oil way!

Understanding Inflammation:  Inflammation is an immune cellular defense process of what happens to any part of your body that is either acutely injured (a fall), or chronic (tennis elbow, carpel tunnel), or from an autoimmune disease (System Lupus, MS, etc.), or infection.

Inflammation is characterized by any number of symptoms, including:

  • Redness
  • Swollen joint that is warm to touch (not always warm)
  • Joint pain
  • Joint stiffness
  • Loss of joint function
  • Area of swelling along the bone or muscle
  • Pain is not always present

Inflammation MAY also be associated with general “flu-like” symptoms including:

  • Fever
  • Chills
  • Fatigue/loss of energy
  • Headaches
  • Loss of appetite
  • Muscle stiffness

These flu like symptoms are most often seen when there is an underlying chronic inflammatory process due to an auto-immune disease, not from an acute injury.

What causes the symptoms of inflammation?

When an injury to the body occurs for any reason, inflammation occurs. Chemicals from the body’s white blood cells are released into the blood or affected tissues in an attempt to rid the body of foreign substances created by the injury, and to  repair tissue trauma.  This release of chemicals increases the blood flow to the area and may result in redness and warmth.  A chemical cascade effect takes place, with the immune system being “activated”, which calls white blood cells to the site to eat up the injured dead cells from the injury, while at the same time increasing blood flow to the injured site. Some of the chemicals cause leakage of fluid into the tissues, resulting in swelling. The cells move out of the vein and into the injured tissue, where they normally are not. The inflammatory process will likely stimulate nerves and cause pain, as will the swelling.  Additionally, depending on the injury itself, the nerve may have been directly injured, which will cause pain.  Once the white blood cells “eat” the injured and dead cells, they themselves start to release toxic enzymes into the tissue, which is a chemical signal for yet MORE cells to be called to the site.  This response by the body will continue until the injury is repaired.

Pain is caused when ever a nerve is injured or inflammed by any disease process, or there is tissue damage.   Nerves can be injured by being “pinched” between things, like a bone and disc, or “pinched: due to pressure from a swollen inflammed area.  Pain can arise in any organ or system  Because pain is subjective and intensly personal, sympathetic care and support is a very important part of pain relief.  In addition to analgesic pain relievers, doctors SHOULD use a wide variety of tools and techniques to help alleviate the pain and find and treat the root cause of the pain.  All too often we get a script for a pain killer without getting to the root cause of the problem, so we are only masking the pain, and not fixing the problem.

Young Living Essential Oils treat not only the pain, but decrease the inflammation from the site, helping you not only feel better quicker, but to get better quicker.

Please look for my anti-inflammatory pain blend in my store, http://headandhoof.com/.

I hope this blend will help you through your weekly aches and pains as much as it has helped me and my friends, because, let’s be honest, when you’re in pain it effects every part of you, including your mood and attitude, so, turn your frown upside down and buy some Happy Cell today.

The Fluoride Controversy: Fluoride is a drug, do our children need it?  part 2

After doing some additional research, I found some shocking studies and research I would like to share with you.

I am a nurse, so things click for me when I read a technical article.  If I write something that you don’t understand, please contact me, and I’ll re-word it as best I can into non medical terms.

Every body contains a Pineal Gland, which regulates melatonin in the body.  It is a light-sensitive neuroendocrine organ attached to the roof of the third ventricle of the brain. The pineal gland secretes melatonin, other biogenic amines, and neuropeptides. If something is wrong with the Pineal Gland, something will become sick or malfunctioning in your body.  This is basic Fact.  The Pineal Gland is a small gland located between the two hemispheres of the brain that regulates the production of the hormone melatonin. Melatonin is a hormone that helps regulate the onset of puberty and helps protect the body from cell damage caused by free radicals.

Dr. Jennifer Luke from the University of Surrey in England (1997) has found that calcified pineal glands contain a huge concentration of fluoride: “In terms of mineralized tissue, the mean fluoride concentration in the pineal calcification was equivalent to that in severely fluorosed bone and more than four times higher than in corresponding bone ash, i.e., 8,900 ± 7,700 vs. 2,040 ± 1,100 mg/kg, respectively. The calcification in two of the 11 pineals analyzed in this study contained extremely high levels of fluoride: 21,800 and 20,500 mg/kg.” Fluoride and the Pineal Gland. As well as the hard tissue build-up, the aged pineal also contains more fluoride than any other soft tissue. However, in her later 2001 study, Luke says that “The high fluoride levels in the pineal are presumably due to the large surface area of the HA crystallites both intra- and extracellularly….There was no correlation between pineal fluoride and bone fluoride. Therefore, unlike bone, pineal fluoride concentrations are not indicators of long-term fluoride exposure and body burden. Pineal fluoride, however, was significant.” She concluded that the fluoride buildup in the pineal may affect melatonin synthesis”…………. “” an increased calcification of the pineal gland represents a decrease in the number of functioning pinealocytes, which results in a decreased ability of the pineal gland to produce melatonin.” see studies: Kunz 1999; Mahlberg 2009 for calcification causing reduction in melatonin production.”.

Journalist Christopher Bryson claims, in his book, The Fluoride Deception, “that since the Manhattan project in the 1940s, when fluoride was used for enriching the uranium that was to be used in atomic bombs, a propaganda project was started, to convince workers and locals to the Tennessee nuclear plant, that fluoride was not only safe, but was also good for children’s teeth. In the 1950s, the advertising spinmaster Edwad Bernays used the situation as an experiment in public gullibility, and the AMA started to endorse adding of fluoride to public water supplies. All studies that showed results contradicting the supposed benign nature of fluoride on health were effectively censored”.  See also the book by Barry Groves, Fluoride: Drinking Ourselves to Death

Other health side-effects include Alzheimer’s disease, cancer, Fluoride and liver cancer, Fluoride-cancer-connection, respiratory, immune system, brain (falling I.Q.shown in a Chinese study), memory, arthritis and bone diseases, Skeletal fluoridosis, kidney problems, reproductive problems, thyroid disruption, (as shown by the National Research Council in 2008) and more.   http://www.diagnosis2012.co.uk/new11.html#fluoridev

Dr. Mercola has cited some studies:  “Following the initial breakthroughs on the link between fluoride and pineal gland calcification, scientists began to examine the issue more closely. In 2006, the National Research Council (NRC) released its report: “Fluoride in Drinking Water: A Scientific Review of EPA’s Standards.”

“The NRC began working on the report in 2003 as requested by the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) in order to review the latest research on fluoride toxicity and assess the EPA’s current safe drinking water standards for fluoride. In 2006, the report was released with a summary that backed up the work of Dr. Luke and her research team who conducted the first experiment on the role fluoride plays in pineal gland calcification back in 1997. The summary was printed in the National Academies Press, Washington D.C. P221-22:”

“The single animal study of pineal function indicates that fluoride exposure results in altered melatonin production and altered timing of sexual maturity… Recent information on the role of the pineal organ in humans suggests that any agent that affects pineal function could affect human health in a variety of ways, including effects on sexual maturation, calcium metabolism, parathyroid function, postmenopausal osteoporosis, cancer, and psychiatric disease.”

One main role of your pineal gland is to produce melatonin, the natural sleep hormone that plays a vital role in your normal sleep function. Melatonin is not only necessary for proper sleep, it also regulates the onset of puberty and fights against harmful free radicals. When your pineal gland function is suppressed, melatonin production suffers and you are putting yourself at risk for a number of startling conditions including: Alzheimer’s disease, Circadian dysregulation, Insomnia, Bipolar disease, Hormone imbalances, low melatonin, and low back pain.

Thanks to research first conducted by the University of Surrey in England in 1997, it is now known that the soft tissue of the adult pineal gland contains more fluoride than any other soft tissue in your body. In fact, the levels of pineal gland fluoride examined in the study were high enough to inhibit enzymes.

When your enzymes are damaged, it can lead to collagen breakdown, eczema, tissue damage, skin wrinkling, genetic damage, and immune suppression. It can also cause problems with your:

  • Immune system
  • Digestive system
  • Respiratory system
  • Blood circulation
  • Kidney function

“Pineal gland fluoride levels were measured at 330 parts per million (ppm). The EPA currently sets the maximum allowed level of sodium fluoride in the drinking water at 4 ppm. This is nothing compared to the amount of fluoride found to be stored in the harder tissues of your pineal gland known as hyroxyapatite crystals. Fluoride levels observed in the hard tissue were found to be as high as 21,000 ppm. Hyroxyapatite crystals store more fluoride than any other hard tissue in your body, including teeth and bone.

The results were surprising even to the scientists on the research team. Animals treated with fluoride not only had lower levels of melatonin as expected, but female animals experienced an early onset of puberty. Due to the interference of melatonin production in the animals in response to the fluoride treatment, the hormonal triggers that are responsible for puberty were disturbed.”

Dr. Luke summarized the findings:

“In conclusion, the human pineal gland contains the highest concentration of fluoride in the body. Fluoride is associated with depressed pineal melatonin synthesis by prepubertal gerbils and an accelerated onset of sexual maturation in the female gerbil. The results strengthen the hypothesis that the pineal has a role in the timing of the onset of puberty.”

For the majority of people living in areas with public fluoridated tap water, fluoride is in our faces every day, it is a part of every glass of water, every bath and shower, and every meal cooked using that water.

Here is a link to the Fluoride Action Newsletter, where you can read additional information gathered over the years on Fluoride  http://www.fluoridealert.org/

As per Saint Lukes Medical Center, the ways to test your Pineal Gland are: http://pslmc.com/health_library/detail.htm?id=104867

Diagnosis

Your doctor will ask about your symptoms and medical history. A physical exam will be done. You will be referred to an endocrinologist. This is a doctor that specialized on glands and hormones. Tests may include:

  • Blood tests—to measure pituitary and other gland (prolactin, TSH, FT4, IGF-1, growth hormone, corticotrophin or ACTH, beta human gonadotropin, alpha subunit, estradiol, testosterone), hormone levels, blood sugar levels and to identify other underlying conditions that may be causing your symptoms
  • Urine tests—to measure excretion levels of certain pituitary gland hormones (beta human gonadotropin, cortisol)
  • Visual field tests—to check for problems with peripheral vision
  • MRI scan —a test that uses strong magnets and radio waves to create pictures of the pituitary gland near the brain

Special Tests

  • Glucose tolerance test—the standard test for acromegaly
  • Dexamethasone suppression test and corticotropin-releasing hormone (CRH) test—best tests to see if excessive secretion of hormones from the adrenal gland is due to a pituitary adenoma

CALL YOUR HEALTHCARE PROVIDER IMMEDIATELY IF YOU THINK YOU MAY HAVE A MEDICAL EMERGENCY. Always seek the advice of your physician or other qualified health provider prior to starting any new treatment or with any questions you may have regarding a medical condition.

Here’s the bottom line: If you or your child are experiencing any of the above medical problems, especially early puberty or sleep disturbances (insomnia), for your sake, get your pineal gland tested.  Doctors are very quick to treat our symptoms, but sadly more reluctant to dig deeper to get to the root of the problem, which, in all fairness to doctors, is not always easy to discover.  Don’t just medicate your symptoms, find out why they are occurring in the first place, and let’s fix that, so that hopefully there will be no symptoms that need to be medicated.

Aliss Terpstra states on the  Fluoride Poisoning Group,

“The least expensive lab test for fluoride is a 24 hour urine test in which a person collects their urine for a 24 hour period.  The fluoride concentration in the sample is measured using an ion specific electrode meter. A result of more than 1 ppm (1 mg/L) means there is fluoride overdose.”

“The most expensive yet accurate test is a fasting serum (blood) test, requiring a licensed medical professional to draw blood, and send it to a medical lab. It is almost impossible to request this test through normal channels such as a family doctor in any country where artificial fluoridation is done.”

“Doctors are taught that increased fluoride intake is beneficial, and elevated serum fluoride is not harmful until it is grossly high.  They believe there is no point in testing for serum fluoride unless the person has signs of acute fluoride poisoning with evidence of high exposure such as a workplace chemical spill or overdose from fluorinated drug or dental product. But even then, the toxicity will be underestimated and even scoffed at.”

“In theory, a medical doctor should be able to order several related medical tests that strongly indicate chronically elevated fluoride in the blood”

  1. Blood calcium level:  Any emergency room doctor would know to check this when someone arrives with symptoms of low blood calcium that may accompany heart attack or stroke – or fluoride poisoning.
  2. Urine test for increased bone collagen protein breakdown:  The results of this test can find evidence of bone loss – or chronic fluoride poisoning.
  3. Parathyroid Hormone (PTH): This blood test measures abnormal calcium metabolism – or chronic fluoride poisoning.
  4. Thyroid function blood tests: These blood tests measure evidence of hypothyroid function (such as increased TSH, change in ratio between Free T4 and Free T3) – or chronic fluoride poisoning.

One Reliable Test

“There is one reliable test that costs nothing except bottled water and doesn’t need a doctor. The test is to discontinue all known sources of fluoride, to consume and cook with only distilled water for 2-3 weeks and record what happens.”

One of three things will happen:
1. No difference, no changes: fluoride is not the issue.
2. A worsening of symptoms, followed by gradual improvement: you’re fluoride poisoned.
3. Dramatic improvement in symptoms:  you’re fluoride poisoned.”

"There is nothing in a caterpillar that tells you it's going to be a butterfly." ~ R. Buckminster Fuller

Headache discomfort.I eagerly resorted to trying this threesome of essential oils again based on an experience I had this past winter when my back was killing me from moving. All day I had a headache brought on from pain in the back of my neck on the left side. I probably slept funny the night before and something in my neck was pinched and therefore causing the headache.

So, I applied 4 drops of my Young Living Ginger, 4 drops of Jasmine, and 4 drops of Lavender. Massaged in for a few minutes and before the massaged in part was completed my headache was 100 percent GONE!!!

I would highly recommend this combination of oils for anyone who is having headache discomfort from something going on in the back of their neck. It worked like a charm! Oh, my boyfriend just reminded me to say… that this combination smells great too, it would make an excellent perfume!
