Essential Oils, Natural Flu Prevention, and “Green” Cleaning

This is the time of year when everyone is looking to ward off the fall colds and flu’s which are coming out and lurking around, and this year is especially daunting with the Swine flu. One of my favorite immune supplementation’s during the flu season is Young Livings therapeutic grade essential oil blend called Thieves. If you have not heard of Thieves essential oil blend before, I would like to introduce you to this clinically proven antimicrobial essential oil blend consisting of Cinnamon, Clove, Lemon, Eucalyptus, and Rosemary (1). In 1997 Weber State University out of Ogden, UT conducted a study of the Thieves blend and found it to have a phenomenal kill rate on airborne microorganisms. What was even more phenomenal was that they found that the longer Thieves was diffused, the microorganism kill rate went from 90% reduction to 99.3 percent! After being tested on Pseudomonas Aeruginosa it’s total kill rate was 99.96%! This means that bacteria and virus’s are not as able to mutate and become resistant to these oils.

What is exciting to me about this blend is that with it God gave us an alternative not only to drugs, but to the immune devastating and toxic bleaches and cleaners so prevalent on the market today. It is sad to me to see how so many mom’s clean their home to get rid of germs (scientifically known as microbes, i.e. virus’s, bacteria’s, fungi and the like which have capability of causing disease) and they use regular antibacterial cleaners or bleach. Although it is done in innocent ignorance with the best intentions, this is one of the worst things for adults and children, see Aromatherapy for Kids. As moms take every effort to keep bad bugs at bay, they are mystified as their children or themselves end up with a sore throat or cold after they get done scouring the house with antibacterial products and bleach. It is important to realize that in wiping out the bad bugs in our homes by using these products we have also wiped out the good bugs making up our immune systems (and therefore ours and our family’s natural protection) leaving us weak and susceptible to the first virus or bacteria that comes along. Did you know that household cleaners found in stores can even trigger allergic reactions?

Aside from the strong antimicrobial and disinfectant abilities of the oils in the Thieves product line, I am thrilled to know that I can use them in confidence knowing that in addition to disinfecting they are also safe. This means that as I clean with my environmentally friendly Thieves Household Cleaner, it is just fine when my children want to “help” mama clean or use the products too. It is said that if it one accidentally ingests the cleaner all one needs to do is drink water to get rid of the taste! Another way I love using Thieves this time of year is by diffusing it with my cold air essential oil diffuser. This is awesome for eliminating microbes in the air, and you’ll find that guests LOVE it as they walk into your home and are pleasantly greeted with the lovely cinnamon/clove aroma. I cannot count the number of people that come to my home and comment over how good my house smells as they walk in the door!
