Did you know that one of the ways chemical air fresheners work is by coating the nasal passages with a chemical substance that deadens the nerves in your nose? And also that ingredients in common air fresheners include toxic chemicals like phthalates (which increase your risk of experiencing endocrine, reproductive, and developmental problems)? And that they even contain formaldehyde, a known carcinogen (carcinogen means an agent that causes cancer)? Even some of the products that elude to be more natural, and tout that they contain essential oils actually contain toxic chemicals in them as well. According to Dr. Ben Kim at dr.benkim.com, air fresheners that were labeled “all- natural” and “unscented” were tested, and found positive for phthalates, yet this toxic ingredient was not listed on the label!

In my article  Pregnancy, Children/kids and Chemical Pollution I wrote about how babies are being born with 300 chemicals in their little bodies, and how it is because adults have up to 455 in their bodies. The article covered how these chemicals are being linked to serious diseases, and these chemicals  come from the most obvious places, such as household chemical cleaners, regular bath/body products, water, and in-organic food. If you want to create  a healthy environment in your home, it is so important to get away from products made with chemicals. With healthier, effective, and wonderful natural options out there, it makes no sense to use products that will harm your family now or in the long run. Below are some suggested alternatives to Air fresheners, Plug-in’s, and other chemical air deodorizers.

Thieves Disinfectant Spray. This spray smells like cinnamon and cloves, just use it like you would Lysol (or other disinfectant aresol can spray) to clean, disinfect, and deodorize. Below are twelve ways to use Thieves Disinfectant spray:

  1. Toilets seats out in public
  2. The shopping cart handle bar
  3. Door handles/knobs
  4. Computer keyboards/mouse
  5. Steering wheels
  6. Phones
  7. Toys
  8. To freshen the air in your home, office and car. I especially like to use it in my car on town trips in between stops-just in case we came in contact with someone who was sick, or carrying a virus or bacteria in the store!
  9. In stinky shoes
  10. To freshen stale closets and kill dust mites
  11. To kill dust mites in your bed and to freshen sheets between washings
  12. To spray on pillows and couches/furniture to kill dust mites and disinfect
  • Baking soda, just pour some in a decorative bowl and set in the room you want to deodorize. Also, sprinkle on carpets just prior to vacuuming. Another tip is to take around 10 drops of your favorite essential oil, such as lavender or Ylang Ylang, or perhaps Young Livings disinfectant Thieves blend and mix it with a food processor or egg beaters into 5 cups  baking soda, store in a shakable but airtight container, and use this to sprinkle on your floors around 10 minutes prior to vacuuming.
  • Take an 8 oz spray bottle, and fill it half full with pure grain alcohol (vodka) and the rest of the way with water. Add around 20 drops of your favorite essential oils and use it in place of aerosol sprays. You can create floral scents with essential oils of rose, ylang ylang, jasmine absolute, geranium, and blends of Gentle Baby, White Angelica, Joy or Harmony, and you can create more spicy scents with clove, cinnamon, sandalwood, and Blends of Christmas Spirit, Thieves, Three Wise Men, and Inspiration. Mentally stimulating blends can be created with Transformation, Clarity, M-Grain, Magnify Your Purpose and Peppermint.
  • Instead of plug ins, get a cold air diffuser and diffuse essential oils!

Another benefit to using therapeutic grade aromatherapy oils to naturally clean and freshen the air in your home is you will reap the positive olfactory rewards.  Olfactory is the effects of scents on the brain. Inhaling therapeutic grade essential oils can have a direct, positive effect on the brain, and can uplift mood, relieve anxieties, and have healthful benefits for the body as well. Other oils can be highly contaminated with synthetic chemicals, learn more here.
