As popularity in switching over to Green and eco-friendly solutions to daily household cleaning solutions grows so does the availability of recipes and wonderful new ideas. As a long-time proponent of getting toxic cleaning products out of our homes I am delighted to be among those who are sharing such information.
In these two recipes you will find there is not only a brilliant simplicity but that you know you are getting quality ingredients and know exactly what is in the product(s) you are using. It only requires a couple of minutes to mix up these recipes and it is fun!
I began making all of my own essential oil cleaning products and air fresheners in 1991 and I have not purchased any store-bought products since – this is empowering! Give it a try and see what I mean… it is exciting to make the switch and fully know that you are minimizing your, your family and your pets exposure to toxins daily.
Lemon Bleach for Household Cleaning Purposes Recipe (makes 1 quart)
- 2 cups hydrogen peroxide (3% solution)
- 2 TBSP lemon juice -or- 1/2 tsp. citric acid
- 2 cups water
- 10 drops Lemon essential oil
Mix all ingredients together and store in dark-colored or covered bottles, as exposure to light will weaken the solution. The bleach mixture stays good up to 1 month in a clear bottle, 2-3 months in a dark bottle.
Homemade Lemon Bleach for Laundry
When doing laundry you will want a non-toxic bleach recipe that is less potent – you don’t bleach the colors out of your clothing.
Note: If you do use the bleach cleaning recipe above for laundry, use only 1/4 cup and test on light-colored fabrics first – I don’t want you to risk fading the colors in your clothes!
In this recipe the lemon juice is an important ingredient, do not omit it! The citric acid acts as a whitener, a very mild disinfectant, and as a water softener which allows stains to be lifted out more easily.

2 Bonus Tips: Dryer Sheets and Static Cling
Bonus Tip #1: Essential Oil Dryer Sheet
With essential oils in our arsenal there is no need for buying and using toxic dryer sheets either. To make your own scented dryer sheets take a dampened washcloth (one used specifically for this purpose), put 4-5 drops of Lavender essential oil on the washcloth, toss into dryer with laundry.
Other essential oils to use for making scented dryer sheets:
- Essential Oil Singles: Geranium, Eucalyptus, Orange.
- Essential Oil Blends: Abundance, Citrus Fresh, Gentle Baby, Joy, Peace & Calming, Purification, Sensation, or Thieves.
Bonus Tips #2: How to Reduce Static Cling
Static cling is almost always the result of either or both of the following: 1) using too hot dryer settings, and/or 2) drying at too high a temperature for too long.
Solution: Try turning down the temperature and shorten the length of drying time.
