Each and every one of us has “downer days”. No matter how upbeat and positive a person may be, they are not exempt from feeling low at some point in their lives. For many, the low feelings are much too often, and they could be at their wits end, wanting to feel relief and to feel happy and upbeat.
Rose of Sharon/Cistus is one of many essential oils that may help to uplift ones spirits. Here is a brief explanation of how a therapeutic-grade essential has the capability to help with emotional imbalances.
Essential oils are small, energetic molecules that easily evaporate. This molecular property (small size) enables them to penetrate human tissues and pass through the cell membranes. This is also the property that makes it possible to smell them and take them into our bodies through the olfactory system. In doing so, the molecules not only reach all parts of the body via the blood stream accessed through our lungs, they also go directly to our brain, crossing the blood-brain barrier.
The blood-brain barrier, or interstitial tissue, acts like a filter to keep damaging substances from reaching the neurons of the brain and the cerebrospinal fluid. Only molecules of certain size and smaller can pass through the blood-brain barrier. Only molecules less than 500-1000 atomic mass units (amu) in molecular weight can get through. Essential oil atomic mass units are less than 500.
Thus originates the term “aromatherapy”, therapeutic purposes merely by inhaling or breathing in their aromas. Plus you add to this that essential oils are imbued with God’s intelligence. God created them to know what to do.
One of the most powerful healing aspects of essential oils is the ability to penetrate the blood-brain barrier.
When breathing in the oil molecules into the back passages of your nose, they go straight to the brain in the central part, called the amygdala. This is the central headquarters of the limbic system, which manages the storage of your emotional experiences. It responds only to smell.
This is why when you smell a scent it brings up a memory. Like the smell of apple pie may remind you of your grandmother.
When an essential oil penetrates into the central brain, it makes it possible for us to access forgotten memories of emotions with which we need to deal with, in life. Stored emotions can make us sick. If they are stored in the stomach, you can have stomach ailments. If in the joints, you can have arthritis.
Hence, if you are feeling low, or “down in the dumps”, by utilizing the aromatherapy of therapeutic-grade essential oils, such as Rose of Sharon/Cistus, you may be on to healing of not only your emotional feelings but also an ailment that may be going on in your body.
Essential oils of every species cross the blood-brain barrier. This makes them uniquely able to address disease, not only from a physical level but also from a more basic and fundamental level—that of the emotions which are often the root cause of physical illness.
Rose of Sharon/Cistus (Cistus ladanifer) is also known as rock rose. It has been studied for regeneration of the cells. Rose of Sharon is not a true rose. The flower is grown in the planes of Sharon, west of Jerusalem in the Mediterranean. This beautiful oil has a soft honey like scent.
Song of Solomon 2:1“I am the Rose of Sharon, and the lily of the valley”
The healing capability of rock rose or cistus was noted centuries ago when sheep and goats would accumulate the gum of this shrub in their hair as they browsed through the desert. The shepherds noticed that when they rubbed their hands on the wool with this resin, any cuts and scratches would heal much faster.
