Below are practical, easy, and helpful ways these above oils can be used as well as documented information from the Essential Oils Desk Reference (available from Abundant Health and highly recommended for every home)!

Lavender
If lavender had little to no therapeutic value, it would still probably be one of the best known and most used oils for its winning scent! It does, however, have wonderful therapeutic value which makes it even more appealing! If you or a family member has ever received a bad burn and used lavender oil then you know of its miraculous abilities to ease pain from burns. Lavender oil is, in fact, the essential oil that began the rediscovery of essential oils for medicinal use in 1928, for as history states it was Rene Gattefosse, a French scientist who badly burned his hand, and after applying lavender oil was enlightened as the pain subsided and skin regeneration took place quickly. Lavender has other uses too though! According to the Essential Oils Desk Reference, lavender oil is antiseptic, anti-fungal, analgesic, antitumoral, anticonvulsant, vasodilating, relaxant, anti-inflammatory, reduces blood fat cholesterol, and combats excess sebum on skin. Its uses are listed for respiratory infections, high blood pressure, arteriosclerosis, menstrual problems/PMS, skin conditions, acne, eczema, psoriasis, scarring, stretch marks, burns, hair loss, insomnia, and nervous tension.

Peppermint
I love putting a drop of peppermint oil in a glass gallon of water, shaking it up, and sipping from it through the day. It is so refreshing! The M.D. Jean Valnet used peppermint to treat liver and respiratory disease, and it’s medical properties are listed as Anti-inflammatory, antitumoral, anti-parasitic, antibacterial, antiviral, anti-fungal, gallbladder/digestive stimulant, pain-relieving, and appetite suppressant. It’s uses include, Rheumatism/arthritis, respiratory infections (including pneumonia, tuberculosis, etc.) obesity, viral infections (herpes simplex and zoster, cold sores, human papilloma virus etc.), fungal infections/Candida, digestive problems, headaches, nausea, skin conditions (itchy skin, varicose veins, eczema, psoriasis, as well as scoliosis/lumbago/ back problems. The University of Cincinnati found that by inhaling peppermint oil mental accuracy was increased to 28%.  At the University of Kiel, peppermint was discovered to block headache pain in double blind placebo controlled cross over studies.

Lemon
As I studied up on lemon oil for this article, all I could keep saying was “Wow”!. M.D. Jean Valnet discovered that by vaporizing (diffusing) lemon oil that it could kill meningococcus bacteria in 15 minutes, typhoid bacilli in one hour, staphylococcus areus in two hours, and pneumococcus bacteria within three hours! According the the Essential Oils Desk Reference, even a 0.2 solution of lemon oil can kill diphtheria bacteria in 20 minutes as well as inactivate tuberculosis bacteria. Lemon oil has of course been used in skin care to reduce wrinkles and combat acne. It’s medical properties include, antitumoral, antiseptic, improving microcirculation, increasing white blood cell count, improving memory, relaxation, and it is high in liminone which has been in over 50 studies for it’s ability to combat tumor growth. Uses include circulatory problems, arteriosclerosis, obesity, parasites, urinary tract infections, varicose veins, anxiety, hypertension, digestive problems, acne, and it has  bee found to have antidepressant effects.

Thieves
Ahhh, the Thieves blend! Like peppermint, I enjoy putting a drop of this blend in a big glass jug of water and sipping from it all day too!  Consisting of Clove, Lemon, Cinnamon Bark, Eucalyptus, and Rosemary, this blend is superb! Not only does it smell heavenly, but it has erased some of my worst sore throats instantly! Thieves has been clinically studied and found to be highly antiviral, antiseptic, antibacterial, and anti-infectious. Why does it have such a strange name? During the 15th century, a band of thieves was going around pillaging the dead and dying’s homes. Mysteriously, they never caught the plague. When apprehended, they were offered a more lenient punishment for disclosing the formula of herbs, spices, and oils they  had been using to protect themselves. In 1997 Weber State University found that by diffusing the Thieves blend airborne microorganisms were killed. By diffusing for 12 minutes there was a 90% reduction of Micrococcus luteus, and after 20 minutes the kill rate jumped to 99.3 %. There was a 99.96% kill rate of Pseudomonas aeruginosa after just 12 minutes. Young Living not only provides Thieves as an essential oil, but they have a whole line of thieves products from household cleaners to lozenges, sprays, and hand sanitizers. See PDF of Thieves products Here. I love diffusing this blend during the super bug/fall/winter seasons (it even smells Christmasy!) and I never leave home without a bottle of water with a drop in it and some of the lozenges for my children.

Frankincense
Also known as “Oil from Lebanon”, frankincense is one of my favorite oils. Perhaps this is because I know it is one of the gifts that was brought to the baby Jesus by the 3 wise men in Matthew 2;11, but it also smells wonderful to me! It is known as a “Holy Oil” in the middle east and has been used as a anointing oil for  thousands of years. Ebers Papyrus, one of the oldest known medical records dating from the sixteenth century BC makes mention of frankincense. It’s medical properties are listed as anti-tumoral, immuno-stimulant, antidepressant, and muscle relaxing. Its uses include depression, cancer, respiratory infections, inflammation, and immune stimulating. It contains sesquiterpenes, which have been found to stimulate the limbic system of the brain (the center for memory and emotions) as well as the hypothalamus, pineal and pituitary glands.  It’s fragrant influences are listed to increase spiritual awareness, promote meditation, and improve attitude and uplift spirits. As a mother, I like to wear a drop of this oil on my terracotta pendant necklace daily (available HERE). I truly notice a difference, and I believe the fragrant influences definitely influence me for the positive! Using one drop a day, one 15 ml bottle will get you through over 2/3 of the year (there are approximately 250 drops of oil per 15 ml bottle).

Valor
This is another one of my favorites. I like putting this on when I know I am going into a difficult situation! Plus I love the scent. Valor is a balancing blend consisting of Rosewood, Blue Tansy, Frankincense, and Spruce. This oil is listed to balance energies, and instill courage, confidence, and self-esteem. It is also listed to balance and align the body. It is said that by applying this oil before any other oil, that it will enhance the abilities of the oil to follow.

PanAway
The best way I know to describe this blend is to say that it used to be called Pain Away until the FDA stepped in! It is listed to reduce pain and inflammation, increase circulation, and speed healing, relieve swelling and discomfort from arthritis, sprains, muscle spasms, and cramps, bumps, and bruises. I LOVE this blend!

Peace and Calming
The name says it all! I often take on too much, and then become exasperated and anxious when I don’t get it all done. My aunt recommended this to me one day as it is what she said works for her when she gets anxious. I tried it and it truly lived up to it’s name for me! In the E.O.D.R. (Essential Oils Desk Reference), it is listed to promote relaxation and deep sense of peace and emotional well-being, relieving tension and uplifting spirits. It can be rubbed on the feet to assist in a peaceful night’s rest and may calm overactive children, reduce depression, stress and insomnia.

Purification
According to the E.O.D.R. Purification diffused cleanses and deodorizes the air and neutralizes mildew, cigarette smoke, and foul odors. I have found this true as I often use it in my cloth diaper pails and it completely eradicates even the worst of stenches! This oil is also listed to disinfect cuts, scrapes, and bites from spiders, bees, hornets and wasps. I have also used it on tick bites, and to repel mosquitoes and other nuisance bugs. It contains citronella, lemongrass, lavandin, rosemary, melaleuca, and myrtle.start-living-everyday-oils

When signing up for wholesale, this Everyday Oil kit was the package I chose. We use at least one of these oils every day. I often have Thieves, Lemon, or Purification in my cold air diffuser. When colds/flu’s are going around is an especially good time to have them diffusing. When we feel something coming on we take a drop of Thieves (it can be diluted in a teaspoon of honey, put on a piece of bread or on a cracker). If fevers gets too bad peppermint takes them down (it can be rubbed on the feet). There are so many wonderful uses and ways to employ these quality, therapeutic grade oils in your everyday lifestyle! (Note; it is not ever suggested to take an essential oil internally that is not therapeutic grade).
