Sallie, I would use a dilution of maybe 2% on Phlox and would try it on a very small area first to see if it will kill your plant. I have found a far better solution for Powdery Mildew and that is to use a light dilution (1 TBSP to 32oz. water) of Thieves Household Cleaner. I have used it with great success on my Bee Balm, spraying both the upper and under sides of the leaves, every 2-3 days for 1 1/2 weeks. I feel much more comfortable using the Thieves Household Cleaner for Powdery Mildew than vinegar as I know it will not kill my plants. ~ Evelyn

Hi Gwen,

I am making a chart right now to include in this blog post. I thought reader's would pull the info out of the two studies. However, your question has prompted me to consider otherwise. I should have the chart done and inserted into the post within the hour.

Thanks for your question,
Evelyn

Please correct me if I am wrong but I do not see a chart for mixing vinegar with water for spraying on plants to kill them anywhere in this article.

What do I dilute 5% white vinegar to prevent powdery mildew? Do I spray it on Phlox?
What percentage do I use on established plants that I want to get rid of?
Thank you

Hi Sallie,
You mix the vinegar with water.
The dilution varies depending upon how old the plant is that you want to kill, refer to the studies to see which is in alignment with the maturation of your weeds. Be sure to follow the instructions as vinegar will kill any kind of plant, and if used too often or strongly will change the pH of your soil. ~ Evelyn
