Article contributed by Shayla. Not very many people want wrinkles. In fact, I don’t know anybody that wants them! Everywhere, women in particular are always on the hunt for new ways to prevent and reverse the aging process of their face. Knowing how, and why wrinkles form can be helpful in knowing what to look for in an anti-wrinkle cream. In this article we will discuss these topics, as well as some elite, facial care products to help you fight the war against creases!
As we age our skin becomes thinner, drier, and starts loosing it’s elasticity. Environmental factors also come into play when it comes to wrinkles. Free radicals for example cause skin to age more quickly (see my article on Petrochemicals, Free Radicals, and Essential Oils to learn how to combat these environmental factors). Keeping the skin well hydrated with the right moisturizer can really help with the anti-aging process. Notice I said “the right moisturizer” though! Most cosmetics on the market contain ingredients that are not only cancer causing, but can actually, in time, do the opposite of what you are purchasing them for. Chemicals are not friends of the skin! In a test conducted by the Environmental Working Group, many skin care products including cosmetics and around the eye and anti-wrinkle creams were tested to have cancer causing contaminants above government recommended limits (see article here). That’s not too pretty! Parabens, another dangerous ingredient that is actually banned from European cosmetics, are in ours and they have been found to disrupt the endocrine system. The list of dangerous ingredients can go on and on.
Therapeutic grade essential oils can be very beneficial in combating the aging process. According the Essential Oils Desk Reference, oils of frankincense, helichrysum, cypress, rose, lavender, ylang ylang, patchouli, sage, geranium, clary sage, rosewood, sandalwood, jasmine, neroli, palmarosa, and spikenard as well as blends of Gentle Baby and Sensation are all suggested for improving skin tone and youthfulness. I like to make my own anti-wrinkle lotion using the frankincense and Gentle Baby blend in the recipe below. Be sure to use therapeutic grade essential oils such as provided by Young Living, others can be contaminated with chemicals and toxins, and cause problems including rashes.
Anti-wrinkle Lotion Recipe
2 1/2 ounces of beeswax
2/3 cup almond or avocado oil
3/4 cup aloe vera gel or juice
approximately 1 to 2 teaspoons Young Livings Gentle Baby Blend
1 teaspoon Frankincense oil
Blender, or electric hand mixer, (a hand mixer with the whisk attachment works best)
Melt the beeswax, over low heat in a heavy, medium sized stainless steel or glass pan (I like glass best). Do the same with the almond oil. Make sure the beeswax pan is the size of pan you can add more to and use an electric whisker with. It is best to keep stirring the beeswax frequently. As soon as it is melted, remove it from the heat (do not let it burn) and stir in the oil. Set this aside, and have the aloe vera heating on low heat in a separate pan (you can use the same pan you heated the oil with). Once it is warm, place the beeswax mixture and the aloe on hot pads near the outlet you will be using for the electric mixer and begin mixing the beeswax mixture, and slowly trickling in the aloe. By the time you have mixed the aloe completely in, the mixture will be a yellowish white cream. The creamy lotion will continue to cool for a half hour or so, in which time you can periodically come back and whisk it again just to insure the ingredients don’t separate. Once it is cool add the essential oils (never add them when it is still hot, you will kill the therapeutic quality of the oil).
This makes a wonderful cream that lasts for ages. I do keep mine refrigerated since I only use small amounts at a time, and I keep a small jar full in my bathroom for after I shower. Not only does this smell heavenly, but it moisturizes all day long. If you don’t have time to make your own, Young Living provides some of the finest, elite facial care products you will ever find.
