Uses for Spearmint Essential Oil

I adore the fresh lively scent of Spearmint and incorporate it into nearly every recipe I make, everything from air fresheners, to household cleaner, to flavoring of food and beverages; I am particularly fond of a hint of spearmint in my summertime pasta salads!

Some Favorite Recipes with Spearmint Oil

Summertime Pasta Salad

As I mentioned in the beginning of this post, I love a hint of spearmint oil in my pasta salad. To do this I simply cook up a pound of whatever shape pasta I want.

While the pasta is cooking I crush-up about 4-6 cloves of garlic, thinly slice about 3-5 carrots, chop up a handful of sundried tomatoes, chop up about a 1/2 cup of sweet or red onion, add some fresh sugar snap peas (or thawed frozen peas), and whatever happens to be fresh in the garden. Put all of these ingredients into a small bowl and add just a splash of Balsamic Vinegar and very carefully add NOT more than a drop of YL Spearmint essential oil (essential oils are extremely potent, if you use more than one drop it will taste too strong!) Then, stir together and pour over rinsed and cooled pasta.

I then will top it with some edible flowers (Nasturtium, Viola’s or Chive flowers) and a whole bunch of fresh Thyme flowers from the garden. Serve chilled or at room temp.

Air Fresher Spray

This is a little air freshener I concocted over 20 years ago when I first began using essential oils. I came up with it because I wanted something all-natural that smelled amazing, purified indoor air fast, and had disinfecting properties. It is still my favorite and I use it daily to spray into the air or to spritz on bed linens when I am making the bed each morning.

You will need…

  • 14oz. spray bottle
  • 15 drops Spearmint essential oil
  • 12 drops Thyme essential oil
  • 10 drops Cypress essential oil
  • 10 drops Orange essential oil
  • 10 drops Ylang Ylang or Jasmine essential oil
  • 8 drops Sandalwood essential oil
  • 3-5 drops Patchouli essential oil
  • water

Fill the spray bottle with water. Add essential oils. Shake. Spray into air for use as an air freshener. Spritz bed linens when making the bed for a I can’t wait to climb into the best smelling bed scent.

I also use this spray as my household cleaner. As a matter of fact it is so good at disinfecting surfaces that I do not use any other cleaners. I even use it to clean the tub and sinks (spritz then add some baking soda to make a softscrub cleaner) and it is excellent for use on cleaning the toilet too! It’s excellent on floors and as a car air freshener too. I use it for everything. And did I say the scent is amazing!?
