Vibrant, beautiful skin has always been considered an important part of health. But in today’s modern environment, soft, smooth, flawless skin can be difficult to achieve and even more challenging to maintain. Your skin’s health is largely determined by diet, lifestyle habits, and sun exposure, which can sabotage healthy skin and leave lasting effects on skin strength, resiliency, and appearance.

Therapeutic essential oils offer pure, potent plant remedies for the skin and have been used since ancient times for a number of skin care needs. The addition of Melaleuca (tea tree oil) in this serum can prevent the recurrence of breakouts and blemishes. As the leader in the essential oil industry, Young Living recognizes the many benefits of essential oils and has always promoted the use of pure essential oils as an important part of any skin care regimen.

Making your own spa-like facial recipes with superior quality ingredients, such as Young Living’s essential oils, can bring radiant results. The benefits of therapeutic-grade lavender and ylang ylang essential oils in this facial scrub recipe are healing to cells, rejuvenating and revitalizing.

The French scientist René Gattefossé was the first to discover lavender’s ability to promote tissue regeneration and speed wound healing when he severely burned his arm in a laboratory accident. Today, lavender is one of the few essential oils to still be listed in the British Pharmacopoeia. Lavender is calming, relaxing, and balancing, both physically and emotionally.

The fragrant influence of ylang ylang is balancing to male-female energies, enhances spiritual attunement, combats anger, combats low self-esteem, and increases focus of thoughts, filters out negative energy. Restores confidence and peace. Ylang Ylang flowers are picked early in the morning to maximize essential oil yield.

Blue Cornmeal, Lavender and Ylang Ylang Facial Scrub

You will need:

  • 1 tsp. Blue Cornmeal
  • a little warm water
  • 1 drop Young Living Lavender essential oil
  • 1 drop Young Living Ylang Ylang essential oil

Mix all ingredients together and apply to face in very gentle circular motions. Rinse well, pat dry.

Do 2 times a week.

Additional Tips:

For Dry Skin: add egg yolk to chickpea flour (softens skin) with a teaspoon of honey and 1 drop of Lavender essential oil. Spread over face and neck, wait 20 minutes, then rinse off.

To lift graying cells and enliven skin tone: add 1/2 tsp. apple cider vinegar, 1 pinch fine sea salt, 1 tsp. oat flakes, and 1 teaspoon finely ground almonds, with 1 drop of Young Living Basil essential oil (mixing the basil, salt and vinegar first).

"There is nothing in a caterpillar that tells you it's going to be a butterfly." ~ R. Buckminster Fuller

In the next several weeks I will be writing articles on the many, many ways essential oils may be used for physical, mental, spiritual, emotional well-being, for ourselves, those around us, our animals, and also for keeping our homes clean and us safe, by using non toxic chemicals.

So let me get started.

Acne

Our skin is our armor and the largest absorbent organ of the body. Protecting the skin environment is essential. Many chemical molecules are too large to be absorbed and lay on the surface of the skin, causing irritation, resulting in rashes, itching, blemishes, flaky and dry skin, dandruff, and allergies.

Essential oils are soluble through lipids in the skin and are easily absorbed. Many skin conditions may be related to dysfunctions of the liver. It may be necessary to cleanse, stimulate, and condition the liver and colon for 30 to 90 days before the skin begins to improve.

Acne results from an excess accumulation of dirt and sebum around the hair follicle and the pores of the skin. This accumulation may be due to an over-production of sebum, an oily substance that is secreted by the sebaceous glands in the hair follicles. As the pores and hair follicles become congested, bacteria begins to feed on the sebum. This leads to inflammation and infection around the hair follicle and the formation of a pimple or a puss-filled blackhead.

One of the most common forms of acne, Acne vulgaris, occurs primarily in adolescents due to hormone imbalances, which stimulate the creation of sebum.

Acne in adults can be also be caused by hormone balances, as well as use of chlorinated compounds, endocrine system imbalances, or poor dietary practices. Heavy or greasy makeup can also contribute to acne.

Companies, in my opinion, can produce some very questionable ad campaigns. Most recently, the commercial on high-fructose corn syrup and making the person who says “high-fructose corn syrup, haven’t you heard…” look like an uninformed person, while the supposed informed person touts that high fructose corn syrup is all natural and comes from corn. The fact is, while it has come from corn it is not natural and not ok to consume in moderation (which simply means it will take a little bit longer for you to suffer the negative health consequences. For those who are interested in knowing ‘why’ high fructose corn syrup is bad for your health here 20 answers out of many others…

20 High-Fructose Corn Syrup Facts:

  1. Increases our risk of obesity, diabetes, hypertension, and atherosclerosis.
  2. Almost always comes from GM corn. If you’re uncertain as to why GM crops should be avoided like the plaque watch this movie (free to watch online on Hulu) “The Future of Food.”
  3. It is so ubiquitous in processed foods and so over-consumed by the average American that many experts believe our nation faces the prospect of an epidemic of metabolic disease in the future.
  4. Is much less expensive than cane sugar, making it a preferred choice of companies who are more interested in price point and profits, rather than the health of the consumer. Read the rest of this entry »

Many people have thyroid imbalances and could possibly be on a synthetic pharmaceutical drug to help with the imbalance. Most people are on these medications for many years and some, all of their lives.  For anyone who is on any type of pharmaceutical drug it is important to research and be educated on the side effects that may result from synthetic drugs.

The thyroid manufactures the hormones that help control metabolism and an unbalanced thyroid may causing either anxiety or depression. Generally, the more severe the thyroid disease, the more severe the mood changes.  So, it is important, for better health to have a healthy thyroid.

Myrtle has been researched by Dr. Daniel Pénoël for normalizing hormonal imbalances of the thyroid and ovaries, as well as balancing the hypothyroid. It has also been researched for its soothing effects on the respiratory system.

Myrtle (Myrtus communis) The Hebrew name for Queen Esther was Hadassah which means myrtle. Myrtle oil is steam distilled from the leaves. Myrtle is antimutagenic, a liver stimulant, a prostate and thyroid stimulant, a sinus and lung decongestant, and is antispasmodic.

Nehemiah 8:15—“And that they should publish and proclaim in all their cities, and in Jerusalem, saying, Go forth unto the mount, and fetch olive branches, and pine branches, and myrtle branches, and palm branches, and branches of thick trees, to make booths, as it is written.”

Isaiah 55:13- “Instead of the thorn shall come up the fir tree, and instead of the brier shall come up the myrtle tree.”

Women know the feelings of being overwhelmed, out of “sorts”, depressed, trouble staying focused and even issues with skin blemishes.  Does this remind you of “that time of the month?”  It is such a bothersome time that women go through and the lousy part about it is that it comes back each and every month.  The intensity may be different each month, and some months are over the top.

Galbanum may help to ease some of these feelings and is a nice alternative to the physicians suggestions for relief.  Would you be willing to try a natural alternative to see if you could feel relief with some of the womanly monthly feelings?  I know I would.

“And the Lord said unto Moses, take unto thee sweet spices, stacte, an onycha, and galbanum, these sweet spices with pure frankincense of each there shall be a like weight.” Exodus 30: 34

Scriptures: Exodus 30:34-36

Galbanum is mentioned in Egyptian papyri and the Old Testament (Exodus 30:34) it was esteemed for its medicinal and spiritual properties. Dioscorides, an ancient Roman historian, records that galbanum was used for its antispasmodic, diuretic, and pain-relieving properties.

Galbanum is harmonic and balancing, amplifies spiritual awareness and meditation. When combined with frankincense or sandalwood, the frequency rises dramatically.

Source: Resins in stems and branches.

Ancient Uses: Holy anointing oils, various medicines, perfume, spiritually uplifting yet grounding, pain relief, spasms and cramps, diuretic.

Modern Uses: Abscesses, acne, asthma, chronic cough, cramps, indigestion, muscular aches and pains, scar tissue, wounds, emotionally balancing.  Monoterpenes reprogram cellular memory thus promoting permanent healing.*

Application: Topically, orally

Galbanum oil is found in: Gathering and Exodus II

Galbanum (ferula gummosa) was valued for its medicinal and spiritual qualities. It was known as Moses favorite oil. “And the Lord said unto Moses, take unto thee sweet spices, stacte, an onycha, and galbanum, these sweet spices with pure frankincense of each there shall be a like weight.” Exodus 30: 34

Uses of Galbanum:

  • Feeling overwhelmed?  Put 2-3 drops of Galbanum on the bottom of each foot.  May  help to bring emotional balance.*
  • For sore muscles apply a few drops to the affected area. If it is a large area, mix with a few drops of V-6 mixing oil.*
  • For that time of the month when a woman needs a little up lifting or is cramping, put 3 -4 drops on the bottom of each foot. Also inhale the oil.*
  • If you can not seem to focus on what you are doing then put a drop in the palm of your hand and rub a little on each temple and on the brain stem. Cup hand over nose and inhale deeply.*
  • For indigestion put a drop on your stomach.*
  • During time of prayer apply to the bottom of feet and apply a drop in hands, rub hands together, cup over nose, and breathe deeply.
  • Combine with frankincense and diffuse for spiritual uplifting.*
  • Diffuse or apply 2 drops to temples or message into scalp. May help to relieve a headache.*
  • Rub 2-3 drops over kidneys and/or on Vita Flex points of feet for kidney/bladder concerns.*

Pain — ranging from constant, chronic, to periodic — plagues millions of people around the world, in the form of back pain, muscle pain, headache, arthritis, joint pain, and injuries. When such moments occur we’ve been conditioned to ease the pain, rather than explore what is the cause.

MSM, or Methylsulfonylmethane, the “miracle” supplement is a safe, natural, side-effect-free, nontoxic sulfur compound with potent therapeutic value. Whether it’s your lifestyle that is out of balance or caused an injury, or if you’re looking to enhance your natural lifestyle the research on MSM could be just what you’ve been seeking.

MSM: A New Solution for Arthritis, Allergies, and Pain

MSM (Methylsulfonylmethane) is a natural sulfur-bearing nutrient that occurs widely in nature (found in everything from mother’s breast milk to fresh vegetables). It is an exceptional source of nutritional sulfur–a mineral that is vital to protein synthesis and sound health.

Why is sulfur so important to the body?

Because sulfur is a mineral which, like vitamin C, is constantly being used up and depleted. When we fail to replenish our reserves of nutritional sulfur, we become more vulnerable to disease and degenerative conditions.

Some possible signs of sulfur deficiency are:

  • Poor nail and hair growth
  • Eczema
  • Dermatitis
  • Poor muscle tone
  • Acne / Pimples
  • Gout
  • Rheumatism
  • Arthritis
  • Weakening of nervous system
  • Constipation
  • Impairment of mental faculties
  • Lowered libido

MSM is more than just another essential nutrient

According to research compiled by Ronald Lawrence, Ph.D., M.D., and Stanley Jacob, M.D., MSM represents a safe, natural solution for chronic headaches, back pain, tendonitis, fibromyalgia, rheumatism, arthritis, athletic injuries, muscle spasms, asthma, and allergies.

In a book entitled, The Miracle of MSM, available through Essential Science Publishing, both Dr. Jacobs and Dr. Lawrence discuss how MSM has benefited hundred of patients. A UCLA neuro psychiatrist, Dr. Lawrence is convinced that MSM will revolutionize how millions of people deal with inflammatory autoimmune diseases like rheumatism, asthma, bursitis, and tendinitis, as well as auto immune diseases like arthritis, lupus, scleroderma, and allergies.

Other doctors have also seen their patients dramatically improve using 2 to 4 grams of MSM daily. According to David Blyweiss, M.D., of the Institute of Advanced Medicine in Lauderhill, Florida, many patients experience a 50 percent improvement in their arthritis symptoms, along with less fatigue, better sleep, and better ability to exercise. Dr. Lawrence has also used MSM to improve the condition of patients who were virtually crippled with arthritis and back pain. One patient was able to get out of bed for the first time after just two weeks on MSM. And after two months of MSM use, he could walk to the grocery store.

Another of Dr. Lawrence’s patients was a 70- year-old woman who was suffering from severe arthritis. In this case, MSM actually postponed the need for double knee replacement. In fact, after only two months on oral MSM, she was walking again with much less pain and stiffness.

Numerous other MSM users have experienced results equivalent to cortisone–but without side effects like immune suppression, fluid retention, and weakness.

According to Stanley Jacobs, M.D., there may be no pharmaceutical back pain therapy better–or safer–than MSM. “MSM has an important role to play in the nonsurgical treatment of back pain,” he said. “I have seen several hundred patients for back pain secondary to osteoarthritis, disc degeneration, spinal misalignment’s, or accidents. For such pain related conditions, MSM is usually beneficial.”

“I have been recommending MSM for more than six months,” said Richard Shaefer, a chiropractor from Wheeling, Illinois. “The results have been excellent. I consistently see major reduction in pain and inflammation in arthritic joints, along with improved range of motion. I can’t think of a single individual who isn’t getting some kind of positive effect.”

MSM may have other benefits aside from its pain and inflammation-reducing properties. Numerous patients have reported a surge in energy levels along with thicker hair, nails, and skin. Some have even reported a softening or disappearance of scar tissue.

One user reported a marked increase in stamina and energy after starting on MSM. “For a long while I have had the blahs,” complained Lou Salyer of Tucson, Arizona. “I had no stamina. I had to force myself to get things done around the house. After two days on MSM, it was like a blast of energy. I am amazed at how much I get done now.”

MSM may also do much more than relieve pain.

“Prior to taking MSM (30 grams a day for 20 years), I would have a cold or flu two or three times a year,” stated Dr. Jacobs. “Since I’ve been taking MSM, I’ve not had a single cold or the flu. I can’t say that MSM prevented my cold or the flu, but it is a fascinating observation.”

MSM contains an exceptionally bio-available source of sulfur, one of the most neglected minerals needed by the human body.

Carl Pfeiffer, M.D., Ph.D., a world-renowned expert on nutritional medicine, agrees, “Sulfur is the forgotten essential element.”

Found in such foods as garlic and asparagus, the sulfur within MSM is a critical part of the amino acids cysteine and methionine, which form the building blocks of the nails, hair, and skin. Sulfur is also found in therapeutic mineral baths and hot springs that have brought relief to arthritis sufferers for centuries.

MSM is very closely related to DMSO, a powerful pain reliever that was the subject of a 60 Minutes report in April, 1980. DMSO has been approved by the FDA for interstitial cystitis, a painful urinary tract condition.

MSM the Youth Nutrient

Of particular importance is MSM’s ability to equalize water pressure inside the cells–a considerable benefit for those plagued with bursitis, arthritis, and tendinitis. These kinds of inflammatory outbreaks are created when the water pressure inside the cells jumps past the pressure outside the cells, creating pressure and pain. MSM acts as a sort of cellular safety valve, affecting the protein envelope of the cell so that water transfers freely in and out of the cell. The result: rapid relief and less damage to tissues.

Because MSM elasticizes the hold between the cells, MSM can restore flexibility to inflamed tissues. When our bodies grow older and are chronically shortchanged of key minerals like sulfur and MSM, the bonds between our cells become increasingly rigid and brittle–a condition that can lead to a loss in skin flexibility and contribute to skin wrinkles. The internal manifestations of this cellular brittleness are far less visible but have a far greater negative impact on the body. MSM’s ability to reintroduce flexibility into cell structures, therefore, can have widespread restorative affects.

"There is nothing in a caterpillar that tells you it's going to be a butterfly." ~ R. Buckminster Fuller

Each mask listed below is designed for a specific skin type. Find the one that works best with your skin type and do a little pampering! A good mask usually isn’t needed more than once a week, but you can utilize certain formulations more as needed.

Although clay masks are thought to be drying, they contain great benefits for the skin and can be used very successfully in your beauty regimen.

Green clay has become the talk of the beauty world. The absorbent properties of green clay work in beauty treatments by drawing out impurities and toxins from the skin, toning and firming while stimulating circulation. Estheticians use it to tighten pores, exfoliate dead skin, and reveal a smoother, fresher complexion. Green clay is readily available online and at natural beauty retailers. It makes an ideal base for any of the masks below.

Green Clay Mask Base

Create your mask base by mixing green clay together with a little corn flour and a quarter teaspoon of powdered raw oats.

Tip: when mixing the ‘wet’ ingredients into the clay mixture you may want to add a couple drops of water or neroli or V-6 if the mixture needs more moisture to form a nice paste.

Note: The ‘corn flour” mentioned in this recipe can be made by putting a little cornmeal in an electric coffee grinder to make it into a fine powder. I have a Krups coffee grinder that its sole purpose is for making a powder out of dried herbs, nuts, oats, and other grains – you do not want to use the same grinder that you use for your coffee beans as the coffee flavor will get into your other ground foods.

Mask for Normal Skin with Geranium Essential Oil

For a normal skin, mix the clay, corn flour, and oats together with one beaten egg white. Add one drop geranium oil. Mix well to form a paste and apply.

Mask for Dry Skin with Chamomile Essential Oil

For a dry skin, mix the clay, corn flour, and oats together with one beaten egg white. Add one teaspoon wheat germ oil or evening primrose oil, plus one drop chamomile (Roman or German) oil and two drops carrot seed oil. Mix well to form a paste and apply.

Mask for Oily Skin with Lavender and Frankincense Essential Oils

For an oily skin, mix the clay, corn flour, and oats together with one beaten egg white. Add one drop lavender oil and one drop frankincense oil or juniper berry oil. Mix well to form a paste and apply.

Mask for Problem Skin with Lavender and Tea Tree Essential Oils

For a problem skin, mix the clay, corn flour, and oats together with one beaten egg white. Add one drop lavender oil, one drop tea tree oil. Mix well to form a paste and apply.

Rejuvenating Skin Mask with Frankincense and Myrrh Essential Oils

For a general skin boost, mix the clay, corn flour, and oats together with one beaten egg white. Add one teaspoon jojoba oil, one drop chamomile oil, one drop frankincense oil, and one drop myrrh oil. Mix well to form a paste and apply.

Before Application

Before applying the mask, make sure that the skin is cleansed properly and dried by patting it with a towel. A light exfoliating cleanser such as Young Living’s Satin Facial Scrub Mint will work well in prepping the skin for the best mask application.

After applying any of the masks, leave on for at least fifteen minutes and wash off with lukewarm water and pat the skin dry. Apply moisturizer. ART® Day or Night Activator is a good recommendation for effective and refining moisture with the benefits of frankincense.

Note: If you have never used essential oils or green clay and are prone to allergies, do a patch test on a small area to gage sensitivity before applying any of these masks.
