Essential oils for healthful purposes is not a new breakthrough, it is in fact an ancient practice. In ancient times, essential oils were more sought after and desired then gold. They are spoken of in the Bible numerous times, and interestingly enough tombs of Egyptian Pharaohs were raided for them; precious gold items were found left behind and essential oils were taken. The essential oils used then were not like most the oils on the market today which are synthetic and/or cut (adulterated), the oils used then were better, they were pure and strong/potent. Today’s equivalent can be found in therapeutic grade quality oils produced by Young Living Essential Oils. In Best Essential Oils Part I we covered the importance of proper cultivation in true therapeutic grade essential oils. In this article we will talk about the importance of proper processing, or distillation, of essential oils.

There are many factors that are imperative in producing therapeutic grade essential oils. This is because the aromatic or volatile oils are very delicate. Drawing them from the plant too quickly can disrupt the delicate chemical structure, and compromise the healing properties. High temperature can completely kill the oil altogether! It may smell alright, but it is purposeless. If  the plant is not free of herbicides and other agrichemicals a reaction with the chemical compounds of the oil and the agrichemicals can occur during processing, creating a toxic substance.

Yet another area highly important in the processing of essential oils is that of the equipment used. Did you know aluminum and copper are used by some distillers and these can and do leach into the oil? Again, this can be very bad in two ways. For one aluminum is terrible for people, and has been linked to brain disease such as Alzheimer’s. Copper can actually make a person schizophrenic, among other things. Secondly, the metals can also react with the precious chemicals in the oil and again, create a toxic substance. So many things can jeopardize an essential oil’s quality and purity.

It is vitally important to stick with only the best when you are dealing with essential oils, especially if for healthful purposes.
