Melatonin is a hormone, found in all living creatures, which helps to regulate sleep and is one of our most potent antioxidants. Peer reviewed research has been published demonstrating the potent healing effect of melatonin in an amazing range of conditions – from high blood pressure to auto-immune illnesses.

Melatonin is produced in the pineal gland in the brain. Your body makes it from the amino acid trypophan, which is also used as a building block for serotonin, the feel-good neurotransmitter in our brains. Melatonin is so important that it is not only synthesized in the pineal gland but also in many other organs and tissues of the body; particularly by bone marrow, the thymus and lymphocytes.

"There is nothing in a caterpillar that tells you it's going to be a butterfly." ~ R. Buckminster Fuller

Weeds in the garden can compete with crops for moisture, nutrients, light and space, often times they tower over and out-compete plants in our gardens we are so looking forward to seeing grow. Preventing weeds from becoming established in the garden, flower or vegetable, doesn’t have to be a daunting pain-in-the-back chore.

To put things in perspective we first need to look at what a Minnesota study found… that a 12″ wide x 12″ long x 6″ deep piece of soil, contained from 98 to 3,068 viable weed seeds. Many seeds remain viable for decades; Jimsonweed having a 90% germination rate after 40 years in the soil and field bindweed seeds are viable for a whopping 50 years!

The most natural way to eradicate weeds is to prevent them by not allowing the weed to flower – after the flower has faded, the seed forms and eventually falls to the ground, or is carried off by a bird who usually perches not too far away.

Two Safe, Low-Cost, and Effective Weed Killing Tips: the only two you’ll ever need for the home garden Read the rest of this entry »

Thsuga essential oil comes from an evergreen woodland tree, native of North America. It happens to be one of my favorites for a few reasons; I love the scent, the soft tiny needles it drops to the ground, and in it’s native environment it’s found among native Rhododendron, Jack-in-the-Pulpit, an assortment of ferns, and is usually near some of the prettiest cascading streams with moss covered rocks and boulders. The ground I love to walk on as it’s usually cushiony soft under foot and comfy for sitting on. Tsuga canadensis (Hemlock)

Appreciation of  Tsuga

Eastern hemlock is a straight-trunked, gracefully pyramidal tree with long, pendulous limbs and short-needled, feathery branches. Evergreen needles are dark-green with silvery undersides.Evergreen tree with conical crown of long, slender, horizontal branches often drooping down to the ground, and a slender, curved, and drooping leader.

The bark was once a commercial source of tannin in the production of leather. Pioneers made tea from leafy twigs and brooms from the branches. A graceful shade tree and quite beautiful in the woodland landscape. Many trim it into hedges, but I think it looks best left natural as it’s majestic beauty speaks for itself.

Eastern hemlock can be a fast-grower. It must be placed where there is good drainage and no strong, drying winds. Trees seem somewhat pH adaptable but prefers acidic soils. Sun-scorch kills back branches, and drought kills the tree. A number of diseases and insects can be troublesome, but trees in good health prove reliable. Read the rest of this entry »

"There is nothing in a caterpillar that tells you it's going to be a butterfly." ~ R. Buckminster Fuller

There are plenty of products out there that claim to be ‘Green’ but did you know that just because the label says it’s eco-friendly, all-natural, or organic, doesn’t mean the contents are as safe as you think. The fact is, according to regulations a natural product ‘can’ contain toxic chemicals, the ‘natural’ part comes into play through something I find rather misleading. Most products have a long list of ingredients and only a few of them are required to be truly natural in order to label or strongly imply a product is natural.

My way of making certain I’m getting what I pay for… I make my own!  Essential oil used by the drop

I don’t have time for messing around and creating time consuming products, whether for household cleaning, air freshening, or personal care, if it takes longer than 2-3 minutes I’m searching for a different solution.

Cleaning might be a chore, but it doesn’t have to be toxic, too! Safer products and practices are available and easy. Here are my favorites… Read the rest of this entry »

  1. Rotating Your Essential Oils for Added Benefit. For daily use, you may find your essential oils to be more effective if you rotate through different oils. For example when treating pain, you might use “Pan Away” one day, then “Motivation” the next, then “Wintergreen” the next day, and then “Relieve It” the next day.
  2. Layering Your Essential Oils. This technique consists of applying multiple oils one at a time, one at a time. For example, place a couple drops of marjoram over a sore muscle, massage it into the tissue gently until the area is dry, and then apply a second oil, such as peppermint (a couple drops), until the oil is absorbed and the skin is dry. Then layer on the third oil, such as basil (a couple drops), and continue massaging. Have your V-6 handy to use as your carrier oil to dilute your essential oils. If you’re new to Young Living essential oils, allow enough time (3-5 minutes) for the body to respond before applying a second oil, apply V-6 with each essential oil as a carrier oil. Lavender therapeutic-grade essential oil to “oilers” is considered the Swiss Army Knife or duct tape of essential oils because of its many helpful ways that may aide healing of our pets and ourselves.

LAVENDER: (Lavandula angustifolia) Lavender (Lavandula angustifolia) has a fresh, sweet, floral, herbaceous aroma that is soothing and refreshing. Because it is the most versatile of all essential oils, no home should be without it. Lavender is an adaptogen, and therefore can assist the body when adapting to stress or imbalances. It is a great aid for relaxing and winding down before bedtime, yet has balancing properties that can also boost stamina and energy. Therapeutic-grade lavender is highly regarded for skin and beauty. It may be used to soothe and cleanse common cuts, bruises, and skin irritations. The French scientist René Gattefossé was among the first to discover these properties when he was severely burned in a laboratory explosion.

How to use: For dietary, aromatic or topical use. When using as a supplement, put one drop in a capsule or in 4 fl. oz. of rice or goat’s milk.

Possible skin sensitivity. If pregnant or under a doctor’s care, consult your physician. Dilution not required; suitable for all but the most sensitive skin. Generally safe for children over 2 years of age.

Non toxic pest control!! Isn’t that a much better way to get rid of pesty critters?  Are you looking for ways that are Eco-friendly, natural, green and organic to help in the removal of pesty bugs without toxic chemicals?  In this article you will learn different ways to do just that.

Among the many chemicals in our industrial environment that get into our systems and make us sick are the pesticides we use in our homes and in our gardens. We use them because they are toxic to the creatures that bug us, but they are also toxic to us. Sometimes the toxicity is immediately apparent: we get a headache, get sick or feel nauseous from the fumes or other contact.

Sometimes the toxicity is subtle and can accumulate resulting in chronic complaints and disorders that can be serious and even deadly over time (including allergies, cancer and miscarriages). Sometimes we even put poisons on our pets to deal with ticks and fleas, not understanding or realizing that these substances are not health for our animals or us.

We don’t need poisons to kill pests. We can repel them (and even sometimes kill them) with substances that are not only harmless to us but are actually healthful to us. What could this be? Therapeutic-grade essential oils.

One way to do this is to get a pistol-grip squirt bottle. Mix a few drops of the essential oil with some water, shake it up, and start firing.  You can do this with most pests.

A Statistical Validation of Raindrop Technique by David Stewart, Ph.D., R.A.

Abstract

During the past ten years, Raindrop Technique has become a widely used therapeutic protocol throughout the United States. Numerous anecdotal accounts relate the significant and substantive benefits generated by this procedure. Raindrop Technique has been use to ameloriate cases of viral infection, kyphosis, scoliosis, chronic fatigue syndrome, and many other conditions.

As its popularity and usage have increased, a small group of aromatherapists has questioned the use of the procedure and its reliance on undiluted therapeutic-grade essential oils. So, in an effort to statistically validate the benefit (or lack thereof) of the Raindrop Technique, I circulated a questionnaire in late 2001 among several thousand aromatherapists, health practitioners, and users of essential oils to poll those who receive Raindrop and those who perform it. This study summarizes the experiences of more than 14,000 sessions of Raindrop. Raindrop Technique

Of the 422 adults who responded to the survey, 370 were female and 52 were male. They represented 39 states of the United States, 5 provinces of Canada, and 5 other countries. 265 were facilitators, 259 were both facilitators and receivers, 157 were receivers only. Among the 416 receivers, a total of 3,584 Raindrop procedures were experienced (mean value = 8.6 treatments each). Among the 265 facilitators, a total of 11,256 procedures were reported (mean value = 42.5 each). Receivers reported their Raindrop experiences to be Positive (97%), Pleasant (98%), Resulted in healing (16%), Felt better afterwards (98%), Improved health (89%), and Improved emotional state (86%). 99.9% of receivers said they would receive Raindrop again.
