I have found that Young Living’s essential oils work wonders in eliminating foul odors from diaper pails and cloth diapers. Just a couple drops in the bottom of diaper pails and the stink is gone! I use Bummies cloth diapers, and I found that after many months of use they began to collect a bad odor that would not go away even though I used bleach on them. I tried everything I could think of. Finally, instead of laundry liquid I tried Thieves Household Cleaner (made with Thieves Essential Oil Blend which has been clinically tested to be 99.9% antimicrobial) – now available in a 64oz. size! Voila! The stink was gone and the diapers smelled soooo good! A few drops of Thieves or Purification essential oil blends added to the rinse cycle also freshens the diapers (as well as any load of laundry).
For further refreshing, two to five drops of my favorite essential oil placed on the diapers just before putting them in the dryer works for further refreshing!
Some good choices are: Citrus Fresh, Lavender, Thieves, Purification essential oils.
I know bleach doesn’t completely wash out of the cloth diapers and therefore cannot be good for my baby, on top of which the fumes are very bad to breathe, but I know I can feel good about using the Young Living essential oils since they not only kill bacteria but have healthful aromatherapeutic bonuses as well!

I wish I had switched to cloth when I became (in midstream!) crunchy granola, as they say. I was your average consumer citizen during my pregnancy – the only things I had right were thinking that I was definitely going to breastfeed and use cloth diapers but though a series of circumstances (which I now know was God leading me!) I became aware of several amazing eye opening truths and now am a proactive, non vaccinating, un-schooling, weston a price, attachment parenting Mom. At tje top of those circumstances was that my child was born at 6.5 months and after 3 months in the nicu finally came home with a heart monitor and supplemental oxygen. So, in dealing with her many apneas and bradycardias during feedings and at other times, at that time, cloth diapers were the furthest thing from my mind.
Next baby, Lord Willing, will be wearing cloth diapers from the start, be carried in a sling, share the family bed, maybe even born at home!!
