Aromatherapy

Aromatics have a rich history and have been used for well over 10,000 years. While aromatherapy and essential oils dates back at least five centuries. Aromatherapy is the use of distilled essential oils from plants to achieve therapeutic effects that treat mental and physical imbalances, a healing modality for body, mind and spirit. Essential oils are the pure essence of the plant—often referred to as nature’s living energy—and can provide both psychological and physical benefits when used correctly. Essential oils can be used on their own for aromatherapy or with complementary treatments.

The word “aromatherapy” is used quite often these days very casually, oftentimes aromatherapy products do not contain any essential oil at all and are nothing more than chemical scents or fragrances. The most notable difference is that fragrance oils do not contain any therapeutic or health benefit. Quite often these products actually cause harm to user’s in the way of causing allergies, sensitivities, or skin problems. These products and oils are not to be confused with therapeutic-grade essential oils.

Not every plant has an essential oil aromatic sack and glands, and therefore, cannot be used or distilled to make an essential oil. These would include, but are not limited to: strawberry, lilac, honeysuckle, gardenia, mango, raspberry, watermelon, to name just a few. These are nothing more than chemical scents formulated in a lab. It is the chemical ingredients that are the root of sensitivities and undesirable health issues which lead some to believe they are allergic or sensitive to all scents when in fact it is the chemicals which are responsible.

Properly grown and distilled essential oils have their own unique character, aroma and therapeutic properties. Some can calm and relax, others bring mental clarity, while others uplift mood and help depression. Therapeutic aromatherapy can help achieve a necessary balance; providing what you need, when it is needed.
