Making your own essential oil disinfectants is fun, easy and far better than any store-bought disinfectant! This is one of my favorite things to do for many reasons: it smells amazing, is inexpensive, you cannot get any more environmentally friendly, and I feel great making and using my own concoctions with my superior quality essential oils!
I personally prefer and recommend superior quality essential oils because I know they do not contain toxic chemicals and they are not adulterated. It only makes sense if I am trying to obtain a home free of harmful chemicals.
If you are looking seriously at obtaining a ‘Green’ home take a look at the Start Living with Thieves kit (scroll down that page to see what you will get), it contains many of the products to get you on your way, plus you will get wholesale pricing (24 percent off retail) when you create a an account under the distributor membership-type. There is also a special offer happening through February 2013 that might be of interest too.
How To Make Your Own Essential Oil Disinfectant
You will need:
- 14oz. spray bottle (I prefer the “Hudson” brand spray bottle found at Lowe’s because it’s stronger and will last several years. The cheap spray bottles break within a month, not cost efficient or Green at all).
- 20 -25 drops of Young Living essential oil of your choice (see good choices below).
Fill the spray bottle about 7/8 filled with water (7/8 full because you need air space in the bottle so you can shake it to disperse the essential oil). Add 20-25 drops of your essential oil, shake, and you’re ready to go!
This recipe takes less than 2 minutes to make!
How To Use Your Disinfectant Spray for Cleaning
Simply spray surfaces until damp, let it sit for a minute, wipe with a clean rag or sponge. This works perfectly for cleaning floors, countertops, toilet bowls, sinks, etc.
How To Use Your Disinfectant Spray To Clean Sinks, Tubs & Showers
Spray until moistened, sprinkle some Baking Soda into the tub or sink, rub clean, rinse.
I like to give my sinks and tubs a spritz of my spray after they’ve been cleaned and I let it air-dry, this allows the essential oil in the spray mixture to continue disinfecting.
How To Use Your Disinfectant Spray as an Air Freshener
Simply spray into the center of the room and enjoy the delightful scent.
