Spikenard was highly regarded in India as a perfume, health-supporting herb, and skin tonic. Prized at the time of Christ, it was used by Mary of Bethany to anoint the feet of Jesus before the Last Supper. This is a relaxing and soothing oil for the skin.

Spikenard is an aromatic flowering herb native to the Himalayan Mountains of India and Tibet. In Biblical times it was imported from there to the Holy Land and shipped in boxes carved from alabaster. This fact is yet another clue that the woman’s ointment contained spikenard.

Highly regarded in India as a medicinal herb. It was one of the most precious oils in ancient times, used only by priests, kings, or high initiates. References in the New Testament describe how Mary of Bethany used a salve of spikenard to anoint the feet of Jesus before the Last Supper. According to Dietrich Gumbel, Ph.D. it strengthens heart and improves circulation.

Two days before the Passover in the house of Simon the Leper, was where Jesus was anointed on his head. Six days before the passover the oil was poured over his feet.

Spikenard (Nardostachys jatamansi) has also been known as “nard” and “false Indian Valerian root” oil. It was prized in early Egypt and in the Middle East during the time of our Savior. Spikenard is 93% sesquiterpenes, which have the ability to oxygenate the brain. The amount of Spikenard that was poured on our Savior before his death would be worth almost $2,000.00 in today’s currency…or a year’s wages for a common laborer in that time.

Uses of Spikenard:

  • Dilute a few drops with V-6 Mixing Oil and apply to rough or wrinkled skin.*
  • Dilute 50/50 with V-6 Mixing Oil and apply on location, may help with hemorrhoids (this may sting initially).*
